In my game, my players recently explored the tomb of Alokkair the Lich King, a lich that took up residence under the Fox Hill of Shadowdale several hundred years ago.  Along with some official items, I created the following homebrew items for the PCs to find...

--Bone Ring of Necromancy (hollowed out ring of bone) -- [Property: Powers with the necrotic keyword do an additional +2 damage. /// Daily: Animate Dead as per the 9th level Wizard power; special: requires corpse.]

--Bloodied Onyx (onyx gem soaked in blood and enchanted) -- [Power (Consumable * Necrotic): Free action. Use this power when casting Animate Dead. The undead creature you animate gains regeneration 5.]

--Palantír (This clear crystal orb flickers with the hazy images of distant people and places) - [Property: When you use this crystal ball as a focus for a scrying ritual, gain a +5 item bonus to Arcana checks made during that ritual. The arcane reagent cost of the ritual is halved, and the casting time is reduced to 1 minute. /// History DC 30: Objects like these were used in the ancient Netherese Empire as a means for Archwizards from different floating cities to communicate with one another.]

--Decahedron Ioun Stone (red stone, slowly orbits around head) - [Property: Sustains the user without water indefinitely /// Power (Daily): immediate interrupt, use this power when you are hit with poison damage - gain resist 10 poison until the end of your next turn.]

--Two full length (128 page) volumes, each containing one ritual. The rituals--Velsharoon's Death Fleet and Ioulaum's Weave Mythal-- appear immensely powerful. (See this thread.)

Nice! Ive got an old Necromancer character that I used to play back in the days of 2e. Ive been thinking of updating him to 4e as a villan for my current pcs. I could definitely see him using some of these. Especialy the Bloodied Onyx, that could come in handy, Bwahahaha!

Sweet, I'm glad you can put them to use.

I feel like the Necromancer is one of the few old classes that has no support from Wizards... there are a handful of necromantic powers, but not enough to run a PC necromancer.  The Lich Ascendent PP and the Arch-Lich ED are sweet though, and the few necro powers that exist are nice, there just needs to be a few more for the class to be playable as a PC.  Compare this to the illusionist -- there are quite clearly enough illusion powers to run a PC illusionist.

This is brilliant! I don't suppose there are some 4e stats for Alokkair at all as well please???

Yes I agree, I'd like to see the Lich Kings stats as well.

And Im guessing that WotC will do a Necromancer class with the release of PHB4 and the Shadow power source, at least I hope so.

To be honest, in my campaign Alokkair was the standard level 14 elite controller 'Lich (human wizard)'  found in the Monster Manual.

However, if you want to take a look at his lair (partially my creation, partially an adaptation from a 3.5 sourcebook), check this out:

I believe you have to sign up for the site (its quick and free) in order to see the images, though I could be wrong.

BTW, this is my campaign's website... the main forum is here:

Here is a link to a homebrew Necromancer class. Though there is a better one with a full PDF format and additionl support. When I get home I'll post the info on where I got it. The pdf I got is actually really balanced and treats the Necromancer as a controller with either striker as a second role or leader as a second roll and they animate/summon all sorts of undead stuff.

nice.  I wonder how similar the official necromancer is going to be when the phb4 comes out (I certainly hope the phb4 has the necromancer...)

Oh I definitly hope so. I'm hoping that the Player's Handbook 4 has at least 3 more Shadow based classes: Hexknight (Defender), Necromancer (Controller), and some sort of leader. I don't know what sort of class might be a leader (hells, even the Necromancer could be a leader).

As long as just about all of his dailies involve summoning the undead, and as long as he's got a couple of necro specific rituals, I will be very happy :-)
