That's right, I'm one of them. I'm one of the holy, righteous and uncool. Incredibly unpopular, yet I refuse to quit. Hell, I didn't even get a paragon class, but I still stick with it.

Now, my way more popular counterpart, Tiefling, is making it into the core books. Some might think it's unfair for me, but I figure it's alright since they look more like a distant cousin race to Luskans in Farscape!

Yet, I can't help but wonder, when am I going to show up? Will I be in the Forgotten Realms Campaign Guide? The FR Player's Guide? Dare I say it...a web enhancement? I mean, I know I can get all "holier than thou" sometimes, but seriously... There are at least some players out there who really enjoy letting me do my thing. I think they deserve some info or even a preview, eh?

Signed,
Aasimar

Not until 2012, and it'll be in a web enhancement.

Actually, no one knows when the Aasimar will show up. Or half-orcs for that matter.

-A good question...

Not so much, really. WotC wants to put (or states they do) the whole "heroism" thing back into the Realms. To do that, you are going to focus on the evil in the Realms--the things that PC's can go up against.

Asimar cannot have a focal point if that is the case. You can play them, but they will have no dominance in the current Realms. You simply have to wait for the new Races of Faerun to come out before you know the story and stats.

So... because there are lame DMs out there who can't apparently run "heroic" campaigns without it being forcibly hammered into the rules, everyone has to suffer this "points of light" junk.

Not to mention... if "heroism" was really their goal, why make demonic half-breeds (aka tieflings) into a core race? These two are completely at odds.

No, it's more like a few designers wanted the "kewl!" stuff (tieflings, floating earthmotes, etc) and a few other designers wanted a more "heroic" environment. And since they are not all on the same page, we get a jumbled up concoction that is more like Mulligan Stew rather than a nice roast with potatoes and seasoned vegetables.

Asimar cannot have a focal point if that is the case. You can play them, but they will have no dominance in the current Realms. You simply have to wait for the new Races of Faerun to come out before you know the story and stats.

I don't know... I haven't heard whether or not Aasimar will be statted up in the rules or not. Do we really know we can play one for sure?

Maybe Aasimar will turn into the old tieflings, ignoring the whole upper planar blood thing, so they'll be sick and cool... if you can turn a succubus into a devil, or a blackguard into a paladin, why not an aasimar into a quarter-fiend? Ugh...

I've been with you on this from the beginning. Doesn't mean others don't whine.

Drizzt. The new drow.

The new FR Races of Faerun will stat them. I guarantee it.

Boundless business, light bulb. I'm not an optimist in any sense of the word.

If selling a sourcebook full of additional races that people can play will bring them money, then WotC will be doing it. They already have.

Whether they will do a whole book on it, I don't know--they've already done that. But I can easily see a supplement with that information available.

Seems like their taking a lot of risks with their customer base to guarantee any action on their part if it doesn't fit in with their overall 'plan' for D&D... at least it looks that way where I'm sitting.

Change is inevitable with anything.

My whole reason for starting this thread was because I can't recall one single thing I've heard about Aasimar for 4e. I really like the race. In fact, my favorite character (who has been replaced by my Star Wars character in my sig because of length) is an Aasimar, so my opinion may be biased. I just find it strange that the counterpart to Tieflings hasn't been mentioned...to the best of my knowledge. Yet, I do know what the front cover of the FRCG looks like, what new base class will be showing up (directly contradicts their DDXP layout), and a number of other things thanks to a podcast or two.

But, what I don't know is when these other races that people have invested in for the last [insert number] years will surface again. Gray Dwarves? Deep Gnomes? Hell, Avariel? I can stand to wait a couple of months after the release of 4th, but I don't think I like the idea of waiting for an unnanounced book.

-Well, we know this: Aasimar DO exist in the Forgotten Realms, and in some areas, are somewhat prominent. We haven't been informed of some cataclysm that wipes them all out, so, bar some new information, they WILL exist. Official stats might not be immediatley availible, but they WILL exist.

I suspect Aasimar (or whatever they rename them to, as they mentioned they wanted to rename it for some reason) will show up in one of the Monster Manuals before a setting-specific book.

Aasimar are not unique to the Realms after all, they along with Tieflings are in the 3.5 MM under "Planetouched."

If you are hoping for special feats and paragon paths and such, that will probably be some other book down the line, possibly the PHB2 or "D&D Generic Races Book 2" etc.

Where did you hear this? And why the hell would they "want" to rename them? That makes little sense. Three syllables too much for someone? Find the name too offensive? Think it too silly? Where is God? Why is Elvis dead? Why can't we find Osama? How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop? Where is Waldo!!!

Bear in mind that they're from the early 80's (1983 or so), before the D&D cartoon (which actually had a couple of these guys show up on it. I know at least Kelek and Warduke showed up. Zarak may've popped in, too. And of course Tiamat, although I didn't put up a picture of her toy).

Anyway, top to bottom...

#01 Bowmarc - Good Crusader
#02 Deeth - Good Fighter
#03 Drex - Evil Warrior
#04 Elkhorn - Good Dwarf Fighter
#05 Hawkler -Good Ranger
#06 Grimsword - Evil Knight
#07 Kelek - Evil Sorcerer
#08 Mandoom - Good Warrior
#09 Mercion - Good Female Cleric
#10 Mettaflame - Evil Fire Giant
#11 Northlord - Great Barbarian (Some kind of giant, as he's bigger than everyone else)
#12 Peralay - Good Fighter/Mage Elf
#13 Strongheart - Good Paladin
#14 Ringlerun - Good Wizard
#15 Warduke - Evil Fighter
#16 Zarak - Evil Half-Orc Assassin
#17 Zorgar - Evil Barbarian

Some of them look pretty cool. Next time I run a campaign, Grimsword, Warduke, and Zarak are definitely going to be villains in it. I'll probably also throw in Strongheart and maybe Northlord, too (I love that guys helmet).

And just for the hell of it...

Speaking of value, I wonder what those D&D figurines are actually worth still in the box. Obviously not as much as something from Star Wars, but it would be interesting to get a collectors pricing on them.

Don't know what to tell ya. I'm in Chicago, where I like to think the citizens here are pretty liberal in their thinking, but even here I have been forced to explain why its not as "odd" or "weird" as people think it is. There is a very heavy stereotype about the game that makes people think that only the biggest of nerds play the game and that something has to be wrong in your head to be doing it.

I can easily see this. D&D isn't a mainstream thing to begin with--not like they promote it through commercial advertising. People learn about it through word of mouth and novels they pick up without knowing what it really is. With Puerto Rico being as isolated as it is from the mainland, I wouldn't doubt that 99.9% of the population is in the dark about it.

Your point holds merit. People love the anti-hero. I think all of my characters have at least a small element of darkness to them as do many other people's.

However, I don't think the fault lies in the players, but in the designers. Hear me out. The Aasimar seem very pidgeon-holed in terms of fluff when you read their race description.
Aasimars are usually tall, good-looking, and generally pleasant. Some have a minor physical trait suggesting their heritage, such as silver hair, golden eyes, or an unnaturally intense stare.

Those lines are in every book that described Aasimar, period. Every picture of them (all two or three) features heavy, shining armor and a holy-esque weapon of some kind. So, when people think of Aasimar, they generally tend to imagine a Cleric or a Paladin right out of the box. The race seems almost custom-tailored for this.

Even if that was not the intent, the fact still remains that flexibility for Tieflings was supported to a larger degree throughout a number of different books (if not for the fact that I have seen a number of Tiefling NPC stat blocks, but never an Aasimar). When I saw this thread, my face exploded (it was really gross and I was almost fired)! This is what Aasimar should be like! It's flexible, it's cool, it has lots of backstory for any setting. Artists could have a field day and give us something different than a golden, glowy, holy person.

In closing, the designers need to help players think of Aasimar outside of the box before they become popular.

Well for what it is worth I play three aasimar's. (grant it two of them have minor celestial bloodlines too and one major... but that's neither here nor there.)

I can not be the only guy out there playing them. A friend of mine has an aasimar sorcerer.

Aasimar's don't get the love because people have this screwed up thought process that evil must be cool, and that good guys are pansies.

Personally, I'd pit any of my aasimar's against anyone's tieflings, and it'll be the shiny good one that comes out on top.

I got a Chaotic Neutral Aasimar Warlock, who hunts demons/devils... And everytime I play him, I get flashes of Dante from Devil May Cry. Which is just down right wired. Though his name is kinda funny... "Grim Greycastle". :P

They are, not almost, custom-tailored to paladins as per their favored class-Paladin. That being said, I tend to favor Aasimars with a flaw over a human for the paladin class. The +2 to Wis and Cha are just too good to give up and the 3.5 rule of daylight 1/day, nice! I do wish they had more flavor in FR other than mostly hanging out in the Mulhorand/Impiltur areas though.

No... I think you, just like many other people, are confusing Aasimar with Half-Celestials. Aasimar are like Tieflings, note that I am speaking of 3.x Tieflings here. Aasimar are descended from a celestial bloodline. To be the child of a good-aligned divine being and a mortal, would make one a Half-Celestial, not a Aasimar. Best I can figure, Aasimar are, at most, 1/4 celestial. That would mean they are the grandchild of whatever celestial being did the horizontal tango with their mortal grandparent.

That's easy. To many people can't tell the difference between races such as Aasimar/Tiefling, which are again, at most, 1/4 celestial/fiend, and Half-Celestial/Half-Fiend, which are, as the name implies 1/2 celestial/fiend.

Also, is there stats on these half-fiends and half-celestials?

-Ask him yourself, then. That said, was Magadon referred to as a Tiefling? and, in what context? Was the omniscient narrator voice doing it? In that case, sure, it would be an error. But, if Cale, Riven, or anyone else were doing it, they aren't omniscient, and thus, could be simply using the wrong word, and not knowing it.

Aasimar, with fewer sings of their heritage.

Maybe, but i'm looking at the Celestial bloodline traits and they're.....impressive. Going with the highest bloodline strength you gain +1 to Wis, Cha, and Con by lvl 20, smite evil 1/day, resistance to acid, cold, electricity 5, Alertness, Improved Init., +1 natural armor bonus, protection from evil 1/day, +2 to sense movie, concentration, saves vs. poison, listen, spot, and DR 5/evil. Now granted you do lose 3 effective character levels with the Major bloodline, but still not a horrible trade off and more 'celestial' than an aasimar.

I have. Bah Aasimar! As any good archmagus tyrant knows....even sassy boy knows....Tieflings make better servitors. Seriously I like Aasimar....when my Tieflings and half-devils make them suffer for my amusement.

Tieflings! Tieflings! Tieflings! Tieflings! Tieflings! Tieflings! Tieflings! Tieflings! Tieflings! Tieflings! Tieflings! Tieflings!

Still my tieflings are pale skinned, dark haired, light eyed (green, blue, grey, hazel, etc), gorgeous, and wear tight leather outfits...errr ummm....sorry about that I mean they dress like responsible adults (pfffft whatever that means). Not those hideous freaks of 4e.

Some of my half-devil humans look a bit like those tieflings. Those from 4e not my tieflings above with their hot tight leather outfits.....mmmmmm...female tiefling. What!? Oh, right. Anyways. While others look like what devil "influenced" their human parent. Of course I have little flying imps mixed with halflings......I call them SHRWImps (Short. Hafling. Remade. With. Imps).

I like em very useful, SHRWImps that is, not pigeons. Far more reliable then pigeons. Tried a giant sized messanger launcher once upon a time. Seemed to work fine too.....though there was that problem with landings. Dragons seemed to work as well, yet the occasional misunderstandings did happen. Sparked a few wars and whatnot, what with the occasional "important" individual being eaten or a town or two burnt down. What are you looking like that at me for. Sigh younguns these days! Still it had merit and I personally liked the idea since I am partial to dragons. The way they flutter about or something....seems nearly magical. Hmmm, whats that youngun?

Oh right that is a magical image of me devestating some orc horde. Did it a couple of times. Though that was the biggest horde I singlehandendly destroyed. What!? Ioulaum! Where is that scoundrel?! Whats that? No, no, no younguns I am not the "great" Ioulaum....became an elder brain or something. I doubt that. Seems kinda silly to me. Let the empire crumble he did or something though personally I think it was that foolish youth Karsus. I think ultimate blame resides with the goddess of magic however. Never trust a deity young ones. Why you ask. Why, their mistakes usually end up causing great havoc.....something along the fall of Netheril, I would say. I mean what kind of simple minded idjit lets a mortal have unfettered access to the Art. Someone along the likes of me can use it wisely......though there was that time.....hmmm. Oh yes! Sorry. Now I have mostly used it wisely yet I never did something as silly as disrupt the goddess of magic at a critical time.

Enough stories today younguns! Time to study the Art my favorite subject actually. Did I ever tell you about that wind gust spell and women.........

Either way, I'd get into that if they worked it properly. The gods sending their angels down as messengers and task managers would be a sweet deal. It helps remove the god/mortal intermingling, while keeping the god/mortal intermingling.

Either way, I'd get into that if they worked it properly. The gods sending their angels down as messengers and task managers would be a sweet deal. It helps remove the god/mortal intermingling, while keeping the god/mortal intermingling.

-PCs do something. X deity sends an Angel to "deal" with them. For example, PCs enter into a crypt, as they want to recover one of the Vecna items. Angels monitoring the crypt have been told to not allow anyone to recover said item(s). Thus, the PCs fight LG Angels. Just like it's possible for two LE people/entities to come to blows, so too is it possible for two LG people/entities to come to blows.

Of course angels can be evil.

Oh, indeed. Point taken.

Just, when I was gaming, "angels" didn't exist. When a god wanted you not to do something, he simply sent an army after you or came down themselves.

Had Tempus do both to me. Turd.

As per the preview material, you are sorta right. According to WotC, the origin of tieflings gives them a compelling hook, whereas aasimar weren't seen as quite so compelling or fantastic. The article about this in Races and Classes called it the "Ave Maria" problem, based on two segments in Fantasia ("A Night on Bald Mountain" with the giant, scary demon leaves more of an impression on the viewer than the goodly nuns walking with lights walking across the scene when dawn breaks).

Dude, the Christians that would really get into such a hook are far too holy rollin' to play D&D. It's considered Satanic--yes, even today.

Then you have "Christians" themselves, who, despite whatever they are supposed to represent, are just like everyone else. I'm not too keen on Lathander being replaced. Why did WotC like Amaunator better?

This is just my speculation from my own gaming experiences on both sides (DM and player), but Lathander has an odd "feel" to many people in that he is a greater deity but he seems "young" in maturity and goals. He's fairly straightforward, and perhaps a little "simplistic" in the sense of working toward a "dawn cataclysm" (although people argue about this, so...). The other (odd, imo) thing about Lathander is that they never explored his interaction with female deities - and he is essentially the male "ideal" in terms of physical form and activities. *ahem* Read into that what you will, but I think it would've been interesting to see more of that side of Lathander. ;)

Amaunator on the other hand, is a more "mature" form that can be explored (Lathander could be, but not as much). People will be interested in exploring the new paths this deity will go down, as he likely has different and more complex goals. The fact that he technically held the portfolio of time during the old Netheril age and yet allowed Mystryl to actively oversee it - that speaks to complexity of motive and intent. We also know some tidbits about him already (although this depends on whether you might use the Baldur's Gate information in your own game), which serve well for whetting players' appetites.

Well, Lathander is known to have romanced Tyche (who later split into Tymora and Beshaba) and Chauntea (see the novel Tymora's Luck).

I don't like this Risen Sun business at all. Especially considering that it can't actually be true, as the God of Dusk is very clearly a wholly different being altogether. Not to mention that two aspects of the sun have coexisted before. Highsun coexisted with Dusk, and Dusk coexisted with Dawn. Why can't Dawn coexist with Highsun, and have both Lathander and Amaunator active at once? IMO, the two of them active at once would've been fantastic. *sigh* Wasted opportunities, and all that.

Well, Lathander is known to have romanced Tyche (who later split into Tymora and Beshaba) and Chauntea (see the novel Tymora's Luck).

Heh. Yes, but - okay, let me try a different perspective. Lathander is like a teenager or really young man, but it's hard to see him in a fatherly role. Easy to see him dating, but he hasn't settled and started a family. Lathander is about potentiality, the beginning of things, the planting of seeds and the tender of sprouts.

I suspect (and again, this is all speculation) that Amaunator will be far more mature. As the High Sun, he will represent the maturity of early-to-middle fatherhood, seeing plans come to fruition, the development of strong legal codes (which we already know of Amaunator; and note the change in Cormyr, and their new legal code). He's just a lot more interesting, because he has moved from potential to action. He will also likely resume guardianship of time. They -could- also explore his interaction with the typical counterpart to Sun gods, the (female) lunar deity, Selune. At his strongest, a more firm alliance with Selune would better balance Shar.

If they take that route with Amaunator, it might even make sense to develop an as-yet-little-known aspect who will eventually replace Amaunator (like a "setting sun" old man aspect). One who has a portfolio more strongly tied to wisdom, experience, and the aspects of grandfather-hood. We might see this, maybe, for 5E's RSE. Heh!

I was moved by Amaunator's appearance in BG2. However, I never entertained the idea of him coming back into prominence, much less being revealed as the same deity as Lathander.

I didn't either, really. But it's an interesting way to pull in a realistic idea from mythology and shake up the Realms a little.

Another thing about Amaunator that seems interesting to me, and it fits with the new 4E lore of the Spellplague (at least, with what we know so far), Lathander may have been "forcibly" transformed into Amaunator by the general population of worshippers.

Heh, hang with me for a sec on this. Imagine you're a hapless NPC living in 1385, and -zap!- Mystra is assassinated and the Spellplague causes mass chaos and destruction. What if the general populace learned of Cyric and Shar's treachery (through stories, bards, what have you) and generally become angry that the good gods didn't do much to keep Cyric in check, or punish him for that matter. "The gods have no laws?!" and, "we need a god who will mete out punishment according to law!" go the cries of Faerunians. Perhaps even, "Lathander is supposed to be good and lawful, so what has he done about Cyric?"

In the hearts of millions of faithful, all who want retribution against Cyric for not only Mystra but all the damage and horror caused by the Spellplague, Lathander undergoes a "forced" change. He's forced to become mature, and responsible for upholding the law, not just good for himself and his church, not just lawful for himself and so on...

Perhaps it's the newly risen Amaunator who rallies the good deities against Cyric and give him the punishment we've heard about.

Seems way more interesting to me.

Why can't Dawn coexist with Highsun, and have both Lathander and Amaunator active at once? IMO, the two of them active at once would've been fantastic. *sigh* Wasted opportunities, and all that.

-Oh, yes. All of that has been debated extensivley, with no answer that made sense really stemming from any of it. If I am not mistaken, Rich Baker was asked as well.

Pffft Shar....try far older....try more powerful then Ao.

The Dark Mother is EVIL. She is EVIL, pure and undefinable in her greatness!

Shar is just pathetic and Lathander would be snuffed out if she even bothered to notice him in all his patheticness.

That is the Dark Mother to which I refer.

Realmspace is nice and all yet a whole multiverse awaits and things older and more powerful then Ao exist. Of course this is beyond the understanding of most of those that exist in the realms.

In some sources it is hinted at that Ao may answer to even greater powers. Ao supposedly says that mortals must decide the fate of Toril yet Shar and Cyric conspire to slay Mystra so there goes Ao not bothering to enforce his own decree.

-Indeed. And, yet, Ao is ∞.

-Not exactly. The last scene in the Avatar Trilogy was representative of the DM, and thus, a breaking of the Fourth Wall.

Another thing about Amaunator that seems interesting to me, and it fits with the new 4E lore of the Spellplague (at least, with what we know so far), Lathander may have been "forcibly" transformed into Amaunator by the general population of worshippers.

I find this very likely. With the way things are going in the church, your theory seems sound.

Though, I will state that Lathander is neutral good. Therefore your theory on him being accountable for heavenly deaths isn't quite sound. ;)

Perhaps Lathander was just an alternate personality.

Just because you're suffering with multiple personalities, doesn't mean Lathander is.

If that was the case, I imagine that there would have been some hints or speculation at some point. For the god to just wig out one day and suddenly become Amaunator, Lathander and Michael Jackson doesn't make much sense to me.

Though he would dance a hell of a lot better. Ow!

May 24, 2008 9:36:45
No,no,no. I meant that Lathander was an alternate personality of Amaunator. Amaunator was the original God of those portfolios correct? Just saying that maybe he just forgot himself for a time, within another aspect of himself. Gods are know in different areas by other names and even their personalities are completely different based on area. At least that is how it was portrayed in some of the write ups in earlier editions. So, maybe Amaunator lost himself within the Lathander aspect that people started to follow and was created.

Just a hypothosis to explain the change.

Just a hypothosis to explain the change.

-We have already been given a reason as to explain "what's up". Basically, now, the Sun Deity is a triune deity, with different faces/aspects/manifestations appearing at different times. So, in other words, there is now one greater metaphysical being controlling the Dusk-Dawn-High Sun portfolios. Of course, when analyzed, things begin to break down.

If I was you--whether your into things or not--I would wait. Let the campaign setting come out, then check back here to see what the uproar is during the first week of release. You should have a good idea at that point if its something you're willing to risk buying.

FR 4e is a different story.

All the same, I'm sure you'll find it all cheaper on ebay at no time at all. Do me a favor and pick up that tortilla with Jesus on it while you're at it. I'll give you 10% as a buyers fee.

Oh, just FYI, the Jesus Tortilla was broken and could not be repaired. The lady's granddaughter took it to school for show and tell and dropped it. True story.

So any future sightings of holy Jesus tortillas are likely to be frauds. That's right, FRAUDS! Humanity didn't protect and care for the first one, so there won't be any more. :D

Though seriously, Seraphim for aasimar seems just weird, given that its pretty much just another name for a Solar from what I understand. Nephilim... not sure how I feel about that one, though it would sort of fit... sort of if you squint hard enough and look at it sideways. Celestial sounds better, if somewhat boring, but still not as good as Aasimar to me.
