In this video, GamerZer0 interviews Chris Perkins extensively about FR in 4th Edition. These announcements are a bit old now, but there is one thing in the interview that still catches my attention.

It was mentioned that they intended to create an online database of everything FR--one that you could look up any rule, race, city, etc. instantly. If they intended it to be a wiki, I don't know. Things can get kind of polluted with this approach.

(A little off-topic: Chris has a piece of paper above his desk that says "Rich Baker must be stopped!" and that made me chuckle a bit.)

-Our pain is a joke to them. :P

-Just to let you know, that "began" when msatran consistently ended his posts with "Rich Baker must be Stopped!" in the tradition of Roman orators. It soon caught a spark of it's own and became a FR Boards phenominon. Everyone, at one point of time or another, has seemingly needed to be stopped, since.

-But, yes, a Forgotten Realms version of Wookiepeedia would be a welcome thing, no matter who it's maintained by: fans, WotC, whoever.

True enough. I'd use it

It's my understanding that the FR Wiki will be maintained by WotC staff and freelancers (presumably to preserve the integrity of the lore contained therein). But I haven't heard anything about it in a few months. I hope it's still on the roadmap.

Good to hear. That's what I meant by things getting "polluted." You let some guy like Karsus contribute and the whole wiki loses its integrity. :D

Either way, at the point where WotC maintains complete control over it, it is no longer a true wiki. You simply have a database--which is perfectly fine by me.

Except for the fact that I know I'll be paying for it....

Considering how is Wikipedia, a wiki open to any random Joe IS potentialy problematic. Edit wars, by example.

Yes, yes. An open edit wiki would destroy the Realms quicker than the Spellplague.

Never. NOT ever, did I think I could get that out of you.

And I, myself, think its possible I would be blessed with your participation in such a thing.

But wiki's are open things. What you would put down as canon could quickly get written over or modified in part.

Would you like to have to continually go back, check, rewrite and defend what you know as canon? 'Cause that would be what you would be facing.

Think about how many people are willing to argue with you here. Now think of those who would argue with what you would say is fact with FR--especially in light with what just happened on the other thread.

-Why? Though, I realized after the fact that it was you who said it.

-I make no qualms that I am a very proud person.

-I don't think Chris Perkins meant it in that kind of sense, especially if it is going to be maintained by WotC staff/officials. I think it was meant in the sense of like what is availible at Candlekeep- a large database of information, with citations and such- only in the common Wikipedia format, where one can click links within paragraphs, and such.

Great! I'm an "after the fact" guy!

And I am aware you are proud. Most of us are. That's why there is so much back and forth when an issue is dead, simply because people can't swallow there own.

Yes, you would have a unique perspective, but people are always going to try and intrude with their own. Nothing you put down would essentially be safe. You would be at the will and whim of whoever monitored that subject at any moment or time. You get a slacker--or a person overwhelmed with edits--and whatever you put down could easily be lost.

-Not so much as I wasn't paying attention to who posted, rather than what was posted.

-If it's a simple database if citations and information, there really shouldn't be much "perspective", to begin with. There should just be facts.

So much for details. I'd keep crying, but I'm too tired and figure sleep is the better remedy.

And my point dealt with the wiki.

Anything dynamic, with "fan" input, would be bad in my opinion.

-Some kind of "official" review process could eliminate this or, at the least, make it's effects negilible, but, I agree, user submissions would not be a good idea.

No worries--I'm over it. Quickly. ;)

Yes, an "official" review process could take care of things, but then you got to wonder, "What's the point?" If the "officials" are those that are responsible for putting out the material in the first place, then it is just wasted time and effort on their part to try and monitor such a thing.

Much like the example I gave to you about having to defend your own, they would be forced into the same hassles. Might as well dump everything into a static database and let people have access to it. Less time, money and frustration. From a business standpoint, that makes more sense than a wiki.

-I understand. Having edit everything that is submitted to me with my own project, I also sometimes wonder why I ask other people for help. But, it is a lot faster to edit something that is written already than it is to write something from scratch.

-Odds are, as I said, it is probably just a database with citations in the Wikipedia format, sans the editing.

Point taken. But be aware that all of this stuff is already written to begin with. You're literally doing a copy and paste in most instances, because its all filed away electronically as is.

As far as I know, there are many fans of the Forgotten Realms who have made a lot of stories etc. set in the Forgotten Realms. (Working on some myself, actually). Perhaps a FR Wiki/Database could include an option to upload fan-made stories, resources etc.?

Of course, there would have to be guidelines, and some sort of approval process.

Found this at the Official D&D FAQ:

What topic/subjects will the D&D Insider Wikis cover?
We are looking at several wikis, as part of the Gleemax/D&D Community features. The first will be private wikis associated with a DM’s individual Campaign Vault pages—essentially, a wiki a DM may use to flesh out his or her campaign, with restricted permission for others to access or modify.

The second wiki will be open to the entire community as well as select authors and game designers and will primarily be used to compile information related to official campaign settings; Forgotten Realms and Eberron are the first such wikis planned.

The third wiki has been referred to as the Player Repository (name subject to change). Also open to the entire community, this wiki will compile house rules, options and character builds as submitted from around the player community for ranking and potential inclusion in future official releases.
