What happened to these guys? I know Entreri split off to go out on his own but he was merged with a Shade at one point, was he killed? And I see Jarlaxle is around, but any idea on what he's been up to? and Athrogate...must stop rhyming but at the same time he's deep and I'd like to know what happened to these people.

-Here's a timeline:

"That Curious Sword" (Realms of Shadow), Promise of the Witch-King, Road of the Patriarch

-Entreri accidentally absorbs the essence of a Shade, and this changes his physiology in some way that hasn't been fully explained. Then, the two enter into the service of two Dragon sisters, move up to Vaasa, and so on and so on.

I know that much. Just was wondering what happened after that. After Entreri went back to his birthplace and then separated from Jarlaxle.

The FR Campaign Guide talks about Bregan D'Aerthe and Jarlaxle on page 250 and 251.

It includes Jarlaxle's stats, his demeanor, combat tactics and general information about how to run him.

The artwork is pretty cool, too.

Unfortunatley there's no mention of Artemis Entreri (that I could find), nor a summary of the intervening events of the last one hundred years.

They're saving that lore for a future Salvatore novel, methinks.

-As a minor character, I have no problem with him. Were it up to me, he would have been killed. But, as a major protagonist of a story, I want no part of it. R.A. Salvatore exaggerating Dwarves to the point of nonsensica yet again.

What goes up is sure to come down

Satilites have gone into space and yet to come down.

-I wish they'd kill Athrogate...

And I wish they'd kill Drizzt, but what can I do?

At least Athrogate was willing to do "evil deeds" when working for the assasin place. Do you enjoy stupid dwarfs rhyming in Drizzt novels any better and working for the good of the realms like the other 80% of the world? Or do you like Mr.Do'Urdens diary letters, that for some reason appear in the sellswords series when I am contempt of reading soloey Jarlaxell and Artemis.

Besides, would have been cool to see party vs party battle:
Drizzt and the retard crew (usless half-ling)
vs Artemis,Jarlaxell,Athrogate
Athrogate would rock bruenor hardocre.

My guess? If he actually has the initials R.A., then it involves some vulgarity.

I don't think Athrogate will be a factor unless R.A.'s books continue to sell well and he runs out of ideas for his stories.

As for Enteri, I find it ironic that right before all the 4e crap goes down, he absorbs some Shade and Catabrie decides to become a mage under Alustriel.

Sounds to me like he wants to expand the lifespans of both.

-The part with Entreri absorbing the essence of the Shade, that happened in...2002? 2003? That predates ruminations of 4e for a few years. The reason for that was most likely because of the Sellswords books that he would be writing. The part about Catti-Brie, though? That, I see pure 4e transition. Though, it is likely that she's going to be dying at some point.

yeah okay Athrogate was what already in his 3rd century of life.

he is dead

-Doesn't mean anything. I believe that either Jarlaxle or Athrogate himself mentioned some kind of magical enchantment/curse that was keeping him alive, and that this was what intrigued Jarlaxle.

Wasn't aware of the timing--so I'll grant you the reasoning on that.

On the other hand, it does seem to me that R.A. has a problem with his two favorite human characters not being able to stick around with Drizzt.

Cap: "You murderous piece of trash!" *Punches him*
Frank Castle: "They were killers and theives cap"
Cap: "Shut up!" *Kicks him the face*
Cap: "Fight me you coward"
Frank Castle: "No, not agaisn't you"

I don't think Castle sees himself as a "bad guy". He just has a different style of dealing out justice. And he has always been the same, I don't think he was trying to turn himself around to be anything new..."good" if you will. Ever read about him with moonnight? He's still as hardcore as he use to be. Cap is a sad excuse for a hero. He could have won the civil war if he didn't let his emotions get the best of him. Also as I stated before, they took out the punisher during the final civil war battle, because bullets is gg. Lazers and fireballs are like a punch in fantasy worlds. They really don't do much damage for some illogical reason. Here's an idea! Let's have someone shoot a super sonic blast at another super hero and only a little bit of their costume is ripped!

No, the three guys Punisher killed (Plunder, Jack O Lantern, Stilt Man) were trying to be good guys and make up for the bad stuff they did. And no, Steve would have lost the war no matter what, he realised that during the fight, the Anti side was hopelessy out numbered and even if they beat Tony and the others they would ahve the American Goverment fall on them.

No, they stated: "The villian community is more worried about S.H.I.E.L.D than anyone else, so if you need us, we're here"

And no, Steve would have lost the war no matter what, he realised that during the fight, the Anti side was hopelessy out numbered and even if they beat Tony and the others they would ahve the American Goverment fall on them.

No, Tony Stark was at his last death blow with Cap. When he surrendered because he had thought that they were just "fighting, not arguing anymore", spiderman than stated: "Cap, we were winning back there man!"
Cap: "Stand down, that's an order"
Besides, the goverment wouldn't know what to do without stark leading them.

Wulfgar and Cattie-Brie's deaths seemed very implied in 'The Orc King' as he did bring their stories to a close.

He also shattered Cattie-Brie's hip, making a Half Drizzt/half Cattie-Brie child impossible. This much was said in "The Orc King" when the clerics told Bruenor that she likely couldn't have children and that she was near the end of her child having years anyways.

Still, in a world were people are brought back from the dead and dragons fly the skies, never say never.

RA is actullay coming to a bookstore in Orlando about 5 minutes from my house next month for a book signing, maybe I'll ask him

BTW- I really like the Drizzt books, but really really really HATE his little manifestos at the beginning of every chapter. Skip those and you'll enjoy the books alot more and be done in half the time.

I have a noob question? Why do authors wait a year in between releases? Do they not have all the novels written?

-A bunch of possible reasons. They stagger releases because:

  • The actual next novel is not written yet.
  • The author/editor wants to incorporate the events of the latest sourcebooks/novels in their novel, and as such, needs to be current of events going on. As such, novels can't be written a long time in advance.
  • Book releases are staggered as to maximize profits. Selling things as hardcover individual releases, and then as softcover individual releases is going to net you more profit than releasing everything at once, with compilations and gift packs and such.

I understand about the other projects. I was just curious about this triology. Thanks you both for your input. I just get frustrated at waiting for the next one in the series when I get so into the one I'm reading. I know some of you aren't into Drizzt and his novels but hey to each his/her own right? Drizzt and Raist were the first books that started me on this genre so I'm loyal. When I was gaming years ago(only stopped because no one wanted to anymore) I ran into a character named Worf who,get this, not only was anagsty ranger but somehow had adamantium skeleton and claws to match. Needless to say our DM had us run into a cadiableepos(sorry for the blotched spelling I should be flogged and drawn and quartered) which by the luck of the roll ended up killing him with its stare. Long story short I ended up with a +3 broadsword and adamantium chainmail with our DM laughing non stop. Just one way to get rid of an overzealous fanboy. Lol

If you're reading it to gain some knowledge on certain things then you wont be bored because it goes into detail about a certain event pre4e and who was involved. However if you are looking for a fun story and are not a Drizzt fan then it will be displeasing for you sir.

There are hints througout the book of shadowy figures who are working behind the scenes. You kinda figure it out as soon as they are mentioned. RAS doesn't seem to give it much effort to hide who it is. But yes Kimmuriel arthogate and Jarlaxle are in this book. It only takes place a short time after Orc King pre 4e

ok, (I know I'm new to this forum, so Bear with me a bit) In our campaign, my DM has decided that the weapons Athrogate owns would make a good inclusion into our campaign (how I supposedly got them is IMO a load of bull but I digress) the forgotten realms wiki has very basic info in regards to Athrogate, I'm looking for more information...what the side effects are (other than the multiple personalities), how to deal with them, how to get rid of them, etc etc etc, yes, he has already said that he has modified them from the books, but even this knowledge would be a good stepping stone.

Also (slightly OT but) What rules apply in regards to Artifacts/relics- Is simply touching them enough to activate them, or do you have to actually USE them, so far I've been unable to unearth rulings either way, he has said that due to the sword of kas (another relic found in the room we're in...again, see above about the load of bull part) being sheathed, and us picking it up by its scabbard, we didnt activate it, however, my character (supposedly) picked both of these up (only semi-logical way) would have been picking them up by the shaft. do any edition (we play a modified second edition (yes, old, I know but)) rules state "activation" of artifacts/relics?

I figure Jar just uses a sending spell, sedning scroll, or sending stone to keep tabs on Kim. I figure he also has spies within the organization which sends reports to him and Jar probably scries on Kim alot. These are drow we're talking about after all ;).

Actually he does have a scrying crystal disguised as one the many baubles on his person. But kimmuriel reports to Jarlaxle simply because Jarlaxle is fully in charge since Entreri left in Road of the Patriarch. Jarlaxle doesn't wander around willy nilly without his gang of hoodlums anymore. They do however have reenactments of "West Side Story" with Jar as the leader of the Sharks and Kimmuriel as the lleader of the Jets with Athrogate playing the love interest Good show though

Let's make it a point that Athrogate became a product of a forced novel and story. I doubt RAS ever thought he'd write an Enteri and Jarlaxle novel to begin with. There has to be some fillers.

On a side note Can anyone point me to a thread where it might have the author's reeaction to the changes in 4e? I would be interested to here what they think. (I saw the threads on the General forum but they tend to have a single author or designer responding for the whole)

SPOILER AHEAD DON'T READ FURTHER IF YOU HAVEN'T READ "ROAD OF THE PATRIARCH" or "PROMISE OF THE WITCH KING".

When Artemis was first introduced I do believe he was LE simply because of his "code" and because of his nature(evil) and his profession (assassin). He followed that code to the letter of his law and never detered from it for any reason. LE to a T in my book.

However since Silent Blade his code has started to break a little to where he's thinking more about who he is and is his "code" truely the right way to live his life.(His trip to Menzo open his eyes a great deal because he saw himself and his code multiplied by 20,000 and he was disgusted by that). Throughout the next 3 novels that included him and Jarlaxle i've sseen him go from a passionless killer to actually caring about who he kills and developing friendships and even a relationship. In the end of the last book he's in after the effects oof Idalia's flute has taken him to his home IMO he renounces his "code" which made him LE and simply became "indifferent" albiet still evil and thus became NE.

What happens when a person(Entreri) dies who(as far as I know) has never prayed or paid homage to a god but is so engrossed in his profession(assassin)? By being so "religious"in the way he hones his craft would he become a faithful to the god(Cyric) of said craft.?
#107

crossroads_wanderer

Feb 11, 2009 13:25:27
If he doesn't actually pray to a deity, then no, he would not become a member of the faithful simply by being of a certain profession. However, if he really makes a name for himself and draws the attention of a god, I could see them trying to adopt him even after he dies. I don't know if it's really possible, but there are demons that try to lure away people arriving in the plane of the dead, so I could see other gods trying to lure away souls as well.

I think that after the "Ghost King" that RAS should have 1 book that wraps up all the plotliones still open in 3.5e. He should have it sealed in some type of cover so that you have to buy it. When you buy it and get home and open it and settle down to read it on the firat page it should read in bold letters filling the entire page "everyone dies but Drizzt and his cat" and then leave the 300 or so other pages blank.

I believe that we both know that Jarlaxle can learn anything he really wants from Entreri easily enough, should he choose to do so.

As for blackmail? That would be a last resort wildcard for Jarlaxle to play, so I doubt he would even consider or pursue such a thing.

Consider possibilities for it, yes. Actively keep it in his plans? No.

As you know, we agree on this.

Surprisingly, I thought it was one of the better novels RAS has written in some time—minus the last 20 – 30 pages or so.

I’m sure LK has a book review around here that I’ll need to look into.

I thought so too.

No LK hasn't read it yet

-No, haven't read it, and I have no interest in reading it, either. Isn't that horrible, that I have no interest, at all? Geeze...

No interest or are you desensitized to RAS?

-No interest. Usually, in the past, I've picked up his books because they're relevant to the setting and all, but with the newer books not being relevant to any setting that I am interested in, I haven't even had the slightest tingle of wanting to pick it up.

The latest Salvatore books have taken place pre-Spellplague. They are events that happen just before the Spellplague, so if you are playing a campaign that stops well short of it, then there may not be any use, but I don't think RAS is going to go full-on into 4e Realms until after this trilogy.

Correct. But according to the Amazon descrption of "Ghost king" RAS is delving into Spellplague pretty hardcore. I think he's going to have a few novels from Spellplague to 4e. Unless "the ghost king" is @ least a 1000 page novel to wrap up plotlines

I understood that you were stating an opinion, I was confused about what you were arguing. How does caring for someone rule someone out from being evil? Evil characters can care for certain people too.

I agree, and in any case there's very little information about Zak and Jarlaxle's relationship to go on. We have no idea to what extent they "cared" for each other.

Well, time frame shouldn't be a deterrent. It's 3e, but definitely RAS's RSE to a degree.

I enjoyed it far more than The Orc King.

They were "friends" by proclamation. And shared the same views of drow culture.

Statements by Jarlaxle in previous novels.

I'm almost tempted to go back and read all the CENSORED just so I can jot down interesting points like this.

Like Dookie my memory is a little hazy but one passage from Jarlaxle in the Silent Blade pretty much sums it up
Jarlaxle: Perhaps I saved you as a favor to your dead father
Drizzt stares at Jarlaxle
Jarlaxle: We were freinds, If any of us could have been friends, We both were survivng in a world we both hated but couldnt leave.

the above is paraphrasing but the gist is there. Plus there's a passage near the end of Servant of the Shard where Jarlaxle is speaking with Entreri again this is paraphrasing:
Jarlaxle: Once a long time ago after sparring with a friend in Menzoberrazen(though it was more through luck than skill that i won) he mentioned that his son was shaping up to be the greatest warrior of Menzo perhaps even Faerun. His name was Drizzt.
Entreri: And is he?(referring to Drizzt)
Jarlaxle:Smiles enigmatically(as far as Entreri knows Drizzt is dead)

Again both sections are paraphased but in both Jarlaxle clearly mentions Zak as a friend. and both these novels take place Before the book CW is currently reading so no from you Judge about spoiling plotlines

I guess I just don't remember it that well then. The first and only time I read it was when it first came out in 2000, so I was 10. It also wasn't one of my favorites. I thought it was a little funny when RAS chose to expand off of that book for the Sellswords trilogy, because Servant of the Shard was my least favorite book (at least until I got to The Orc King, but then again I liked PotWK less than TOK...). Basically I haven't liked any of them since the last book of The Hunter's Blades Trilogy.

-I don't consider it 3e. While it is physically set in 1374 DR (I think), it was written with the 4e Forgotten Realms design philosophy and mantra in mind. I'm not particularly interested.

Such an excuse is, therefore, weak.

His logic is CENSORED everyday. The problem is having enough people catch it and point it out in the proper timeframe.

-Yup. I was interested in seeing where the story went. Having read it, and not really having enjoyed where the story went, I'm not going to be getting the second book in the trilogy.

So LK, I have a Question? If Amazon's description of "TGK" is true will you read that? Maybe get a different author's viewpoint on how the Spellplague went down(Even if it's not a timeframe you play in or an author you're not that into?)

No. Because to a mind as meticulous as his own, it would require him to read the previous two novels.

Therefore, all three are considered null in the equation.

Well he already read "TOK" and through my inane and non repectful babbling and posting on "TPK in here he has a explanation of what happened in that book, and since everyone in here is looking for info on the spellplague I just figured it would be logical to read "TGK" for the sake of gathering info from a book that takes place during The Spellplague even if it's only a small part of the spellplague

Mm... Back to the topic.
I heard the rumor that Calihye was pregnant in RotP 'cause she had those weird moodswings, cried over Parissus's picture and almost stabbed Entreri and then cried again. Is it true? What do you think?

-I wish they'd kill Athrogate...

Hey, Athrogate is one of my favorite characters, and could have ALLOT of interesting story behind him...

On topic... Jarlaxle has already been spoken fore, being alive & fully statted...

Athrogate was nearly 360 years old during the events of The Ghost King - and still in his prime... Dwarves live to about three centuries, and Athrogate was cursed with long life by some wizard.. So he could still be around.

Artemis... His encounter with the shade has been very vauge & non-specific.. So, RAS could find some way to give him long life.. But I dought it. He was already in his 40's in "Road of the Patriarch"...

Mm... Back to the topic.

To my knowledge, Calihye was definitly not pregnant, and she DID try to kill Entreri, but was stopped by Kimmuriels psionic powers. Artemis then throws her out the window a dozen feet to the street below..

Her reasoning behind this was that, Entreri killed Parissus -unintntionally, and then she fell in love with him afterwards... Entreri is then leaving the Bloodstone lands, and since she's torn between reveng and "loving him".. She opts for the former... and instead of dying on the street Kimmuriel has her "rescued" to be some sort of contact with the cidatel of assasins.

Like Delta said, this occurred in a short story released in one of the various Realms anthologies - That Curious Sword, which was featured in the Realms of Shadow anthology. The story was fairly straightforward as I recall -

Show
Entreri runs afoul of a Shade who seeks Charon's Claw, a fight ensues, and Entreri learns a neat trick - using his life-absorbing dagger on a Shade draws out some of the Shade's shadow essence - and he finds himself revitalized, not only in terms of regaining spent stamina, but regaining some of the vigor he had lost with age.
