What are they going to call what shifters do now that Shifting means taking a five foot step?

I don't know what they will call it but I hope they do something awesome with it. I really really love shifters and there are a lot of cool things that could be done with them. I particularly wonder what is going to happen with their ability scores in the new system?

Just going to take a guess.
I don't think it will be it's own mechanic at all in 4E, but rather raciel per encounter abilities or feats each with there own name.

this is kind of a joke but the longer i thought about it i liked it more...

Beyond their ability to shift, while shifted they can make a shift as a Minor action... so they are shifty shifter when they are shifting....

joke for sure... but i don't know the concept of a Shifter being EXTRA moblie compared to normal people when in animal for seems cool... i may house rule the new shiftes to be able to do it as a power... wither at will or encounter is based on how my feel for 4E is at the time they are made (and by made i mean the full entry and not the MM verson)

You know, it would be kind of neat if shifters got a per encounter shift that lasted for a very short duration (lets say your con modifier in rounds?) and a per day ability that let them shift for a longer duration (like say for the rest of an encounter).

A /day shifting ability that lasted an encounter would be so awesome.
I really hope we get shifter information sooner rather than later. My shifter warlord really needs some crunch to go with the ever increasing background that my mind keeps producing.

They are trying to do away with durations that you have to track for a number of rounds. All spells we've seen have lasted either until your next turn, for the whole encounter, or until the opponent makes a save. I would guess that shifting will last for the entire encounter.

I'll just note that I have a player in one of my playtest groups playing a shifter. While I can't give specifics, I think the 4E translation works well.

Oh, I'm not claiming it's a revelation, since I'm providing no real information. I'm just saying that the MM provides enough information about shifters to have fun with them from day one.

I meant 'worded'. Sorry. When people who have more information about something than I do say positive things about it without telling what exactly those positive things are (i.e. "It's fun!"), I go insane with curiosity.

And I'm hoping you can say this about the 'forged and the changeling as well?
(I'm not even thinking about Kalashtar until 4.0 Psionics)

Warforged are talked about in "Wizards Presents: Races and Classes" and look like they've been thought about and are ready to go.

I heard somwhere that Changelings and Dopplegangers were being wrapped together in the MM, so that you can use the same stats but at different levels. Don't have a source handy, take it as you will.

As a matter of fact, since their presence as playable MM races was confirmed at DDXP, I can. And the changeling cleric in one of my groups played a critical role in the last session.

Given that doppelgangers are apparently just going to be advanced changelings, and since changelings and shifters were essentially developed as LA +0 versions of doppelgangers and lycanthropes in 3E, is it not probable that the same thing is happening here? Shifters are the actual race, and a lycanthrope is simply an advanced one?

How 'bout morphing?

While appropriate, it probably has a too 'high-tech' feel with the term being used with CGI graphics, plus it implies more complete shapeshifting ... Changelings morph, I'd say, but Shifters ... 'beast on'? I dunno.

(That, and do you really want a team of five shifters striking a pose and declaring, "It's morphin' time!"?) Mighty Morphin' Eldeen Rangers!

Not only is this hilarious and going in my Sig, but I thought I'd like to point out that I've added a Thread in the 4e Races forum where I talk about the possibility of Shifters (as well as Half-Orcs and potentially Changelings...?) gaining certain racial bonuses/forms when in the Bloodied condition.

Anyway, until next time Transform and Roll Out!

When bloodied you can use a racial encounter ability as a minor action to gain benefits based on shifter type until the end of the encounter or knocked unconscious, which ever comes first.

Longtooth - regeneration while bloodied and +2 damage
Razorclaw - +1 AC and Reflex and +2 speed

Bear in mind that you will eventually see racial feats and such that expand the flavor of the shifter.

I hope there is a feat that lets you use it sooner then Bloodied... maybe as a daily power...

Is even the name of the ability something you can't give?

It's still called shifting - specifically "Longtooth shifting", etc. This has led to a few "Who's on first" moments -
"I'll shift as a minor action."
"That's 3E. In 4E shifting is a move action."
"No, SHIFT."
"Ohhh...."
But generally the circumstances are such that that it's not an issue, and it's never caused confusion for more than a few seconds. and in text - say, for a feat - you'd say "When you use a racial shifting power" - and since shifters don't have any racial powers related to move-shifting, there you go.
