Any other non-US dwellers import the FRPG?

Sep 15, 2008 18:46:24 After noting the, frankly ridiculous, difference in publishing date between the US and the British isles I arranged with a friend to have it mailed to me on the day of release from the states.

Why?

Because having my friend buy it, box it, ship and (by conventional airmail) and waiting for the Royal Mail to deliver it... will still be faster than waiting for the proper release date in this country.

Anyone else attempting something similar or am I the only (non-US) loon in these here parts?

-No, in a previous post on a similar issue in the past, most people in other countries seemed to agree that it was easier/better to import the original stuff, rather than wait for it to be imported/translated/etc.

Sep 16, 2008 2:02:28 In Germany you get the english stuff on the same street date it's released in the US. One might import anyway to save cash with the strong ⁈, but doing it to save time doesn't really work.

Sep 16, 2008 3:25:09 I'm not convinced that there's a difference in official release dates, but there are apparently quite a lot of US companies that ship the product as soon as they get it. That's often some time before the official release date. There are European ones who do the same, but they tend to get stock a bit later and therefore it doesn't ship as soon. At my LGS they don't put new stock out until the official release date, and it's usually later than that simply because Esdevium (the distributor) doesn't put it on their schedules until they have it. If you're determined to get things as early as possible you may save some time by getting it from America, provided it's from someone in America who'll release early. I don't think it's going to be much earlier though.

Sep 16, 2008 3:35:57 I am not a fan of buying things the same date they are released, but here in Spain, as a general rule, books go out about the same dates as the US, maybe a week later, in English. We have to wait from two to six months for the translated versions but, honestly, who needs that crap? Translations are usually awful.

Sep 16, 2008 4:33:42 Bought the PDF versions (I like having them on the laptop so I can work on stuff in downtime without packing 100kg of books!) while I wait for the paper versions of the key books.

Sep 16, 2008 15:12:38 I live in Canada & got both the FRPG & Adventurer's Vault a week early through an online pre-order, so I really can't complain about release dates. But that's a pretty good idea, getting a friend who lives somewhere in North America to simply mail you a copy. Does it wind up costing you a lot more that way?

It doesn't seem to. First he pre-ordered it so he got it for a lower price than the RRP. And then there is the dollar->pound exchange rate which makes it cheaper still. So all in all I would say that even with shipping the price is comparable... and I still get it 6 days before it is officially out here .

Though I think I'll cancel Adventurer's Vault - don't need a paper version of most of that!

I love the weak dollar! Once upon a time during Clinton it was about 8 NOK (Norwegian Crowns); ever since Bush took over, I've been able to buy stuff cheaper from the U.S. of A!
