I've been wondering how Cannith heirs are treated across the continent. While Phiarlan and Thuranni has a proper split, Cannith is more or less three different factions of the same house, with seperate leaders.

If a Cannith heir from Sharn were to visit the eastern nations, would he be welcome in Cannith holdings there? Or dismissed as an illoyal subject for serving the wrong house baron?

I think a certain amount of propriety would be displayed, but there might be some distrust between among the various groups. Some of the adventure modules play on this aspect quite a bit.

It's certainly not like the rivalry between Phiarlan and Thuranni, but the tensions are there.

Mar 05, 2009 7:10:12 It's mainly the issue that the viceroy council is evenly split between the three heirs apparent, meaning that they can't unite and vote to select a single new candidate as Dragonmark Baron.

But to answer your question Sarig, at the bottom level the Cannith heirs would treat each other with the respect they deserve. Cannith has no intention of walking the path that Thuranni/Phiarlan have. As it is unless Shirin did something especially stupid the three factions will eventually recombine. Hence why the Lord of Dust is working fervantly in the shadows of Jorlanna to fracture the house permanently.

You might face a little tension when member of Cannith East start rubbing shoulders with those of Cannith South, since East has nominal connections with Karrnath and some of that Karrnathi "undead are just tools" perception has found it's way into their mindset. But for the most part they will get along. It's only once you get to Viceroy levels that the divisions become more immediatley apparent. To the regulars operating the day-to-day guild businesses, they see no need for division and probably think that the whole factional warfare stuff is just silly.

Mar 05, 2009 16:22:12 One important thing to remember is that the Cannith tension is a relatively recent thing, resulting from the loss of the house leadership in the Day of Mourning. Beyond that, many heirs of the house have served or trained in different parts of Khorvaire. You might be born and raised in Sharn, but you still may have studied alchemy in Aundair, because it's always been the center of Cannith's alchemical operations.

You will certainly have people within the families who strongly support their own candidates for house leader and who might get into a heated debate about it at the tavern. There are some - especially as you move higher up in the hierarchy - who may place factional loyalty above other issues. But by and large, a Cannith heir will be treated the same way wherever she goes - unless she has a strong established reputation for being allied to one of the three leaders and promoting that leader's agenda, at which point she will draw some hostility from the supporters of the others. But she still wouldn't be refused admission to a house enclave or anything like that; again, it's tension within the house, but not a Phiarlan/Thuranni split.

Apr 01, 2009 9:57:40 The way I would handle it is something similar to political affiliations in the modern day. Some people have strong opinons and some really dont care. Like others mentioned the more clout you have in the organization the more likely for you have strong opinions about which side is better suited to lead.
