-The Forgotten Realms is a campaign setting. It has a history and setting unlike other WotC published setting. It is rich in lore and history.

-With the advent and debut of 4e, the Forgotten Realms are having new books written up.

the Forgotten Realms was the best setting ever published for a game and shared world for novels

the Forgotten Realms was the best setting ever published for D&D, before the release of the most recent source books in 4th edition.

The Forgotten Realms was the Greatest Fantasy Setting of all time, and perhaps the single greatest thing to happen to mankind since Fire.

Concerning differences between editions, it bears noting that where 3E Realms was in a number of ways a reboot of the franchise, 4E Realms is a sequel.

No, more like 4e was a reboot of the franchise. 3e was the sequel of 2e.

No doubt there is contradictory material in 4E, but most of the changes either do have an explanation (perhaps not all the reasons given are exactly fine art, but a bad reason is still a reason) or can be waved away with the generic turmoil brought by the Spellplague and the hundred-year gap that followed. Certainly a whole lot more changed between 3E and 4E than what changed between 2E and 3E, but unlike what happened in 3E, the changes toward 4E were less retcon and more evolution.

(Ignoring strictly mechanical or purely cosmetic changes.)

...but most of the changes either do have an explanation...

-A great deal of things actually don't (not having the book, I don't want to say the majority, but as more information becomes apparent, it is looking more and more this way), and this is what is so...disheartening.
