Xen'Drik Expeditions and Mark of Heroes

Apr 13, 2013 11:01:15 Greetings, all. One of my former players is now gearing up to run her own Eberron game, and she wants as much source material as possible. I've managed to scavage a few Eberron adventures from Dungeon, but I'm trying to find the Xen'Drik Expeditions and Mark of Heroes modules for additional fodder. They were apparently RPGA modules for organized play, but despite being an RPGA member (to play LFR at my FLGS), I simply cannot find these modules.

Anybody have any idea where I can get these as PDFs? I e-mailed the RPGA asking for them, but I never got a response.

It seems that their distribution was, and remains, prohibited outside of the RPGA - though you are a member - but also that modules were retired after a while. That seems to indicate that they were no longer legally accessible. One person in the thread above says that the rights reverted to the authors, but that any redistribution would require WotC specific material to be remove for copyright reasons.

Beyond that, I'd be very interested myself in seeing someone post a more positive answer than I can provide. I'm a fan of Vadalis, and I heard somewhere that one module treats with their role in the War of the Mark, but I never got much further than that. A pity - so I hope someone knows of a legal way of getting these.

Of course, not being a member of RPGA will not make things easier for me, I don't currently have a group to run with, and have never made the move to 4e, so I don't expect them to continue supporting 3.5 modules. Perhaps they can release them (for a fee, even), along with the recent move to republish 3.5 items.

Apr 15, 2013 1:51:23 The two campaigns have retired years ago. The RPGA is not allowed to distribute them anymore, but I don't think that the authors are either allowed to do so. I cannot remember reading anything in the contracts about the rights reverting back to the author, but I admit that 8 years after having written an adventure for Mark of Heroes my memory on those contracts is a bit spotty ;) Note that while I had a lot of fun in both campaigns, they were not world altering, high on campaign information content. The campaign information stuff on Xen'drik is actually in the campaign book Stormreach.

Apr 15, 2013 12:13:13 I've looked into this a fair bit, since we just finally received permission to redistribute the Ashes of Athas adventures for the Dark Sun campaign. We were granted that basis in part because we just concluded the campaign and there was high demand for the adventures. It was something we had been discussing over the course of more than a year, while the campaign was still active. I'm positive that Wizards won't do that for older campaigns for various reasons. Wizards does allow distribution for the current Living Forgotten Realms campaign.

The key is that without Wizards' permission, content outside of the OGL cannot be distributed. This includes all non-SRD material, which includes all setting material and all setting-specific monsters. For settings like Eberron, Dark Sun, and Planescape, it makes it just about impossible to write something that feels like the setting and can actually be shared. (That's on purpose, they smartly want to protect their intellectual property).

Specific to RPGA campaigns, they are filled with content that can't be shared. And, the ownership is questionable. Even if an adventure were fully owned by an author, due to the above they still can't share it (and neither can Wizards!).

That's a long way of saying that you can't obtain them or post them or share them. What you can do is watch E-Bay and grab them when you find them for low prices. They can be found at times for about $4, though it takes patience and some are far easier to find than others.
