Hi

This is - probably the completly wrong place to ask - but - im not sure where else to go - so just point me in the right direction if so

I made a character, for some hmm.. 2-3 years ago i belive, originally for and in NeverWinter Nights - actually - i have a load of characters, aswell as i both DM, and have built for a few Persistent Worlds etc. (My first meeting with D&D and related - was Eye of the Beholder 1, and Hero's Quest 1 (the later im not really sure where originates from).

The thing is - the character i made back then, was - at best - sketchy - and i been wanting to make him more realistic in his actual build. This is not ment to be a powerbuild - but started off as a NPC, which story i found so fun, i decided to actually make a character of him. While he still is, and as NPC was - a RolePlaying based character, im a bit perfectionistic at time - and wanted him to be correct. Also in that context, as i am considerering to write - a novel, or try to - thow as english isnt my native language, god's know how that would turn out. He isnt ment as some "super-hero-uber-build drizzt goes dragon" - but i found that getting him correct with stats etc, wasnt as easy as one could guess.

Hmm.. some details - on the character "Fylxar Liamny".
Fylxar's mother - Sorfirien - Half-drow/half-red dragon Wizard was brought up among the drow, and survived her youth protected by the youngest daughter - Belerfi'ya, of a originally very powerfull house - House Weft'yln, which was brought down in the beginning of drow. The power of the house, was returned of the grandmother of Belirfi'ya - during a period of great stress and war. (I wont go into Belirfi'ya's story here - as that is a quite long - and for drow, also not a youre regular tale) - The long and short - was that Belirfi'ya seeing the future uses of a Half-drow/Half-dragon wizard allied - took Sorfirien under her wings - and later once she herself took power of her house - put Sorfirien into a equal powerfull position - they together with a third character, shapes a triangle of power, not easily beasted by any house - on the contrary.

On with the story - Sorfirien eventually became pregnant with child - the father - a Shadow Dragon. She gave birth to Fylxar - 1/4 Drow, 1/4 Red Dragon, ½ Shadow Dragon - Fylxar took another path. Fylxar - while beeing raised among the drow, eventually - under protection of his Mother - choose the path of dragons - and eventually turned Neutral (he is True Neutral) - and choose not to side with drow, but see's himself more as a dragon - then a drow. He knows they are part of his heritage, but he dont see himself as them. Influenced heavy by a golden dragon - Fylxar dont follow the path of evil - nor does he follow the path of good - but remains in between, seeking his own path.

Fylxar - reesambles a normal drow in many ways - atleast in his humanoid form - where white hair, black skin and red eyes dont reveal much of what else he is - he has however grown wings, and do use them for flying at times - thow when walking among the drow, he hides them under his cloak. At rare occations he takes on the shape of a dragon, and becomes black (shadowly), with various spots of red over his body.

In terms of personality - he would defend the drow, was they attacked, but he dont participate in theyre war's, or scheme's - by most he keeps to himself in a cave on the surface. Rumours has him coupled with a Elven lady cleric which has influenced him equally much. He is at current, roughly 180 years of age - and Wizard of class (i considered to let hem change into a arch-mage later, or some arch-mage-dragon-magic weilding something - basicly all doors are open).

Well, there it is.. im certain there is many flaws in this - and im very open for constructive critics, idea's, suggestions etc.. but, to return to the question..

What stats, and special abilities would a character as Fylxar have? What strong and weak sides would he have?

(To begin with - for 3.5 edition, but also 4.0 stats, etc would be very interesting)

I'll read your char right up in a bit, but first I gotsta ask you to change the title of your Thread. It should be An Unsuual Character. Not "A". Sorry. One of my very few english quirks. If you notice, I can't spell soo.. kinda hypocritical of me.

-Statwise, it's impossible to be 1/4 Drow, 1/4 Red Dragon, ½ Shadow Dragon. You'll have to pick either: Half-Drow, Half-Dragon (Red) or Half-Dragon (Shadow).

It's actually technically possible--take a drow and slap on the Half-Dragon (Red) and Half-Dragon (Shadow) templates. There's nothing against doing that in the rules, as it's called a "half" dragon only because it's assumed you're only taking one template and "part dragon" doesn't sound *ahem* half as cool. ;)

Sure, it'll be horribly optimized, and sure the LA is crippling, but you can do it if you want to.

-Half Dragon (Red), Half Dragon (Shadow) and Drow add up to 200% (Drow 100%, plus Half Dragon [Red] 50% and Half Dragon [Shadow] 50%)!

Quarter the Drow racial mods, quarter the half-dragon (red) racial mods, and add the half-dragon (shadow) racial mods. Round down all fractions before adding them together.

It's still a munchkin from someplace rather warm, but it can be done.

I believe halfdragon is an inherited template from a full dragon parent. Draconic is a template for dragon ancestry found in Races of the Dragon.

So, the character could start out as a half-drow with both the draconic and half-dragon templates.

Also, I believe thier is a progression in races of the dragon where a character at birth is determined to have some latent draconic ancestry. As levels and equivalent levels are acquired, first the draconic template is acquired and then it is 'upped' to half-dragon.

So, if the character has chosen to develop its dragon side that is the way to go. Once fully developed, it would have an ECL adjustment of +6 character levels and two breath weapons, etc.

-Half Dragon (Red), Half Dragon (Shadow) and Drow add up to 200% (Drow 100%, plus Half Dragon [Red] 50% and Half Dragon [Shadow] 50%)!

...but Half-Dragon doesn't literally have to be half. It's an inherited template indicating draconic ancestry, nothing more. So if one of your parents was a half-dragon and your other parent was a dragon it would work, or perhaps if your parents were sorcerers with different draconic lineages, or if they (ab)used the draconic polymorph spell one too many times.

I believe halfdragon is an inherited template from a full dragon parent. Draconic is a template for dragon ancestry found in Races of the Dragon.

I'm fairly sure (though AFB at the moment) that they denote degree of power, not closeness of ancestry. So it's conceivable that Joe Draconic Fighter had a mostly unremarkable white dragon as his mother while Joe Half-Dragon Fighter had a really freaking powerful gold dragon as his great-grandfather. The SRD doesn't say anything about closeness of heredity, so I'd have to check and see if RoD mentions it in more detail.

It's still a munchkin from someplace rather warm, but it can be done.

A Half-X-Dragon Half-Y-Dragon Drow has a +8 level adjustment. LA +8. Trust me, no "munchkin" would cripple him- or herself like that.

-Then it shouldn't be 'Half'-X, now should it? ;) :P

-Funniness aside, I have always taken it to be literally. Anything less than half, then, has been weakened enough by the blood of other things to have any benefits negligible. Like Khelben and his Elven blood, for example, who is statted as a Human.

There are a lot of naming convention issues with templates, like the Unkillable zombie (who just gets fast healing), the Yellow Musk Zombie (that's not really a zombie), the Living Wall (which is actually undead), the Fire-Souled (which is all about leadership, not fire), and so on. Not to mention the Mineral Warrior, which always makes me think of a health-conscious fighter who takes his vitamins before battle.

Well, two points. One, none of the Half-X templates ever say you're literally half--it's always "has an X in the family tree" or "is descended from X" or "is the progeny of X" or the like, which can mean anything from directly related to a few generations back. Second, there's no rule about not having multiple Half-X templates, as there would be if you were actually half. And hey, if Gilgamesh could have three parts, why can't this character? ;)

-Funny, I always thought of the creature as being made of limestone, myself.

-Well, being as that it's specifically called "Half X", I would think that it is implied that 50%+ of the individual's bloodline goes to whatever the template is. I was never the type to say since X isn't implicitly stated, it isn't necessarily true. Mace Windu is dead, for example. I don't need to see his body to know that he died.

-Are any of us worthy of being Gilgamesh? A deep philosophical question. I don't know...

I usually do too, but one player of mine made a joke about that and it's been a running gag ever since.

1) Fluff and crunch are fairly intertwined in 3e. If the designers wanted you to be half of your original race and half something else, I'm sure they would have said "You may only take one Half-X race" or the like. Heck, the "Half" Golem has only a single limb replaced, so if you replace four of your limbs with four different golem types, you could be a Half-Iron Golem Half-Stone Golem Half-Clay Golem Half-Flesh Golem Human.

2) Would you prefer something like a "Part-Dragon" template? Or the "A-Little-Bit-Dragon" template? "Somewhere-Around-A-Quarter-Dragon"? Saying you're a half dragon just sounds more impressive than "Well, my great-grandma was a dragon, so I'm a whole one-eighth of a dragon!"

-Are any of us worthy of being Gilgamesh? A deep philosophical question. I don't know...

Sure we are, as soon as we can figure out how to take an number of parents equal to a power of two and divide them into thirds. Do that, and you will achieve enlightenment. ;)

Usually when you combine racial types (elven sub-races, dragon types, etc.) you end up with something that takes on the attributes of one or the other sub-races, not both (at least in the rules). So given that the Shadow dragon is the most current and strongest blood, I would say half-drow/half-shadow dragon, with maybe some coloring from the red ancestry, or maybe the red's breath weapon instead of the shadow dragon's.

I'm not sure exactly what you're referring to here; I can't think of any rules or templates that come out to that. Would you mind jogging my memory with an example or two?

The only thing I can think of that would work is giving the Black Dragon template to a drow. If you want to expand on that 1/4 Red Dragon, you would have to take the Red Dragon Disciple prestige class. Otherwise, I would suggest it remaining dormant, like Lord Karsus suggested. I am not sure if there is really a template otherwise and what I suggested would be repetitive, ability wise. Once the Red Dragon Disciple levels are taken, you may have to work with a DM on a custom quest to make the apotheosis (spelling?) transform him into a full dragon. Which then would be a REAL pain in the butt, ECL and Level Adjustment wise. And even with that, it may have to, for the sake of avoiding the complications of making another template, mean you having that stats of black or red dragon blood. I can look through the old Dracomonicon later if you want, to see if they have rulings on this.

This is the only thing I can think of. I make weird characters, but with all due respect, this one is definitely mind-boggling, stat wise.

This is how I would handle the character. You start with Drow stats. Add the Half-Dragon (shadow) template. Then, you take Red Dragon Bloodline traits found in the Unearthed Arcana or found here---- Bloodline Traits. Your going to have to decide how strong your bloodline is by taking the Minor, Intermediate, or Major trait track. This could mean a level 1 to 3 dip. This is probably the best and most sound way of building the kind of character your looking for and your only taking +6 to 8 level adjustment. It still better than a Vampire character.

What stats, and special abilities would a character as Fylxar have? What strong and weak sides would he have?

(To begin with - for 3.5 edition, but also 4.0 stats, etc would be very interesting)

As for stats, lets take a look at what the Drow have +2 Dex, +2 Int, +2 Cha, -2 Con. You then would add in the Half-dragon stats of Str +8, Con +2, Int +2, Cha +2. So right there you would start off with a Str +8, Con +0, Int +4, Cha +4. Your type would change to Dragon as well. You would gain Natural armor +4, two claw attacks and a bite attack. In addition to the Drow's spell-like abilities you would also gain a breath weapon and some sort of immunity to a specific element (acid, fire, poison, etc...). As you gain levels, you then add the bloodline traits at the appropriate level. As for a weak side, the lack of actual PC or NPC levels really hinders you. Aside from that, besides light blindness drow receive, I don't think there are any other weaknesses.

On a side note, you could try the lesser drow version in the back of the Player's Guide to Faerun supplement to reduce the Level Adjustment and it could be easily explained because of your "mixed" heritage.

PS. This build probably couldn't be done in 4th editon. I just don't think they have the source material out yet to give it a balanced shot.
