A breif conflict between Cormyr and the elves ensued in the Year of Deaths Unmourned (1394 DR), but King Avoun V soon turned his full attention to more pressing threats from neighboring Netheril and Sembia.

The Hullack stradles the border with Sembia, and was never really 'controlled' by either nation overmuch (although Cormyr did claim it). I do find it a bit strange for them to be there, but there is a pretty cool way to spin it, if you don't mind Cormyr being a little 'darker' then it is normally presented. Cormyr - the land itself - still technically belongs to the Elves (read Cormyr: A Novel), and in the past the Elves would 'check up on' the humans to see if they were properly taking care of "their lands". The Cormites - and Obarskyrs in particular - are merely 'caretakers' of the land until such a time as when the Elven Court deems it necessary to re-exert their ancient claim on the forest Kingdom ('Cormyr' is even an Elven term). Thats all canon... Now the fun part; what if the Eldruth Veluthra knew of this, and appraoched the royals with these ancient claims? Perhaps a deal was struck, where the Eldruth Veluthra were secretly granted the forest, in exchange for them concentrating 'their efforts' to the north and east. It doesn't place Cormyr in an especially 'good' light, but I could see it happening, and would prove mutually beneficial to both groups... of course, the EV 'higher-ups' wouldn't let most of the group know that they struck a deal like that with 'lowly humans'. Just as Cormyr would not have made any official proclamation in regards to the matter. The leadership of both would simply direct their fighters and woodsmen elsewhere, with no explanation required. Thats how I would spin it, at any rate. I really don't see the relatively small EV surviving for long if Cormyr made any real effort to out them, and if the EV can be used against Sembia and the Shades, so much the better. There have been 'dirtier deals' made in the RW. ;)

Hullack was never really under any sort of firm control and didn't have any human population from what I can remember. Now, I don't think they'd go around announcing that they let of piece of the kingdom go, but it's not terribly damning in a way, either. Much moreso for EV "sullying" themselves and dealing with humans, especially for something that is "there's by right."
#8 Stigger Jan 02, 2009 3:13:35	Think of it as getting the EV to fight a proxy conflict for the Crown of Cormyr against former enemies they have an uneasy truce with, and it gets much dirtier... while your subjects might not object, the former enemy you're supposedly at peace with probably will. ;)
#9 colman Jan 02, 2009 3:24:24	I'd read the EV claims over the Hullack as being pretty tenuous: they're just not numerically strong enough to hold it. You're talking murders of foresters and raids on weaker caravans rather than an impassable kingdom. Just another set of raiders like orcs or whatever. Cormyr hasn't been too bothered because they've had more important things to tend to: the East Way is still open, if somewhat more dangerous than before.

#12 markustay63 Jan 02, 2009 7:20:55	Thanks. The 'dirty' part for Cormyr comes in when you consider the EV hate humans. Thats like Israel making a deal with Al-Queda. Neither side would be proud of something like that, and they'd be more then willing to 'cover-up' the fact any deal was struck. It all falls under the heading of "politics makes stange bedfellows', or perhaps "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" (or at least temporary ally). Cormyr would be using the EV much the same way the British Empre used the pirates, and the EV would be able to have the protection of the Hullack Forest to run back to after any shinnanigans. Anyone chasing the EV back into the Hullack would violating Cormyr's border. Thats sort of how certain groups of Vietcong were operating out of Thailand and other regions - the US Gov't couldn't chase them into another sovereign nation without creating more problems (although I'm sure it did happen from time to time). It still happens today much the same way all over he Middle-East. The Gov't involved - in this case Cormyr - literally turns a blind eye to terrorists operating out of it's borders. That certainly doesn't paint Cormyr in a very good light at all, but war is a dirty thing... especially a covert one. (Starting to picture the Cormyr/Sembia stuff being much like the RW Coldwar here).

#14 lord_karsus Jan 03, 2009 23:22:39	-The Eldreth Veluuthra was active in Loudwater as well, which is in the neighborhood. Herianame [Sunstar] of Evermeet was the local Eldreth Veluuthra "organizer" in Evereska, as well.
