So I just reread the Warforged article and saw the docent. Is this and is it unique to Warforged or can anyone have one?

Docents are artifacts. Magical items from a the time of the giants, I believe. They're intelligent items, and, if I'm recalling correctly, can only communicate with Warforged. They fit into the chest of a Warforged and can give advice, knowledge, etc. Thats how they communicate, so non-warforged can't make use of their knowledge directly.

They're lesser artifacts, really. More like a Staff of Magi than the Hand of Vecna. in power. The "true" origins are steeped in mystery but my own personal theory is that they are the "brains" of the first living-constructs that were torn from their bodies by the dragons after they smashed the giant's civilization.

One Docent had in it the "brain" or "essence" of one of the quori that attacked the giants thousands of years ago. When it got plugged into a warforged it gave new information and "data" to the "forged". They began to "know" new things, and I think some of the Docent were meant to take over the warforge body since some of them were resting places for quori souls.

Interesting Where is all this info? I know a little is in the ECS, however the info on Quori, etc isn't.

Novels, the Xen'Drik book, back of Eberron book, Races of Eberron, Dragonshards etc...

While its true they are artifacts, I would hardly compare them to the Hand of Vecna or the Staff of the Magi. The majority of Docents don't have any powers beyond being a trove of ancient knowledge.

I think in this case artifact was meant more like an ancient item from an ancient civilization. For instance we find Egyptian artifacts in Egypt. Although at least one is an actual artifact.

A docent is any learned person who guides and explains. A docent is more like a professor than a teacher. I'm sure you can find several at Morgrave University.

They might have a few at Morgrave, but you can't really talk to them. Unless you're a 'forged.

If they were called "teachers" would you say that there are a teacher in Eberron is not somebody who teaches? Are you just saying a word can't have two related meanings?

We use English for Common in Eberron, so docent does indeed mean "a person who is a knowledgeable guide" in Eberron. In Eberron it is also used to refer to a kind of magic item. "Docent" may also be as obscure a word in Eberron as it is in real life, so that non-academics who know about the magic item don't know the original meaning of the word. That doesn't erase the original meaning of the word, and doesn't mean you won't have docents giving lectures at Morgrave.

The intelligent magic items are called docents because that's what they serve as. The first Khorvarian to discover their function probably dubbed them "docents" because the word already existed to describe a person (intelligent magic items are arguably people) who does what they do. The name stuck because it sounds distinctive and isn't commonly used otherwise.

Many things in real life were named in a similar way: calculators, cars, buttons (the kind you push), etc.. In some cases the original meaning of the word wasn't obscure, but became obscure as the new meaning became more widely used.

ok fair enough you are right, but i think that you might have confused the OP, and the book actuly says that the ones giving lectures at Mongrave are called professors not docents, wich by the way is a rather uncommon word

Yep, you're absolutely right. But I'm fairly sure he was asking about the devices.
