| #1saldachMay 08, 2009 4:07:27 | hey all... i was playing an awesome Kir-Lanan rogue/shadowcasrter in 3.5 and am now playing a shadar-kai Dark Pact Warlock/rogue... the DM is wanting to bring the essences of our old characters over (story plot) and i need help making a 4e kir-lanan... the kir-lanan and shadar-kai are to be infused but the kir-lanan personality will win over... any help and/or ideas would be greatly appreciated.. |

They haven't changed much, but instead of hating all deities, those remaining now worship Shar, as Shar's nihilist philosophy happened to sit well with theirs. As for a rogue/shadowcaster, without any more info, I guess in 4e it would be best represented as a Trickster Rogue multiclassed Dark Pact Warlock. Not too different from your shadar-kai, and perhaps exactly the same if the kir-lanan didn't have more rogue levels than shadowcaster. |

The biggest issue with a full kir-lanan is that they can fly, which seems like a more powerful feature than offered by any other playable class. If you were half-KL, though, perhaps the flight could be an encounter power, kind of like the windsoul genasi racial feature? If you wanted to be a full kl, and thus be able to fly, it might not be hopeless. KL's are vulnerable to radiant damage, so the DM could always send lots of radiant damage-users at you to help balance things. I suspect that paladins and clerics of Selune, for example, might be irritated by a kir-lanan on the loose. The best place to shop your idea is the character optimization board, b/c those people could instantly tell you whether your idea was unbalanced or not. I have no idea if, for example, only take a +2 to your ability scores (rather than 2 +2s) would balance out the fly ability. And some of it has to be game specific -- a bunch of radiant wielding NPCs could keep you in check, but not if your DM doesn't want to have to do that. I really haven't studied the new races in phb2 to have the best sense for what falls in the circumference of a balanced playable race. If nothing else, though, I think you should make a list of the powers you want to have, and find comparable examples of those powers in the core races (or the MM races). If you write up a proposal, it would be easier to determine if it was reasonable, what needs to change, etc. The 'mobile melee attack' should almost certainly be a feat. Same probably goes for the combat advantage thing and the 'necrotic healing' ability. I hope this was helpful -- pardon my disorganized thoughts. |

Because while a typical kir-lanan is way too strong compared to the other playable races, I believe it could make a very nice tailor-made paragon path. The dragonborn racial paragon path already gives at-will flight (as long as you end each turn on the ground), and it wouldn't be too hard to balance the few other abilities to represent your character slowly turning into a kir-lanan. |
| #6saldachMay 16, 2009 13:35:11 | Ty both paul and borris... our DM was scik 1 week, and we had off last week so haven't gotten together but i do plan on talking to the DM this week... paul, gonna post on the boards you suggested and see what they say. and yes the character is gonna be 1/2 n 1/2, although with more kir-lanan traits. (just cause the kir-lanan are awesome!!!) borris, our characters are lvl 9 atm and just received the "spirits/essences" of the old characters... infused with each other... for cosmetics purposes my shadar-kai is starting to grow little horns... fingernails seem to be growing longer, harder, sharper... "itchy bumps on my back (wing area, but no-one else n the group knows that yet)... and developing a fond taste for raw meat. concerning the paragon feat, that makes it seem more like the transformation is a class thing rather than a racial which is how we're playing it out... but, again, TY v v m, both of you... the suggestions have helped a lot and i hope to be able to come up with something by the weekend to start better role-playing the character rather than just having him fight cause i have no idea what's going on with him PS - if anyone else as any ideas to help with the process, they would be greatly appreciated. |
