in 3e, both Elminster and Kelben Blackstaff were archmages, and in 4e, Elminster probably has the Chosen ED

Wrong. Elminster is an NPC and no longer has class levels (though he can have a template). Also, Mystra is dead, so Eliminster is no longer a Chosen of Mystra.

So while he is a powerful "wizard", now he's more a stat block with arcana and the ritual caster feat.

Currently there are no more Prestige classes in FR. 4e calls levels 11-20 "paragon tier", and you pick a "paragon path", which is effectively a prestige class. It's not an option, though, you have to pick one.

In 3e, though, KainHighwind is correct. Elminster, as well as a slew of other NPCs, used prestige classes. Also many monsters picked them up as well.

-This thread belongs in the Running the Realms section. I'll make sure it's moved.

-I'm not sure it it exists anymore, but I know someone at Candlekeep was scouring the 3e books, to compile a listing of NPCs. Included in the list would be classes.

ummm...

All the Red Wizards. All the Hathrans. Many Harpers. Shadow Thieves of Amn. The Order of Magisters and Protectors. Purple Dragon Knights, War Wizards of Cormyr. etc.

Lots of PrCs are Realms PrCs.

And ninja was a 3.5 base class, not PrC.

-In Oriental Adventures, it was a PrC. Honestly, I don't know if I like the Ninja as a base class, or a PrC better.

Sorry for the off-topic post, btu theoretically, couldn't you start as a ninja then PrC into ninja???

Also, the Exalted pic wasn't THAT bad to me, then again I'm a big anime nerd...

-In theory, though I don't know if the Ninja base class provided the necessary skills/feats/abilities to take the Ninja PrC, from OA.

Let me see ... out of my head ... Quenthel Baenre, Gromph Baenre, Pharaun Mizzrym, every single one of the Patron Fathers of the Jaezred Chaulssin, one Artemis Entreri, Danifae Yauntyrr, Fox-at-Twilight too ... yes, there are some.

I believe you do have another option - you can get lower-level abilities of another class, kinda like multiclassing.

Anyway, iirc the North (and I guess the Great rift) had several notable dwarven defenders, many higher-level mages were archmagi, Red wizards abounded... is there any particular PrC the OP is asking for?

Not wanting to start a discussion, but these paragon tiers "prestige classes" give you what, up to 6 specials ("extras" / "exploits" / "spells" whatever) over the course of 10 levels? It would have made a very poor prestige class if designed for 3,xE, IMHO.

and there were two ninja prcs, the ninja spy out of QA and the Ninja of the Crescent Moon out of sword and fist or song and silence.

both kinda sucked

that's like saying that the nVidia Quadro FX sucks because it can't play games.

Totally different design philosophies went in to Prestige Classes and Paragon Paths.

-The base class is in Complete Adventurer. Ninjas- as in the profession, and not necessarily the base class/PrC- would be found in Kara-Tur, and parts of eastern Faerûn.

Well, the second was a bit too overpowered at least as far as non-casters go. Full BAB, 5d6 sa, monk abilities, and other goodies... not bad at all.

Anyway, back to NPCs and prestige classes, I believe several dragons in Tiamat's service have levels in that PrC that could make them immortal... Dragon Ascendant, I believe.

This assassin lass in the Lady Penitent III novel was a Complete Adventurer "ninja". That was the class though.

Why wouldn't any of you guys just send him Kuje's 3e NPC file so that he can look at it for himself... ;)

-I already told creyzi to go to Candlekeep and check Kuje's NPC files.
