I've been suffering from a lack of creativity with warforged names. Of course, there are the over used weapon names (Cutlass, Scimitar, Morningstar, etc...) but I would love to hear your ideas (funny or serious) for different names of warforged. I've seen some in various threads, but I'd like to consolidate a list. If you have other names (non-warforged) but that you really think are top quality, feel free to post those as well.

As for me, my favorite warforged was Flail. He wielded twin light flails and was searching for his purpose in life when his existence was cut short by a Hydra lurking in a swamp area outside an ancient giant ruin in Xen'drik.

I look forward to hearing your ideas.

These are some of the names I used so far:

Arrow
Bowyer
Doorjamb
Fletcher

They fit into the weapon/job style of nameing.

But let me add in a few others:

Cog
Gear
Shard
Crystal
Blaster
Channel
Scribe
Scout

Those are more and they still fit into the job/object area but its more I think I usec Channel for a warforged PC once.

My general rule is this. Think of as many names that can discribe the warforged in that class, while trying to keep it one word. Then think of other classes that also work for that name.

But here a few more names:

Psy
Pen
Clank
Doorstop
Singer
Blade
Watch
Strike

Lessee, as a recovering 'forged addict I've got plenty of names stored up (whether or not the character ever got created or not is beside the point.) I usually tried to keep them in line with the class or backstory of the character and it's not failed me yet.

Relic (a treasure hunter)
Deserter (a soldier who abandoned a unit)
Sigil (a Spellcarved Soldier)
Quill (a wizard)
Wall (a meatshield)
Brick (an artificer)
Ram (a fighter)
Oak (a druid with the Ironwood Body feat)
Ward (a paladin)
Sheild (a bodyguard)
Bastion (an enginerring specialist)
Nurse (a midwife)
Spade (a farmer)

Hope these help!

Just do a google search for:

Parts of a sword
Parts of a crossbow
Parts of a bow
Medieval weapons

You'll come up with countless names that are all fitting for a warforged.

I've used Locke, Cross, Claw, Forte, Sabre, Maul, among others.

Don't forget that a WF name doesn't HAVE to be descriptive. A forged trying to fit in society better might take a typical human/elf/dwarf name too.

So far in my game only those who follow the LoB name themselfs after weapons or armor. The rest have eather have three letter names followed by a number representing the series or 'run' in which they were made and a two letter abreveration of the country they fought for. One of the reaccuring badguys in my game, for example, is DET 31 CY. (Cyre) who only goes by Det now or they take a 'normal' name or are named by their creators if they meet with them later.

After reading Faiths of Eberron, I happened to be playing a ten-day trial of Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach with my fiancee.

I ended up playing a warforged paladin of the Silver Flame named, obviously enough, Sanctified.

Hammer

Mine:

Adam (After his ...antine Body)

Another player's, at my suggestion:

Dirk (Works as both a reasonable real name, *and* a weapon-based name! Extra-fun if the weapon he wields is, in fact, a Greatsword)

And finally, two that I have to suggest whenever this topic comes up.

Let's just say that you're playing a bad-ass private inquisitive who's *just a machine* to all the chicks:

(S)Haft! (either one works)

The game I play in has a warforged named Sharaat, which is goblin for "blade". A warforged acquired at some point during the last war by a member of the clan, he's been passed around as property within the clan ever since.

I imagine that most Warforged veterans would use monosyllabic names for easier communication on the battlefield. They might also use ranks for names.

Corp (corporal)
Lance (lance corporal)
Sarge (seargent)
Mast (master seargent)
Wand (gunnery seargent in a world where wands are guns)
Lieutenant (or one of the following abbreviations)
Lieu
Tenant
Ten't
Cap'n (captain)
Major (Ghost in the Shell!)
Batu (Ghost in the Shell!)

Lock (Rogue or Warlock)
Spell (Wizard or Sorcerer)
Jammer
Jack
Hammer
Sledge
Slam (Monk)
Security
Dusk
Blade
Midnight
Cloud
red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet, black, white
Mr. Grey
Gandalf!
Leet (1337)
Skin (take that trophy collector feat from PHBII and make skins for yourself)
Face (guess what trophies your taking this time...)
Spike
Lee
Lillian (female)
Lilly (female)
Liulani (female)
Petunia (female)
Daisy (female)
Goldy (female)
Dolomite (after my firend's dwarven fighter who was eaten by 3 wymlings)

not:
Dross (meaning worthless)
Slag (again meaning worthless)

I'm a big fan of just picking whatever name you think fits the character. In our Eberron campaign, we modeled our characters after our favourite characters from the Firefly series, with my buddy playing the Malcolm-style captain, my wife playing the scary-effective psionic ala River, and me playing a Jayne-like thug.

So, I chose a Warforged barbarian and named him Big Sal (Sally to his shipmates). :D

Heh, I want to make a WF Artificer that creates a bunch of unslotted wand sheaths for himself, and takes a feat or something to be able to activate them all at the same time.

Just imagine a WF that has little panels pop open all over his body as he yells and each slot fires out five magic missles.

His name? Well duh, it would have to be Macross!

But let me add in a few others:

Cog
Gear
Shard
Crystal
Blaster
Channel

Scout

ironically, Gear is the name of the WF Artificer i just created for an upcoming campaign...

there's some good suggestions here that run along the lines of matching a job to your name or something similar. but remember, a WF can really pick any human/elf/dwarf/whatever name...i almost named him Alexander.

Generally, warforged names should be weapons or parts thereof (cutlass, pommel), objects (Shrine, the WF Paladin of the SF one of my players has; Codex is good, and I've actually suggested Clarion to people before :D), professions (Prophet, as mentioned above, is good), or substances (I have a WF Cleric named Shale, for example.)

My favorite WF name would have to be Corundum, though. He was a Psiforged who had blue crystal all over his body. Sapphires are a type of Corundum, and My psiforged was very talkative and a know-it-all, so the big word fit him.

In none of my games, however, will I ever allow random (or even non-random) combinations of Letters and numbers. That just encourages people treating them like robots, something I've been hard-pressed to get through some of my players thick skulls already.

Shrapnel.
My 'forged soulknife.
The story/joke is that he's been smashed to bits and repaired so many times that there isn't much of the original left. And, being repaired on the battlefield, what would have been used to patch him up? Why, shrapnel, of course!

I also like Flotsam and Jetsam. They are close enough to the common names, weapons or what have you, but also show a bit of the warforged's trouble with society. Being a castoff, left alone, not accepted. You get the drift. Hehe, drift.

I'm currently playing a Warforged Artificer (may be going into Spellcarved Soldier or Effigy Master later) called Sigil, mostly after the fact that his ghulra looks like a stylized "S".

Other good ones I've seen inclue:

Scout and Outrider, a pair of WF Rangers;
Scramasax, a servant of the lord of blades;
Mason, an architect and artificer;
Chase, an Archivist;
Scorn, a Paladin of the Silver Flame;
Keeper, The Black Dragon's butler/mechanic/assistant (thanks Edy);
Mattock, Edy's shovel-wielding miner/fighter;
Baron, a fighter -the name was originally ironic, but it stuck;
Anchor, a Knight -ironically not a sailor;
Bastard, from the Mark of Death novels -he lived up to the name very well;
Caracal, a druid with a penchant for felines
Cormorant, a skymage

Call me an iconclast, but "Phil" kind of grabs me.

In my experience, anybody who doesn't have a name and joins an adventuring party will soon get one, and rarely is it exotic or cool. Usually, it's something mudane, like "Bob".

In fact, "Bob" was our DMs default for when we had taken too much interest in a background NPC: the character isn't fleshed out, and never got a name, so when someone asks his name he says, "Bob". Subtle clue to move along.

Which explains (the now epicly famous) "Bob the Elf".

Mike would also be a good name for a Warforged.

I've created a Warforged wizard who's name is Friend. His backstory is that after the war he was taken in by a lonely wizard who taught him magic. The wizard always referred to him as Friend, so the warforged adopted that as his name.

Warforged name don't have to be in Common... Take all suggestions of this thread and translate them in Dwarf or Elf.

Since most name are given to them, if an elf name it, it surely be with an elf words. A wizard tend to learn draconic, cleric often learn celestial, if the WF had a patron/friend or he is one of this class, it could easily explain non-Common name.

In my game there is a Warforged Monk who save a dwarf merchant, without name, the dwarf choose to call him Alarn (Forged Fist)...

Here some idea:
Kundarak Bank Guard : Farar (Guard of the Stronghold)
Phiarlan Circus guard : Veron (Peace Keeper)
Cannith wizard's aid: Sjir (Scroll)

My Gnome artificer had another PC's WF as his 'bodygaurd'...IE they were the only suvivors from a blasted forgehold, and the WF believed he had to follow my characcter's orders.
It made for great dynamic as the characters grew....but I digress.
For awhile, my Arti just called him Warforged since he didnt have a name, and my gnome didnt think that WF needed/deserved one.
Then the WF saved him from being smushed by a falling stone pillar by rolling a natural 20 to hold it up for a couple rounds until it was safe.
This act earned him the name Brace.
The name suited him too, since he was more or less the backbone of our group, and was selfless and fearless, if simple.
Brace eventually became a paladin of Dol Arrah and reformed my naughty gnome from NE to NG. Go figure...

Somewhere, tending a field in Khoravaire there is a warforged named Bill Door. After being discharged when the war ended a lone warforged wandered through the five nations, looking for a place to work. Eventually he came to a farm and when asked his name he made one up on the spot, noticing an invoice and a door. Now he tends to fields, throughly digging the farmers life.

Of course if you decide to name a warforged Bill Door, be prepared to be soundly beaten if other players have read Reaper Man.

Prime of course works for a Warforged, I also like Silverbolt.

One I've created and trying to eventually play is a Warforged fighter, take the first two levels of the fighter substitution

Feats
first level Adamantine Body
second level The Biting Jaws feat
third level Guerilla Scout
4th level EWP Jovar.

Warforged with a dog like head. Named Sentinel.

Well I got beat to Brother.

He was one of my first Eberron characters - a WF monk follower of the Silver Flame who was also a pacifist. Resentful of being created as a weapon, he refused to deal lethal damage and always attempted to subdue. He got his mithril plated butt kicked. A lot.

Quite independently my DM came up with Father who was an early model Warforged and a bit slow. When we came upon a door that had been magically sealed behind us Father spouted one of the best D&D lines I've ever heard, "But why will the door not open? That is it's function." Right up there with "Whoa, monkey! Thank you, monkey!" but I digress.

Other fun Warforged names I have encountered/included in my campaign.

-Ballast and Filch - a pair of WF rogues
-Warden - a WF bodyguard
-Gladius - WF urban ranger specializing in two weapon fighting with a pair of short swords
-Fetch - a warforged employed as a butler in Sharn

A name I think is good is:

The Dreamer.

But The Dreamer or Dreamer would work best only for a warforged who's actually dreamt something. Thus, such a warforged will have to meet Shira from Secrets of Xen'drik.

Then, whatever his name was before, he may eventually become known throughout Khorvaire as The Dreamer.

For some reason it's really appealing to me.

Prime of course works for a Warforged, I also like Silverbolt.

I use warforged in a non-Eberron campiagn. We had five warforged.

Prime, the Warforged Paladin
Onyx, the Warforged Paladin of Freedom
Adon, the Warforged Totemist
Halcion, the Warforged Soulknife
Silversheen, the Warforged Artificer

Silversheen and Prime eventually became deities. Not the players, but the characters I used to fill out a pantheon.

If you are a drow themed warforged, Blackarachnia or Tarantulus.

Or maybe Unicron if you're a big warforged.

I'm currently playing a wf shaper psion named Wake, which I believe was taken from elsewhere in the boards. I avoided the psionic body feat, not just because it is underpowered, but because Wake's journey from lowly servant in the cogs to his current status is his own, not due to house Cannith. House Cannith may have 'made' him, but his kalashtar friends truly 'created' him, by opening his mind to the possibility of psionics.

So, yeah. Story short, Wake. Cool name, none better.

A couple of warforged in my campaign (both player and npc):

Five, a Fighter(short for 5486134)
Salamangkero, an Artificer (He tried to come up with a normal human name for his ID papers, but really screwed up at it)
Boneblade, a Paladin(He has quite a lot of bone parts used in him that makes him look quite disturbing but ironically became a Paladin)

Some names I want to use for warforged some day:

Lost (for one with Tracking feats)
Compass (for one that get's lost all the time)
Windows(for one who is open to anything and willing to change)
Linux (for one who doesnt listen to anyone and just wants to make a lot of money)
Oracle (for one of the most short sighted, live in the moment, type of character you'd ever meet)
and so on..

As you can notice, I like actually taking names for warforged that are the opposite to their personality.

Well, as long as I am posting, I may as well contribute the Warforged names / characters created by myself & my friends:

Cirrus - Male Personality Warforged Wizard / Sharn Skymage NPC I created. Has an air elemental bound to his composite plating that gives him the Whirlwind property.

He is my Eberron Elminster (iconic mage). I figured that a Warforged would be a good a candidate as any & I had fun tinkering with him.

Cirrus is facinated by wind and lightning magic to the point of eccentricity.

He often has "conversations" with his docent and the air elemental bound to his plating & his most prized possession is his soarsled, although he prefers to fly under his own power by either spell or the Whirwind property of his plating.

Cirrus is a member in good standing of The Blackened Book (see SCoT for details).

Grail - Male Personality Warforged Paladin (Silver Fire) from a previous campaign I DMed.

Chalice - Female Personality Warforged Artificer created by the wife of a friend of mine.

Scalpel - The name I gave to the unnamed WF Rogue in the ECS module, The Forgotten Forge.

Cognizant - Female Personality Psi-forged Telepath. Recurring Villain / Anti-Hero I made for a friend's campaign.

One Hundred Fists - Male Personality WF Monk I created for a campaign but never used.

Sunder - Male Personality WF Fighter / Juggernaut NPC I created to be Merrix d'Cannith's bodyguard & alleged agent of the LoB.

Wrath - Female Personality WF Barbarian NPC I never used. Currently used as a PC in another friend's campaign.

Scirocco - Male Personality WF Swordsage (Book of Nine Swords) that (naturally) focused on the Desert Wind disciplines. I built Scirocco more as an exercise to see if I had a grasp on Bo9S rules. I never intended to use him for anything.

Halo - Female Personality WF Cleric (Sovereign Host) created for the same campaign that Grail (see above) is in. Grail and Halo constantly argue about religion, which shouldn't be surprising.

Ironfang - My "lets see if Jaws of Death is worth the slot" Male Personality WF Barbarian. Built to playtest the JoD feat.

Steelrender - Another Male Personality WF Fighter / Juggernaut NPC I assigned to bodyguard Merrix d'Cannith.

Golden Arms - Male Personality WF Monk / Artificer who's name I shamlessly stole from the Chang Cheh / Shaw Brothers old school kung fu movie, Kid With The Golden Arm, which is one of my favorite films.

EDIT:

I forgot the WF in the game I'm currently DMing in Michigan:

Fulcrum - loveable but eccentric Male Personality WF Artificer & a bit too curious for his own good. Constant victim of the "I wonder what this button does?" line of logic.

The friend who created Fulcrum really likes my NPC, Cirrus, so part of his storyline is that Fulcrum & Cirrus were made at the same creation forge, which makes them "related."

Our group has a warforged that calls himself "Meatshield" and is constantly saying bloody stupid things like "I shield the meat", "Where is my meat" and when speaking to awakened wolf "this is my meat". So naturally my goblin PC started calling him Codpiece, he hasn't figured out why the whole rest of the group starts snickering every time I talk to or about him yet.

It's been suggested at least three times already, but we had an un-named Warforged PC in our airship-based campaign who was quickly dubbed "Anchor" by the other players. (I was calling him "Bucket," to go along with the NPC WF swabbie named, uh, "Swab.")

I've got two WF NPCs for use in my current campaign, as well. One is a Cleric of the Sovereign Host named Preacher, and the other is a WF Fighter/Monk of the Silver Flame named Pure.

I don't remember all the details, but I once created a WF NPC (actually a series of them) for an Epic-level campaign named "Flyboy", which were Artificer/Rogues with magical flight capabilities and Dual Wand feats, carrying - IIRC - wands of maximized acid orb and maximized sonic orb. That was fun!

I've also encountered a WF PC named Trull, derived from his Last War-era military designation, TR-11.

Other suggestions:
Demon (optimized combat monkey)
Imp (Demon's WF Scout buddy)
Thick (hard to break, or a dullard, your choice)
Steady
Porter (carries things)
Carver (woodcarving skills, or how it makes swathes in enemy lines)
Spring (Spring Attack, or maybe ranks in Tumble?)
Lump
Scrap
Slag (I like these last few names for a Warforged who feels like he has no place in society.)

Nomad - rangers or scouts
Shepherd
Messiah - Warforged Cleric or Favored Soul

I also like Flotsam and Jetsam. They are close enough to the common names, weapons or what have you, but also show a bit of the warforged's trouble with society. Being a castoff, left alone, not accepted. You get the drift.

Incidentally, there is a warforged character in the novel Thieves of Blood named Flotsam; he spends a good deal of time underwater.

And Flotstam is also the name of the cat from Ed Bolme's Orb of Xoriat.

My group has taken to using adjectives to name Warforged instead of nouns like object names and such. We've had 'forged named Strong, Holy, Tall and Gray.

Additional non-adjective names include my warforged Truenamer Verbatim and a friend's hunk-of-junk brawler with a bad attitude, Scrap. (The latter was intended not in the same sense as "junk" or "scrap metal," but in relation to the term meaning "to fight.")

While DMing, I had a minor villain, a Warforged Scout follower of the LoB called Garrotte, along with a female-personalithy Warmage called Pitch.

And in my current campaign, there's an NPC 'forged who joined a family of Cyran homestead farmers, and renamed himself Plow.

Just thought I'd throw those out there.

I don't think these have been used or mentioned before...

The last time I played a Warforged was an adamantine-skinned, bastard sword and tower shield wielder, heedlessly plowing into the enemy. His name? Tank.

Now, for a couple others...

For a Paladin, Knight, or Crusader, 'Guardian'.

For an artificer/'warforged medic', 'Rivet'.

For a Wizard, Warlock, or perhaps other arcanist, 'Grimoire'.

Let us not forget about a skinny, sociopathic, rust-hued fighter/rogue/assassin (perhaps employed by the Lord of Blades to venture into distant places and remove a troublesome meatbag or two)... simply known as 'Four-Seven'. :D

I've played one warforged, name of Packer. An obsessive neat freak, was actually trained as a warmage. There was an `incident' when he was responsible for sending the bodies of the fallen back from the frontlines, and he sorted the corpses by limb, torso, head and so forth so as not to waste valuable space.

I also had an idea for a warforged based on Clint Eastwood's character in "Unforgiven". All the other soldiers went back home to be farmers, so he gave it a go too. It has not gone according to plan.

Call the feat:

when Eberron just came out my whole party played an ALL WARFORGED party...

must I say that I am the DM and they are from 9 to 12 players...

their names were

Forge: He who rule them all (died as a Artificer 12)
Keys: he who steal them all (rouge 7/scout 4)
Hide: He who guide them all (Ranger 10/figther 1)
Barb: He who kill them all (Barbarian 3/figther 5/Ranger 4 he has spiked adamntine body)
Silverspell: He who save them all (favored soul 12 (silverflame))
Blackhand: he who blast them all (Warlock 13)
Sudden: He who surprise them all (Ninja 6/rougue 5)
Relic: He who heal them all (Cleric 11)
Scroll: he who cast it all (Sorcerer 10)
Case: he who cast better than Scroll (Wizard 11)
Katana: He Who protects the honor (Samurai 10)
Strings: He who learn from them all (Artificer 1/Rouge1/ranger 1/barbarian 1/bard 5/warlock 1/sorcerer 1/ninja 1)

it was a funny campaign... until they all died in the hands of the lord of blades A.k.a He who killed them all

In a 'power' campaign that's just started up, I'm playing a 14th level Swordsage/Monk Gestalt.

He escaped his initial battlefield assignment, and became a underworld thug in Sharn. There, he was tricked by a old human swordsage into chasing said old man clear across Sharn to the House Deneith wardhouse (whereupon he was quickly incarcerated). He was 'rescued' by the old sage a month later, in exchange for becoming the old man's apprentice in the Sublime Paths.

As the training to change from being a 'might makes right' brute force bruiser, into a thoughful, but deadly martial artist (perhaps the first Warforged follower of the Sublime Paths) was so difficult, he chose the name
Harsh Path.

The Warforged NPC in my campaign in known on the streets of Sharn as Brother Forge. He's a self-determined cleric (Fighter 1/Cleric 2) who heals for free and does what he can to help. I named him Brother Forge simply because I liked the sound of it, the way it rolls; that the word Forge goes well with Brother.

I have another NPC named Origin, also called Master Origin by many folks in Sharn, who's a 6th-lvl Artificer. He recently created a new mechanical/magic right arm for a PC who had his bitten off by an Abyssal Maw. He's not cheap, but he does damn good work

That said, while I think you can name your Warforged anything you wish, I prefer the idea of not naming them after weapons or objects. Break the stereotype, be different. Give them normal names like other characters, such as Merrix or Thora or Cathil or even Fred; whatever works and suits the personality

Let's see, some warforged who have been in some of my campaigns...

Scabbard - Warforged charger who had a bag of holding-type compartment in his chest.

The Daggers - Four warforged scouts who popped out of Scabbard's chest. Surprised the hell out of the PCs.

Dolemite - Spiked chain fighter PC. Named as a blatant Futurama reference. "I don't give out when there's heat all about!"

'Leum - Short for "Mausoleum". Another PC who was left inert in Cyre during the Mourning and was awakened by a chance breaking of a repair light damage oil.

Seven Ironsoul - Formerly "7 of 10". My fiance's reforged cleric.

Fort - Formerly "4 of 10". Town tinker and plot hook.

Butcher - Formerly "10 of 10". Bad seed of the bunch and BBEG.

Coldforge - Half-far spawn fighter warlock and spawn of the Mournland.

Xaern - NPC Wizard

Cobalt - NPC Expert/Artificer

Sapphire - Female personality NPC reforged artificer

Zhang - NPC Fighter/Reaping Mauler. Based of Zangief.

Squalor - NPC Barbarian

Hook - NPC whip-dagger fighter

Furnace - NPC Warmage

and

HK-88427 - PC non-Eberron setting warforged Fighter/Disciple of Dispater. He was created by rogue githyanki and had his compostie plating enchanted into demon armor. Not a nice guy, but we had fun running him.

In most cases, myself and my players have treated WF names as either something they choose for themselves (after being emancipated), or is bestowed upon them by someone else. For some, a name doesn't matter particularly. Alternately, even the basic number they were given (like "42" below) has taken enough meaning that they don't bother to change it.

I've had:

Soldier 42 ("Soldier" or "42") - PC Mithral-body Warforged Ranger/Barbarian/Fighter. We both figured that towards the end of the war, the Cannith didn't bother as much with names for the rank-and-file.

Soldier 57 (42's "brother" and squadmate), now rechristened "Saber" after joining the army of the LoB after being abandoned during a retreat during the War. We had an angsty reunion of the two atop a speeding Lightning Rail...

"Monocle" - former military intelligence WF who's since gone on to a postwar life with the Sharn police. He fancies himself a bit of a detective (though it's not technically his day job). He reads a lot of the Khorvaire-equivalent of Sherlock Holmes novels. He chose his name after he decided what to do with his life after mustering out...

"Hammer" and "Anvil" - pair of gold-filigreed Adamantine WF used as personal bodyguards by a wealthy and influential information broker residing in Sharn. The employer picked the names, they're happy to keep them. They don't talk much... Also referred two as "The Two Mountains." Big, burly bodyguard types, present for intimidation value as much as actual protection duties. I hadn't decided if the employer commissioned them from Cannith or not...

I've reserved the weapon names to be primarily for those WF associated with the Lord of Blades. Most importantly, they're given to a relatively select chosen within his ranks. The sort of concept is that when the LoB rechristens them, he's "re-forging" them into the weapons which he'll use to fight his war.

Warforged get a serial number upon creation, rather than a name, and that if they do have a name proper it is (a) a nickname used by their fleshy comrades OR (b) something they've chosen to get in touch with their "human" side. While this is not true for all games, it is an idea I've seen floating around in this thread, on the boards and in some of the books IIRC.

When one of my players was pondering what name to give him, he figured that the serial number should have some meaning, too, rather than being just a random string of digits.

So, we came up with a rough structure for a warforged serial number/designation. Here's the formula:
  • Prime number: This represents the 'forgeds place in the batch and is usually not higher than 100.
  • Special designation (optional): If the warforged has any special qualities that set him apart from the standard version, a letter is added after his batch number. M for Mithral Body, A for Adamantine Body, and so on.
  • FoO, or Forge of origin: A country code (e.g. CY for Cyre) and number which point to the Cannith Creation Forge that the construct was created in. This helps sort the constructs during transport and processing by Cannith and is almost never used after they are delivered to their buyers.
  • BN, or Batch number: This comes in YY-MM-DD format and identifies date of the creation run during which the warfoged was assembled. Similarly to FoO, this is primarily used during early training in House Cannith facilities and is replaced by a military designation once the construct begins regular military service.
  • Military designation: A string of numbers and/or letters precisely defining the bearers place in military structures. The exact naming scheme may vary from country to country, but a basic model is: Regiment-Battalion-Company-Platoon.

Example: A warforged named 23A CY1 92-01-20 was produced to serve in the Aundarian army. Upon finishing training he was delivered to his unit and renamed 23A 4-1-C-2.

What this means is:
  • It was the 23rd 'forged to emerge from the Creation Forge at House Cannith's headquarters in Cyre on Zarantyr 20, 992.
  • It was fitted with adamantine body plating.
  • It currently serves in the 4th Regiment, 1st Battalion, Company C, 2nd Platoon of the Aundarian Army.

This attaches the warforged PC to his brothers and sisters (created in the same run, in the same forge - they bear the same FoO and BN) as well as to his army comrades (same military designation).

Hope you find this useful.

In the first campaign we played in Ebberon, we had a wf paladin of the silver flame (admantine body) named Iron. I've got a npc in mind for a new game I am going to call Silver (mithril body sneaky type). Metal names seem to be very appropriate for warforged, some more appropriate than others. A funny note about Iron, we always joked that instead of a swim score, he had a "sink" score, and his move silently roll was actually a roll to move loudly, etc. Admantine Body is great for a front line fighter, less so for a front line fighter in a sneaky group, heh.

My first Eberron character is a Warforged with the cumbersome name of Pride of the Harrowcrown Front – he got this name after being the only survivor of a Breland warforged regiment that fought one of the last and most vicious of the battles between Thrane and Breland (across the Harrowcrown forests). Normally his name just gets dropped to Pride.

Two of the best warforged in the current campaign are Shield 23 and Shield 24, who think of themselves as brother and sister.

My only warforged character was a defective 'forged with strength 9, who spent most of the war following around a forgemaster recording everything he wanted, until he learned to memorise everything. he was called "Stylus", and was great fun as a bard

you know, fo rthe longest time, i ahd troubles with warforged names...I would come up with the classic titles like "flint' 'lock' 'gear' etc. but they would seem so hollow. Obviously you would name someone after their major traits (much like nicknaming people for great acheivements ie/killer, brick, tank, etc.)

Then I read the Eberron novels(all of them, jesus theyre addictive) and Pierce came up again and again. Specifically, i thought his name fit for several reasons:
-he uses primarially a bow and flail. piercing damage
-he is a stealthy tracker, piercing shadows, seeking information
-his personality has him asking direct simple questions without regard for anything like decorum, yet he doesnt seem crass, he seems only direct.

so really, when you name your warforged, the name will eventually change who youre playing as well. If you play a character named brick, hes probably going to be be a bit stubborn, as well as having a great Ac;)

My two warforged have been named Andros and Renatus - I figured that he had named himself after seeing the utility of names.

Andros means "human" in Greek (approximately), and Renatus means "reborn" in Latin (approximately). Seemed to fit with the character.

By the way, my favorite place for finding names is Behind the Name. Just assign certain languages to game languages (Gaelic = Elven, for example) and you have a treasure trove of names. For the warforged you might just take a name you like and use the meaning instead of the name itself.

I've got 2 warforged that I'm working on as characters...the first is the simpler of the two.

Axe - Male Personality Fighter 2/Bard 1 - A frontline fighter in the last war, Axe found a new calling one night in a tavern. Obviously he plays the guitar.

6 - 6 is a cleric of the Becoming God. He awoke in the Mournlands, his memory blank except for his name, a few fleeting memories of the last war, and the knowledge of healing magic. An Architecht named Cornerstone found him and instructed him in the ways of the Godforged. While leading a party in search of the First Forge, 6 was ambushed by followers of the Lord of Blades and eventually wandered out of the mournlands. (Where he meets some members of his current party)

6 is the 6th in a line of Warforged created near the end of the Last war. He's part of an experiment to see how the introduction of religion affects the Warforged mind. So far he's only encountered 2 of his siblings; 4, a cleric of the Dark 6 and 7 a Gatekeeper Druid.

my campaign currently has 2 warforged

Tend - lovable warforged scout who is a cleric. He lost his jaw but that wont stop him from helping his friends.

13 - player character, named after the rune on his head which is the number 13 in dwarven, not much is known yet about his origins, though the players are finding out that the reason he has no memories is because he hasnt made any yet. Since the day he was created his body was controlled by another mind. Now that mind has been removed and 13 is getting the chance to thrive on his own.

a few are coming up like
Smite, a warforged paladin, basic stuff really
Trinket, warforged artificer
Zoe Alaxis, ancient warforged, she was left deactivated in a Xen'drik ruin for around tenthousand years.

Hope it helps with generating new ideas

I named my warforged monk 'X'. He was designed by the Wayfinder Foundation to be the perfect explorer (don't need weapons, armor, food, sleep, etc.). He has the Kung Fu Genius feat so that his high Int. helps with his knowledge (history/etc.) skills, languages, crafting (armorsmithing), and cartography. X is a play on the whole "X marks the spot" and "Xendrik", where warforged originated. He is supposed to be devising a name for himself, but I'm still partial to X.

I'm working on a warforged artificer named Shim.

I played a (simultaneous) trio that had worked together in the Last War. They were the last survivors of Echo Platoon. So... named EP2, EP8 and EP12. EP2 was a paladin, EP8 an artificer and EP12 was a warforged scout scout. (As in the MM3 race, and the CAdv class.)

I also had a warforged psion named Loquent. He was eloquent.

I figure a good thing to do with warforged is too add place of origin or faith that they belong to as part of their name.

So I end up having:
Shield of the silver flame
Blade of breland
Revenge for Cyre
Glory for the Eldeen Reaches
Death to the humans

another idea is to rip off names of specific magic items :P

Also a player of mine likes to use names with codes in them to represent he was part of a batch that was sold to X country.
Such as SP-00 "Yojimbo"
SP-00 being his given name and "Yojimbo" the name he took for himself. Ala robocup.

My warforged warblade character, Guyr Adamantine, got a long story for his name.

At first, in his squad, he was called Gear. it was his task to tend for the various tools his team had to use. He was quite fascinated by metallic items, so the name stuck.

Then, after the war, he saw how mankind frowned upon free warforged. Gear wanted to be accepted, to be given orders. He wanted to interact with humans, even if it would be through spiteful insults. They looked down on those who were nameless slaves before, and he thought having a name related to an object only emphasised his own ''inhumanity''. So, he changed the grammar behind it, becoming ''Guyr'' to the official papers, without throwing away his past.

After, he traveled the world, driven by curiosity, and fell in ancient woods, older than civilisation itself. He fought beasts and men alike, both mad against his kind, but managed find more accepting being in these savage lands. Ironically, those were blessed by the moons, like the much feared were-creatures, and had just as poor reputations. These outcasts were scarred just like the warforged. Their past was bathed in blood, and were looked down by the more ''noble'' mens. Despite this, the shifters were proud of it, and made Guyr realise one thing. Humans hated him, because he lacked blood, because they built him. He wanted them to see him as a human, but he wasn't. He was forged for for war. Guyr realised that having a name made him a man, but he lacked what linked him to his brothers, a family name. So he chose Adamantine, as it was the ''blood'' that bound him to his teammates.

Guyr no longer seeks himself, but adventure to carve his name in the world, so that his first quest had a purpose.

Isn't that awesome?

Valk, Val, or Kyrie (short for Valkyrie) for a cleric, pal, or fighter WF with Mithral Body and Mithral Fluidity feat. Designed different to look somewhat feminine, and the head looks like a winged gothic full helm.

story behind the look (and name) is that the creator of Valk once saw a Vaklyrie descend onto a battlefield and was so awestruck by her beauty, he wanted to make a construct to honor her, and in the process ended up making a WF in the image of the Valkyrie (minus the wings of course)

I'm glad someone revived this thread.  I'm a big fan of warforged and I've had several, both PC and NPC.

3rd Edition:
Query:
Artificer, first warforged I ever played.  He was so named because he was so curious.  He woke up in the Mournland with no memory (I see a few others in this thread with a similar origin) and wondered who he was; his quest eventually led him to discover that he was Bulwark, King Boranel's personal warforged, and he had lost his memory in a duel with The Nameless One who eventually became the Lord of Blades.  Query wasn't just curious about his past, he was curious about a lot of things, especially religion and philosophy.  He wondered why people still called him a WARforged when the war was over.  I even played him as gender confused for a while (male personality but he wore dresses) but eventually dropped it.

Effigy: Psion (Shaper) who made lots of astral constructs.  Only played him for one session as a guest in another game.

Free: Chaotic good Crusader of Kord.  Non-Eberron game.  Free was built as a normal golem that somehow gained his own will.  Fled from his creator and made it his life's goal to free other constructs from slavery and tyranny, not realizing that they didn't have the same free will as he did.

4th Edition:
Bishop:
NPC in non-Eberron game.  Bishop was leader of a group of warforged living in the wasteland.  His followers had names like Rust, Void, Ratchet, and Clank.  Stole the name from the synthetic in Aliens; I even quoted the line "I prefer the term 'artificial person,' myself," when referring to warforged.

Vigil: Another NPC in the same game.  Before the Nerath Empire fell, Vigil was assigned to guard a certain dungeon that held a powerful eldritch machine.  When the Empire fell, he kept guarding the place diligently for the next 100 years until the PCs showed up and convinced him he didn't need to keep guarding the place.  I stole the name from the Prothean virtual intelligence on Ilos in Mass Effect.

I'm going to be starting a new game soon, and my character is a warforged Battlemind.  He's an experiment by House Cannith in creating artificial dragonmarks, and he bears the Mark of Storm.  He pretends to be a paladin instead of a battlemind, and he hides the dragonmark behind a holy symbol of the Sovereign Host.  Haven't settled on a name yet, but the top three contenders are Tempest, Flux, and Reverb.

Someone in the thread mentioned using G1 Transformer names for warforged.

I immediately thought that you could have a warforged druid with low Int whose beast form was a dinosaur:
"ME GRIMLOCK KING!"

But it's pronounced 'Arn-hahhhd'.

Three new Warforged PCs for my current Eberron game:

13 of 20, Warforged Two-Handed weapon fighter.  Also known as "BOB", or Big 'Ol Basher.

IPOD, or 1 of 10, or First Production Oratory Device.  Warforged Cunning Bard.

and finally,

Primoris.  A Warforged Artificer that believes he was the first Cannith produced Warforged, and who helped build the other two.  (Or so he claims).

My favorite name for a warforged is Mr. Crowbar. He was a character I made, an advanced model warforged.

I have played a wf in a Red Hand of Doom adaptation set during the war.  I  play him as the pre-cursor to the Lord of Blades.  He takes orders now and seethes within having conversations with an ancient docent (its a play by post), but one day he will crush the fleshed.

He is a Brelish recon unit working with a special forces team of knights.  He lays traps and during fights he explodes with his rage.

his name is,

IED

Personally, I'm partial to giving warforged names that are verbs.  I previously ran a wf cleric named Revere.  I'm gearing up to run an artificer named Stitch.

I once ran a warforged NPC named Premium, who was an obsessive art collector and bizarre decadent. I created another Warforged NPC named Malfunction, who lived below a blacksmith's shop and had a persistent tick that mimicked the constant hammering from the forge above. In the Eberron campaign I am currently running, there is a Warforged PC called Big Blu Hammer (The player is a Technical school gratuate).

Seige, the min-mazed fighter|barbarian crusher of hopes and dreams.  Seige's rages are actually reconfigurations of his structure, as his form changes to better crush those who oppose him.

Oak, the unusual Warforged Warden, whose wooden compeonents have begun to regrow.  A pacifist, Oak's weapon is an imbedded chain (a reflavored whip) which had once been a flail.  It broke during the great war, but was never fixed.  A vine now grows through the chain.

Rampart, the heavily armored walking ballista (Ranged Warlord).  A heavy shield plus a massive Superior Armbow makes him a living seige engine.
