| #1JTXNov 17, 2008 15:28:21 | Hi, There is a friend of mine in a group I am DM'ing in 4e. He has read alot of Salvatore and loves Athrogate, he wants Oil of Impact for his weapons. But I cannot find Oil of Impact for 4.0 rules in any books, websites or forums. If anyone knows the stats or if this is even possible to put it on a weapon that would be fantastic. Any home made recipes and stats people have made up that work well would be appreciated. Regards, |

| #3koukNov 17, 2008 23:42:30 | I believe Oil of Impact was like Oil of Keen Edge, but for blunt weapons. That exact mechanic is probably not a good idea for 4th, because almost nothing increases crit ranges short of paragon paths and permanent enchantments. There are "Whetstones" however, in the Adventurer's Vault, which are temporary enhancements to weapons. They provide higher enhancement bonuses than a weapon might have by itself, or alternate effects and energy damage. They are not really low level items, and some of them are not really useful, but consumables shouldn't be overly attractive because then being strong is a matter of how much money you spend on them. |

I was just converting the 2e version of Oil of Impact for a treasure trove in my 4e campaign. (I have been using the old 2e DMG and TOM as a source for some consumables as I am trying to make found magic items more rare in my campaign) Here is my homebrew conversion of the 2e item (any feedback appreciated :D ): Oil of Impact Level: 3 Special: This oil has beneficial effects on blunt weapons and missiles, both magical and non-magical. When applied to a blunt weapon such as a club, hammer, or mace it bestows a +3 bonus to attack rolls and a +4 bonus to damage. The effect lasts 1d6+2 rounds per application. One application will treat one weapon. When applied to a blunt missile, such as a hurled hammer, hurled club, sling stone or bullet, it bestows +3 bonus to attack rolls and a +3 bonus to damage. The effect lasts until the missile is used once. One application will treat 4 sling stones or 2 larger weapons. A flask of oil of impact holds 1d4+1 applications. Applying the oil during combat is a minor action. |

This obsoletes all bladed weapons since they cannot keep up with the much superior and very cheaply treated blunt weapons. My advice, just give a simple damage boost for a single strike and be standard to apply as well |
| #6emelJan 01, 2009 22:00:05 | Ok, here is my nerfed version. I see your point, it is probably too powerful. Oil of Impact Level: 3 Special: This oil has beneficial effects on blunt weapons and missiles, both magical and non-magical. When applied to a blunt weapon such as a club, hammer, or mace it bestows a +2 bonus to attack rolls and a +2 bonus to damage. The effect lasts for one strike (miss or not). When applied to a blunt missile, such as a hurled hammer, hurled club, sling stone or bullet, it bestows +2 bonus to attack rolls and a +2 bonus to damage. The effect lasts until the missile is used once. One application will treat 2 sling stones or 1 larger weapon. This flask of oil of impact holds 2 applications. Applying the oil during combat is a standard action. |
| #7leo_davJan 01, 2009 22:49:56 | Remove all attack bonuses as it is unwarranted at all and still makes it very powerful. |
| #8Seeker95Jan 02, 2009 8:07:56 | In my agreement with leo's suggestions, I offer this: Oil of Impact Level: 3 Special: This oil has beneficial effects on blunt weapons and missiles, both magical and non-magical. When applied to a blunt weapon such as a club, hammer, or mace it bestows a +2 bonus to damage rolls. The effect lasts for one successful strike. When applied to a blunt missile, such as a hurled hammer, hurled club, sling stone, or bullet, the effect lasts until the missile is used, even if the attack is unsuccessful in striking the target. This flask of oil of impact holds 2 applications. One application will treat 1 weapon, but is sufficient for treating 2 sling stones or bullets. Applying the oil during combat is a move action. ********* Changes:

Here is what I landed on for my game: Oil of Impact | Level: 3 Special: This oil has beneficial effects on blunt weapons and missiles, both magical and non-magical. When applied to a blunt weapon such as a club, hammer, or mace it bestows a +2 bonus to damage [fire]. The effect lasts for one successful strike. When applied to a blunt missile, such as a hurled hammer, hurled club, sling stone or bullet, it bestows +2 bonus to damage [fire]. The effect lasts until the missile is used once (miss or not). One application will treat 2 sling stones/bullet or 1 larger weapon. This flask of oil of impact holds 2 applications. Applying the oil during combat is a standard action. I went back and forth but I think I will keep it a standard action. So use to use it, it would take the following:
|
| #10Seeker95Jan 03, 2009 12:46:56 | Applying the oil during combat is a standard action. I would never choose to use this magic item in combat if it takes a standard action to apply it. There is no way I would ever choose to give up a single attack with normal damage in one round just so I can gain a +2 to damage in the next round. If applying the oil takes a standard action, it has too high of an opportunity cost to risk using. I don't know if I am in the minority on this opinion, but I just can't justify the cost in terms of what I could do instead of gaining a +2 to damage. |
| #11emelJan 03, 2009 13:00:44 | Maybe applying as a minor action then? then I could see this happening:
What do you think of that? |
| #12Seeker95Jan 03, 2009 18:42:56 | Minor works for me, although I would make it a move action. Either way, it makes the decision to use it more a matter of "is this the right time to use it up" question, rather than a tactical sacrifice that would be required for a standard action. See what other think in the move vs. minor options. |
