Hi guys, a friend of mine wanna play for the new campaign that we are setting a character of hispanic inspiration.

He don't know a lot about realms and he told me only that he likes to play a probably human male fighter of spanish inspiration.

So the question is: from which realm he can comes? I can't remind a realm of clearly spanish inspiration but if i think about Maztica and its settlers, i can suppose that Amn could be a good choice, right?

Thanks for the advice Laughing

Of Spanish inspiration? I suppose Amn is his best bet.

Depends on what your friend actually means by Hispanic. To me, that sounds Latin--not Spanish.

If so, then Maztica would be the place. And would give a good background plot to the character, as well. Being one of the few surviving remnants of a continent gone and all...

Don't forget that you could even go with a Waterdhavian who spent a lot of time in and being influenced by the colonies of New Waterdeep or Trythosford.  Maybe even a Balduran from that Fort of theirs, though that seems pretty thin.  And its not like Waterdhavians aren't willing to adopt just about any idea or culture out there and integrating it into their bag of tricks if it appeals...

That and the Realms is a huge place. Whos to say theres not an island of Latinos hidden away somewhere?

That land mass right up there     could be all Latinos. whos to say? They never did anything with it.

Speaking as a person of Mexican descent, don't even joke about entire continents filled with hispanics... the Realms doesn't deserve that horror.  Unless they're an Amazon-like culture, I could go for that... Laughing

mmmmm Amazons...

ok we better shut up now before we turn this thread into an Amazon lovefest.

So to the origianl poster I think youre best bet would be to go with someone from Amn with Maztican heritage, or just make something up.

or just say his parents came from another world via portal magic and they fell in love with the world.

Yup that could happen too, there are portals all over the Realms, Time Gates too. The possibilities are endless.

I prefer to not involve the planes, i like that my players create a pure faerunian (or "torilian" Laughing) character, cuz we are playing "the Realms" not another Campaign Settings or Planescape.

I know that an outsider from another plane (even another material plane) can give an exotic touch, but this is not what i'm looking for Wink

Except this, i was a bit vague in my post. This player wanna play a SPANISH fighter, not hispanic/latino type but hispanic/european type, execuse me for using the wrong terms Tongue out

However reading your posts i can suppose that Amn is the best choice he can do! (i forgot to say that we play before the SpellPlague, particularly during 1371 Year of the Unstrung Harp)

You know, there actually are Amazons in the Realms, in the Vilhon Reach... well, were maybe, no idea if they survived the Spellplague or not.

Yeah, Amn is where the character should derive from. And I wouldn't make him an Amn-azon. Wink

I always got a portuguese/spanish settlers vibe from the areas around the Mhair and Black Jungle areas in Thindol, Samarach and Tashalar. These countries across from Calimport over the Shining Sea we're heavily influenced by the Rundeen, another distinctly "spanish merchant fleet" like organisation. Most cities in these areas are ruled by princes who are fighter/sorcerers, and the merchant classes commonly are seated in their court counsils. Hospitality is a large virtue, and the dishes are spicy.

I'd use the swashbuckler class from Complete Warrior to build this character. Or go for a rogue fighter build focusing on a rapier and feinting, flashy noblemans disguises and horseback riding for a true Zorro like build.

Thats what made him so much fun. Especialy when he and LK would argue about stuff, yet ultimately be in agreement about it. I thought they were married sometimes...

I'm going to disagree with the consensus for Amn. It's plausible, but it has a different 'tone' to it that I associate more with Italian politics - the merchant houses, competing nobles, ruling councils, internal strife, ostentatious wealth on display. Tethyr is a monarchy, with an aristocracy that is rather more 'military' and less 'mercantile', has strong Calishite (arab) influences, and has a surplus of fighting men after a war of unification who could be usefully employed outside the country.

#26

_teo_

Indeed Tethyr is my second choice after Amn.
I think that both the realms can be choose from my player according to his tastes: if he prefers a merchantile background than Amn will be the right choice, if he prefers a warfare background Tethyr will be a better choice.

I'll show him both possibilities and let him choose. Laughing

Lol! say what? now im really confused. Its funny you mention Narnia though as I just recently found out that the Lion from Narnia, Aslan? Was one of the Beast Lords in the Forgotten Realms before it was published. I think hes since morphed into Nobanion.

back in the day, when all was fun, back in the day, TSR had no rights to use Aslan when produced for the shelf, Aslan had to go.

borrowed stuff and all, Its like Battletech has borrowed Mechs....

It was Forgotten Realms, but it was quite a bit before the release of the Old Gray Box Set, it had a listing of the gods as well and they matched up with what was in the grey box, except Tyche was listed instead of Tymora and Beshaba, and the Elemental Lords were taken from the Elric Pantheon. I dont remember what Issue it was in at the momemnt.

Edit: I just checked it was Issue 54.

Well I guess Ed wanted a Lion in there for a Beastlord, and Aslan fit, this was also before the Narnia movies came out and the cartoon, so it probably didnt seem as sappy then. I guess Ed is a big fan of C.S. Lewis.

Nice off-topic Laughing

However i've another question about this spanish character: witch type of armor and weapons could be better for him?
Keep in mind that he will be the tank of the group (composed by Aasimar Favored Soul, Human Wizard and probably an Elf Ranger or Rogue/Ranger) so he need an high AC.
And shied type or two handed weapon type?

Thanks for the answer! Wink

I still prefer Suin's preference of the Swashbuckler for a Spainard, but if this guy is supposed to be a "tank", then heritage doesn't seem like much of a deal here.

Your question defaults to what type of tank he is supposed to be--one that can take significant damage, or one that can dish it?

And what about the typical appearance of the "conquistadores" with a breastplate and a polearm? General Cordell from Amn, the man who begin the conquest of Maztica, has this look nope?
