| #1pamelaSep 25, 2009 11:42:55 | It looks like I will finally be involved in a tabletop campaign setting in the near future - yay! We've got four players so far and are hoping to enlist a couple more. The topic of the thread is pretty self-explanatory - what areas would you consider setting a campaign which aren't heavily explored in terms of lore and novels? Akanul, Tymanter and Returned Abeir are obvious choices; any others spring to mind? |
| #2LordManshoonSep 25, 2009 14:35:02 |
Well, Lantan immediately springs to mind, but I suppose that's not an option, so.... Murghom? High (Should still be Dead and Broken) Imaskar? The Lake of Steam? |
| #3sfdragonSep 25, 2009 17:07:52 | better Imaskar than really should of stayed dead and or gone Netheril.
Netheril Imaskar
that part of returned Abeir |
| #4pamelaSep 28, 2009 13:54:42 | Thanks for the ideas, guys. I'll check them out this coming weekend and then bring 'em up with our potential players. |
| #5LordManshoonSep 29, 2009 21:39:05 |
Let us know how it goes. I have money riding on my choices. It's the money of Westgate commoners, too. You don't want the wretched Westgate lower classmen to lose their life savings, do you? ![]() |
| #6pamelaSep 30, 2009 11:44:36 | Eh, they're only commoners - beneath my notice, I say! :P But yes, I do promise to let you know. |
| #7the_shamanSep 30, 2009 16:46:26 | Is this in 3.5 or 4E timeframe? I was going to suggest Dambrath either way |
| #8pamelaOct 01, 2009 14:21:10 | 4e time frame; time jump all the way, baby! :P |
| #9LordManshoonOct 01, 2009 14:26:57 | Bah. 4E Dambrath isn't worth it. No Crinti? No Loviatans in command? What a ****up. That being said, if you were to consider reinstating the Crinti and Loviatans in your own 4E Dambrath, then it would be fun again. That would be super. |
| #10pamelaOct 01, 2009 14:30:31 | Er, what is Crinti? (Do I want to know?) |
| #11The_SilverswordOct 01, 2009 14:34:21 |
Half-Drow |
| #12sfdragonOct 01, 2009 16:35:31 |
way back in the 3rd edition and maybe the 2nd too they were a race of half-drow, and maybe some 1/4 drow too( human with jet black skin). imo they were wiped out or were enslaved, or left to nomads during the spell plague
they were nothing speical. |
| #13the_shamanOct 01, 2009 16:52:07 | I liked them, actually. Evil half-drow (and the occasional half-elf, long story), peerless r(a)iders, devotees of Loviatar, who had a rather singular feudal state in the far south of Faerun. They were a fairly unusual bunch, and now they are gone, sniveling back at their drow ancestors' feet (like most other half-drow that don't do a Drizzt) and generally being useless so local human culture #17 could have its state back. |
| #14LordManshoonOct 01, 2009 17:20:47 | they were nothing speical. Wrong.
I love the Crinti, which is why my current character is one. They were pretty intriguing, and their state was certainly unique. Of course, it was so unique it didn't survive the Generic Breath of Change.* Now, the humans call the shots.... and nothing special happens there. Ho hum.
*Not an insult/attack/barb aimed at 4E or the designers (both of which I'm a fan). Just disappointment that my favorite race and one of my favorite areas got facepalmed by the time-jump without something more intriguing being established in their place. |
| #15pamelaOct 02, 2009 13:28:36 | Did you make up new stats for the race, LordManshoon or use the half-elf with some tinkering? I must say that the little I read on Dambrath's past did look very interesting. How/why did they associate with the elves anyway? That's the part that really caught my attention and intrigued me greatly, as well as the blending with barbarians. |
| #16LordManshoonOct 02, 2009 17:50:21 |
The latter. Though, with the Drow now a proper race (which it wasn't at the time I designed my Rogue), I think I'm going to go back and create a proper Crinti when I have the free time. I'll just say my Rogue is an unusual Crinti (he's of Kara Turan descent, maybe the blood of Wa is more potent than the average Faerunian's when mixed with Drow). I must say that the little I read on Dambrath's past did look very interesting. How/why did they associate with the elves anyway? That's the part that really caught my attention and intrigued me greatly, as well as the blending with barbarians. They considered themselves superior to elves and other half-elves, though I don't recall them despising their surface kin with as much bile as their full-blooded Drow brethren. And their attitude towards the Arkaiuns is worse; the barbarians are fodder, worthy of subjugation. |
| #17pamelaOct 03, 2009 2:19:34 | I'm meeting with my group for the first time today in a pub - eek! |
| #18the_shamanOct 03, 2009 4:34:23 | They considered themselves superior to elves and other half-elves, though I don't recall them despising their surface kin with as much bile as their full-blooded Drow brethren. And their attitude towards the Arkaiuns is worse; the barbarians are fodder, worthy of subjugation. Well, if I remember correctly their attitude towards elves and other half-elves was "kill on sight, or kill by torture", and neither is much better imo |
| #19LordManshoonOct 03, 2009 15:37:52 | They considered themselves superior to elves and other half-elves, though I don't recall them despising their surface kin with as much bile as their full-blooded Drow brethren. And their attitude towards the Arkaiuns is worse; the barbarians are fodder, worthy of subjugation. Kill on sight > Kill by torture, the latter of which was also used on Arkaiun slaves for fun/punishment. It can also be argued Kill on sight > Enslaved, when your masters are as capricious as drowkin. |
| #20sfdragonOct 03, 2009 18:05:03 | no LM I"m quite correct the crinti were nothing special. this is however far as I'm concerened |
| #21LordManshoonOct 03, 2009 23:46:17 |
See, here's your problem. You're looking at it subjectively. You're ignoring the reality: that they are awesome, and that anyone who disagrees deserves to burn in Avernus. ![]() |
| #2218DELTAOct 04, 2009 0:06:25 | I agree nothing special. I only liked them half the time... |
| #23sfdragonOct 04, 2009 0:16:49 |
and that is still matter of oppinion. I think of them is as much as I do half-elves or half-drow. not to much...... |
| #24LordManshoonOct 04, 2009 0:32:15 |
... I think you're mistaking the severity of my statement as genuine. I'm joshin' ya. I think of them is as much as I do half-elves or half-drow. Racist. ![]() |
| #25pamelaOct 04, 2009 12:17:10 | Well, I actually don't have to worry about where to set the game because my husband's DMing the first game with the Scepter Tower of Spellgard. I shouldn't have to DM for at least another month which means I can bone up on the books. However, I'm playing a revenant bard (yeah not the best choice of class but he really grabbed my imagination) and he's going to try to pawn off his bizarre eyes by claiming he's descended from Crinti. :P |
| #26sfdragonOct 04, 2009 13:11:58 | well how do we know he isnt???
anyway half elves/drow have their places, and they are in the way back armed with long bows.....
and over there behind you with a crossbow |
| #27pamelaOct 04, 2009 15:53:50 |
You know, you're right!
Just showing how smart they are. :D |
| #28the_shamanOct 06, 2009 17:03:30 |
That might not be the best thing you can claim in a mixed company. You can just claim descent from an obscure bunch of moon/wild/whatever elves, and people won't care. |
| #29sfdragonOct 07, 2009 4:04:12 | I could have sharringan eyes on a character in the FR and nobody would care. class bonus to dodge ac, or refleax ac one or the other.... hahahaha
but we digress the eyes topics are off topic for this thread. |
| #30pamelaOct 07, 2009 11:52:21 |
No elves in the present company, so I'm safe. However, as the campaign's starting in Netheril, I'm wondering about using the Shadowfell-descended Netherese as an excuse instead. Suggestions? Oh, and he doesn't look elvish/Drow/eladrin; he looks human. sfdragon, I had to look up sharingan - funky! LOL Actually, I'm using this presently for my character. |
| #31sfdragonOct 07, 2009 17:18:03 | Remy's eyes of fiery death huh? |
| #32pamelaOct 08, 2009 12:32:16 | Yep! I was reading the description of revenant's eyes to my husband and he mentioned Gambit. My X-Men knowledge only went up to the end of the Magik era. My husband had given me some updates (I knew Rogue was going out with him at one point) but I didn't know he also had bizarre ideas till the past weekend. |
| #33The_SilverswordOct 09, 2009 7:21:03 | Slighty off topic, but I thought Gambit was the best thing about the Wolverine movie. He definatly needs his own movie! |
| #3418DELTAOct 09, 2009 8:05:09 | Gambit is the best character in Ultimate Alliance 2. PS2 version that is. |
| #35pamelaOct 09, 2009 14:01:42 | Delta, my husband agrees with you about Gambit in the 360 version of it. He wasn't overly fond of the game otherwise. Sfdragon, I only saw bits of the Wolverine movie (what garbage!) so I can't really say anything about what Gambit was like. As for off-topic - meh, I started the thread and don't have to worry about DMing for at least another month. So go for it till I come back moaning about what to do. :P |
| #36sfdragonOct 09, 2009 19:36:39 | ummm it wasnt me who mentioned the wolverine movie. but I thought it was pretty good... |
| #37The_SilverswordOct 09, 2009 21:13:50 |
Yup that was me that mentioned the movie. I liked it too up until the Adamantium bullet thing. I think it would of made more sense to go with memory implants like in the comic. I mean an adamantium bullet still wouldnt go through adamantium, unless he shot Wolvie in the eye, then hed have to wear an eye patch, like in the comic. .... But the movie did have gambit in it, so that made up for it. |
| #38sfdragonOct 09, 2009 22:09:29 | and the 2nd X-men movie had Nightcrawler in it.... |
| #39The_SilverswordOct 09, 2009 22:18:35 | Is Nightcrawler a Tiefling or what? |
| #4018DELTAOct 09, 2009 23:16:36 | No, a Mutant... |
| #41The_SilverswordOct 09, 2009 23:21:44 | What he cant be a mutant Tiefling? And did they ever finally reveal that Magneto was his daddy? I know it was hinted at for a long long time. I havnt actually read the comics in years. |
| #42LordManshoonOct 09, 2009 23:53:06 | *bashes minion's against the wall* For the love of Ao, why is this going on? This is even more off-topic than we normally get! Fine, as usual, Manshoon has to sort things out. First off: Gambit > Everyone else. End of story Now: Here's where the topic moves back on track. What have you or your DMs done with the low lore areas in your own games? And.... go team! |
| #43The_SilverswordOct 10, 2009 0:27:34 | *ouch!* Hey Pamela gave us permission to go off topic. i havnt really deviated much from what they got in the $eRealms source books. I havnt brought any gods back to life or anything, I know im boring. I just started my 4e game a few months ago and the group im with alternates DMs, and every DM uses their own system and worlds, so ive only actually run like 3 times so far, but my turns coming up again in a few weeks so i might change some stuff up, we shall see how it goes. |
| #44sfdragonOct 10, 2009 0:40:22 | uh nope, Nightcrawlers mommie is Mystique, his pappy was more a less infernal.
look it up here: marvel.com/universe/Nightcrawler |
| #45The_SilverswordOct 10, 2009 0:47:14 | Ahhh. I knew Mystique was his mommy, i was thinkin Magneto was the daddy. Im not sure where i picked that up, probably from the cartoon. And we need to shut up talkin about X-men or Lord Manshoon will smite us! |
| #4618DELTAOct 10, 2009 0:55:25 | I aint scared! |
| #47sfdragonOct 10, 2009 0:59:58 |
www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmhvxsOwhqk
I'll talk about the X-men all I want.... wolverine in the realms would be a barbarian..... |
| #4818DELTAOct 10, 2009 1:29:34 | Yeah! Instead of House of M it would be the House of Curellon! |
| #49sfdragonOct 10, 2009 2:09:55 |
with nekid halfling girls..... |
| #50The_SilverswordOct 10, 2009 5:05:17 |
LOL you and them Halflings! |
| #5118DELTAOct 10, 2009 8:05:41 | I am starting to wonder myself... |
| #52pamelaOct 10, 2009 8:47:52 |
Yo, Ao-flunky, chill! Gambit is NOT > Everyone else. Spiderman is easily > Gambit. Or used to be, before they decided to do that awful Civil War nonsense and infernal pact *mutters about kids nowadays and their lack of respect for tradition that dates back to her own childhood* Does Akanul count as low-lore? If so, I googled what I could about Chessenta and Airspur and then made up a little bit of history which ended up in the creation of one important NPC. That's really all I've done so far; I'm winging it as I go along. It's generally what I do though. |
| #53gomeztooOct 10, 2009 14:53:11 |
I imagine the Crinti still exist. I use a family (Huruafair) as background of my character (Tesh, a half-elf flavored 'half drow'). The family, being 'heretics', fled Dambrath and settled in East Rift long before the Spellplague, and allied with the dwarves there. They are one of the few Crinti houses left. They are not only half-drow (but most are): the family accepts and adopts other races as well (including drow, elves, and eladrin). You could use that family if you want to do anything in Dambrath and use a link to the former Crinti. Akanul as 'low lore'- well, there are, iirc, 2 or 3 Dragon articles on Akanul. So there is actually some stuff around. Plus anything you can get from LFR (haven't played much yet, sp i don;t know how much lore it contains). There is Lless stuff on Tymanther (the LFR adventures I have seen seem to focus on a specific region, so if you don't have access to those that would not matter much). How about Vesperin? I think there is not that much lore about the region. There was Living City (and a 'Ravens Bluff' book), but that was some time ago and iirc only details one town. I did use a Vesperin merchant (Aron Selkirk), and the Silver Ravens (an organisation now based in that region) in my adventures, but you do not necessarily have to use those. Other low lore areas (afaik) : Turmish (and the Vilhon Wilds) or Durpar (and the Beastlands). The best choice if you really don't want any lore to hunt after, however: Murghôm. It's entuirely new, and has, with its dragons, enough going on that the PCs may never have a need to leave. Gomez |
| #54sfdragonOct 10, 2009 19:52:17 | acyually I like nekid Eladrin and elven girls.....
just in one of the Entreri books they had a dwarf state with nekid female halfling dancers |
| #55suin_bahhar_02Oct 11, 2009 5:44:59 | Right.
This one as far more intriguing than any Xman. Personally I am very much interested in the new state of the Imaskari Empire. I always had a soft spot for these gods defying magocracies and I'd like to know how they would go about altering the landscape, cities and politics of their direct environment. The reemergance of the Deep Imaskari empire is also very low on the lore part so one could fill this in as they pleased.
