Let me start this off by saying that of all the settings of D&D, I know the realms best, which is to say that I know less than nothing about all other settings.  That out of the way, I have an idea for a Realms homebrew.  Take the level of technology/magic from Eberron, and an overwhelming presence of dragons, and put them on the large continent where Faerûn and Kara-Tur and Zakhara are.  The reason for this homebrew is that again, I know less about any other setting in terms of history and lore than I do about the realms, and my players like epic combat against mighty beasts of legend, and they like the technology of Eberron.  So, here's the thought.

Take the massive continent and use that (primarily) as the setting allowing for planar travel to the planes surrounding the FR material plane.  The rest of Toril will be as if it were lost to time; it still exists, but largely, it is undiscovered, or forgotten to the ravages of time and war.  Now, the time period for this setting is about a thousand years or more after the events of the Spellplague, which was the cause for a massive influx of dragons into Abeir-Toril, as well as a small influx of the magic and technology of Eberron. And within a few decades of arriving on Toril, the chromatic dragons started banding together to subjugate, and when it pleased them, eat the humanoids. The metallics opposed the chromatics, and gem dragons stood by, uninterested in the goings on.  Note that the chromatics VASTLY outnumber the metallics and gems, so, not surpizingly, the metallics face a hard fight alongside the races of men to stop the oppression the chromatics desire.  The gem dragons, however, ignore the events and a few hundred years after the influx, find the remains of the dragonking Io.  And they want to bring him back, to rule as he should.  Only, Bahamut and Tiamat (if they are in FR, else I'll replace their analogs with them) don't want that, so they try to frustrate those plans while still facing their war against each other.

The races of men, however, in the time since the influx, have begun toying with the knowledge imparted by their Eberron friends, and have developed their own Warforged armies.  At the center of the fight against outside forces are the small Kalashtar communities that have been ported to the Realms, and the Changelings have come to being when wizards played a bit too much with polymorph spells.  So, there are a few plots going on now; the battle between Tiamat and Bahamut; the return of Io, the repulsion of the Far Realms and finally, a restoration of the Weave through the elevation of another Weave keeper.

What are your thoughts?  I know it feels thrown together without much, if any, cohesion, but that's why I'm asking for thoughts here.  Again, I am going to stress that all of this happened as a result of the Spellplague; the weave of magic was thrown out of balance in Toril, which I envision as a poket universe, to suck magic from nearby universes, namely Krynn and Eberron, to compensate.

Oh man why do you got to do that to the Realms!!!!

Seriously though, sounds kool. Big dragon wars are always kool in my book. Sounds like a workable idea, and with all those dragons you dont have to worry too much about what Cormyr, or Waterdeep, etc. are like a 1000 years later, you just say they was wiped out by dragons or whatever. The big question in my mind is what about the other gods? wouldnt they step in and try to stop all this from happening? or did they have some other things going on?

And yes Bahamut and Tiamat are both represented in the Realms.

The other gods?  Hm... good question.  That is something I hadn't thought about.  My first thought was that the affairs of dragons impact the other gods little.  But after thinking about it, a lot of gods would be pissed to see Io resurrected, and a lot of gods would want to put their hands into this affair because their interests are at stake.  Grummsh would be pleased with this development and would try to make it a reality, even if the dragons don't actually worship him, because dragons wreak chaos, and Correllon would oppose it for the simple fact that Grummsh would want it.  But the thing that I see is that a lot of gods in this game would just stay on the sidelines until their side gets into a really good position because dragons aren't exactly weak by nature, and enough of them could kill gods...

Why would those two have a particular interest in Io's return? Gruumsh doesn't really benefit directly from chaos unless it involves his faithful. Havoc of any malicious stripe? That's more Cyric's schtick. And the gods wouldn't allow the dragons to overrun Toril. Cyric and Shar might, but not even Gruumsh or Lolth would accept it. Dragons aren't subservient to them, and they pose too big a threat. Thing is, the gods would put aside their differences if their churches on Toril face annihilation at the talons of dragons (yes, even enemies, save for maybe C + S). And an army of dragons doesn't stand a chance against the combined might of the gods and their faithful, who would in turn rally the other willing mortal non-dragons.

True, but isn't Grummsh all about subjugation of "lesser" or weaker people and tyranny and all that? Maybe I'm thinking of someone else, but I'm pretty sure that Correllon opposes anyone that tries to enslave the elven people, and dragons say that elves taste better than humans...

I could see Gruumsh helpin out the dragons if he was promised a seat of power in the new dragon regime. I could see orcs being a big part of the evil dragons army. I can see Cyric playing a part too. He was imprisoned for 1,000 years so if youre playing it in the futrure he would definalty be free and able wreck to havok again.

Definalty get rid of Bane. I see him as holding Tiamats leash and keeping her in check, so id have Tiamat off him and take over his porfolio. Id have some sort of inter deity polotics goin on or something to keep the gods busy so they dont see whats up until its too late. i could definatly see Shar and Cyric helpin out there.

Well, it's subjugation of the weak... at the hands of the orcs. Since the orcs are going to be playing second fiddle to the dragons, I see no reason why he would have a lasting alliance with the dragons. Maybe initially, but the orcs can only stay subservient for so long.

Maybe I'm thinking of someone else, but I'm pretty sure that Correllon opposes anyone that tries to enslave the elven people, and dragons say that elves taste better than humans...

While you're absolutely right that Corellon wouldn't stand for the dragon invasion, he would be no more or less adamant than Moradin or Lolth. It's not that I disagree with you, it's just that I don't see Corellon having a more prominent role than the other gods, unless you so design it.

I could see Gruumsh helpin out the dragons if he was promised a seat of power in the new dragon regime. I could see orcs being a big part of the evil dragons army.

Again, given Gruumsh's "second to none" mentality, I can't see this lasting too long. He's not going to like having to secure the good graces of the dragon gods, nor will he allow the dragons a hold over the orcs.

I can see Cyric playing a part too. He was imprisoned for 1,000 years so if youre playing it in the futrure he would definalty be free and able wreck havok again.

Agreed.

I don't know if Bane has to be offed, so much that he can't have control over Tiamat. Actually, a conflict between Tiamat and Bane is gold, because you can easily bring in Cyric on Tiamat's side. Shar... well, she seems to have her thumb in every pie, so she can fit in too.

Is there a good list of the domains of the FR gods/goddesses and their post-Spellplague domains floating around anywhere?  I'd look at the FRCG, but a lot of posts here suggest that that is the biggest load of garbage.  Hell, even if its just the fluff, I can work it from there.

D&D Insider has an article from a couple weeks ago detailing the domains of the FR deities. If I recall, it's only the greater powers.

They got the lesser gods in there too, its the Exarchs that dont get no domain lovin, which i think is bull, especially seeing as how quite a few of them have their own worshipers. I'm defiantly house rulin that one.

Its in Dragon # 378 by the way.
