#2 suin_bahhar_02 Nov 05, 2009 8:47:52	The best resource for Archdevils politics can be found in the 3.5 tome Fiendish Codex: Tyrants of the Nine Hells. In FR the most active archdevils have been Grazz't and Asmodeus, as the latter even managed to reach divine status within Torils sphere by eating Azuth a diety of magic; the former took captive the diety Waukeen for a few years.

Both the Manual of the Planes (3rd edition) and Fiendish Codex: Tyrants of the Nine Hells provide good explanations on the Lords of the Nine and on the other powerful Archdevils in Baator.  EDIT: Most arch-devils are not really deities, qualifying, at most, as Exarchs. In the Forgotten Realms only Asmodeus achieved divine status by stealling the essence from Azuth during the Spellplague. There are some cults however that can worship arch-devils as deities (even gaining spells, in 3rd edition at least).

Based on what I've read, hasn't Grazz't resided in the Abyss for eons? After serving as Asmo's vanguard into the Abyss, he became corrupted by the chaos and turned his back on Asmo (to all appearances). He rules over the Threefold Realm, and concerns himself more with Demogorgon and Orcus then the wrath of Asmodeus. That's what I've always seen with regards to Grazz't; what sourcebook(s) say(s) he dwells in the Hells and consorts with his former kin?

#7 suin_bahhar_02 Nov 05, 2009 13:18:39	So yes, there are differing stories about Graz'zt origin; one tells of him being a devil general for Asmodeus and the other of him being the son of the obyrith Pale Night, a chaotic evil race predating the gods and some mysterious other entity.   LK has made a thread of all active named devils and archdevils in FR sourcebooks and novels here. I particularly am fond of the fallen solar of Corellon Malkizid, the fallen archons Mephistopheles and Dispater. Keveras has made all the stats you might be needing and then some here.

The 4e core Grazzt was massively retconned into being a devil living in the Abyss or somesuch, where previously he was always a demon, and in fact the child of the Obyrith lord Pale Night the mother of demons. Actually the entirety of planar material was changed/retconned massively in 4e. How this conflicts with established lore in FR all over the place is something to deal with if you use the 4e material.

Yes that was my recollection as well - Iggwilv summoned Graz'zt and they got busy and made Iuz, and then Graz'zt was imprisoned beneath Castle Greyhawk but released by one of the original maker's characters, which I can't remember now. Fraz'urb'luu was also imprisoned there but that's kinda off topic as these are demon princes anyways.
