| #2AlasJul 22, 2008 12:38:57 | A perennial question! My typical reply: I put them along the shores of Crescent Bay, bopping back and forth between the Demon Wastes and the western edges of the Eldeen Reaches and Shadow Marches. I rather like the idea of tieflings as a fishing people-- maybe it's the mental image of someone with fire resistance spending all their time near the water. Also: Sharn; but then everybody has representation in Sharn. It's like NYC. |

The ancient empire selling their souls fits well with the Dhakaani if you want them to be augmented goblinoids instead of humans, who made the infernal pacts to help fight the Daelkyr. Or you could also say that they are similar to Kalashtar, being born by a different species of Quori possessing them, and then slowly migrating into Khorvair from Sarlona. |

Once the lowest of the low among the low of the demon empire, the Tieflings have always been around, a substantial but definite minority. Just like the other races, they're spread out among the whole continent with varying degrees of civility, but their greatest concentration is in the Wastes where tribes of heritics still hide and hunt, praying to their new God, the purifying flame, while the pure and faithful need no such protection among thier holy relics. Similarly, the Dragonborne mix with the humans on Argonesse, the Undying Court and Valenar are Eladrin, and the elves and half-elves of Khorivaire are Elves and Half-Elves still. |

Look at the racial breakdowns for the various cities, Teiflings would fall under "Other". As a planetouched, they are actually fairly easy to work into Eberron. Simply have them be the offspring of someone that gave birth in a Mabar manifest zone when it was coterminus. Yeah, they have evil tendencies, but they don't have to be. You don't need to worry with monolithic cultures like the dragonmarked races. They'd be much like the Changelings, simply adopting the culture of whatever area they were born into. If you want a single location where they are more prominent, pick any spot on the map and say "this is a Mabar manifest zone", and boom, thats where the majority of your Teiflings will be from. These guys are easy to explain, its the dragonborn that require the setting to bend over backwards and take it up the rear to explain. |
| #7ieattrollsforbreakfastJul 22, 2008 17:29:10 | I think there are a few sources of tieflings you can play with: one comes from the 4E tieflings history (infernal pacts), and another from the 3E origins (demonic offspring). Using more than one gives a variety/duality to the race that we see with some of the others, like elves. Here are my takes (heavily influenced by discussions we've had here before): Infernal Pacts: These tieflings originated in Sarlona, and are descended from the sorcerers of Ohr Khaluun. When the Inspired took power and Ohr Khaluun fell, the tieflings fled Sarlona, sailing east to arrive in western Khorvaire. These tieflings have a few cultural traditions of their own, but are now fairly integrated into human populations in the Shadow Marches and the west tip of the Eldeen Reaches. They are particularly common the the Demon Wastes, where they enjoy higher status than regular humans. Manifest Zones: Where zones tied to the evil planes (Risia, Fernia, Xoriat, evil controlled sections of Shavarath) spring up around or near communities, a tiefling might be born to two human parents. These tieflings can be found all over Khorvaire and beyond, and typically share their parent's culture in its entirety. |
