I'm working on something, and I'm deadlocked. What damage type is most fitting for the Mournland?

The two I've narrowed it down to are Poison and Necrotic, but I'm having trouble deciding which is most archetypical of the mournland.

Thanks for any advice!

I would say that the typical type would be necrotic. Situationally it could be just about any type, but in general necrotic fits best in my mind.

The archetypal damage of the mournland is the kind that drives you mad and kills you.

Any particular reason? I'm not questioning your choice, just trying to see what exactly it comes across as. (What I'm working on is an embodiment of the Mourning in fairly low-level form, so I can only choose one damage type to focus on)

Hmm... There are a few combos that can do that, and psychic alone. Anything specific?

I'd go for untyped, or make up an own special type, to emphasize that the mournland is something that you can't easily protect yourself against. Necrotic and Psychic Resistance is just to easy to get your hands on, especially IF you plan on doing a mournland trip, there'd be no reason why an adventuring party would not get a suit of armors or items with resist properties for each of them.

Good example is my adventuring party, that organised Wavestrider boots for everyone when the heard that they'd be going into a swamp for the next few weeks.

If you want a simple damage type for the mists of the mournland, go with necrotic. Something for the villain with his mourning-mists blade/siege engine to use.

Though the Mournland itself should deal in all manner of horrors and unpleasant surprises.

Thanks guys!

Don't keep us in suspense, what did you come up with and how did it play out?

If you want existing damage types, I'd go with a combination of three damage types (psychic, necrotic, poison) OR, if you want to seriously freak out your players, throw in a touch of divine harm. Perhaps the Mourning is the result of a ritual that tried to control or create a deity gone horribly wrong.

Personally I'd go with untyped damage, but with the attacks themselves flavoured towards a damage type, just to give people the advantage they get from saving throws against damage types. Damage resistance in the Mourning, unless as the result of a major quest, is probably overkill.
