| #1merrikcaleMay 19, 2008 18:48:08 | Someone tell me this a joke. They can't be serious. One FR page. Either its a joke, or they relaize the 4th edition FR book will bomb. It must be one or the other, right? |
| #2JudgeDookieMay 19, 2008 18:51:52 | I pray to Bejebuz that it goes away, my man. You can barely find anything. When you do it is at least three posts gone from when you last checked it and it constantly times out. And, as it has been stated, I am already seeing a clash on things. There needs to be some segregation. You know, give Karsus his own potty to pee in and such. ;) |
| #3rinonalyrna_fathomlinMay 19, 2008 18:52:14 | I'm worried this page is going to get chaotic. Although who knows, maybe my fears will be unfounded. |
| #4StiggerMay 19, 2008 18:52:40 | My wife has a theory that they need to get rid of the 'old timer' gamers to attract in the new players, since some marketting suit thinks we're a bunch of weirdos who live in basements that'll scare the noobs off if they get a good look at us. Not really sure if she was serious about that, or just venting, but it made for a nervous laugh around the gaming table... |
| #5the_ubbergeekMay 19, 2008 18:54:11 | They're working around, obviously.... We could have got worse - the speed and dedication of Montreal's blue collars. Wished that they took a time offline and take really the time to rearrange more.... |
| #6merrikcaleMay 19, 2008 18:56:22 | My wife has a theory that they need to get rid of the 'old timer' gamers to attract in the new players, since some marketting suit thinks we're a bunch of weirdos who live in basements that'll scare the noobs off if they get a good look at us. Not really sure if she was serious about that, or just venting, but it made for a nervous laugh around the gaming table... which is in the basment right? |
| #7OmoikaneMay 19, 2008 18:57:26 | Or maybe they're just opening one FR forum for now.. expanding it when the book actually gets published. Well, we can hope. |
| #8the_ubbergeekMay 19, 2008 18:58:48 | Considering that no new material is out there, it's a point. Note that the Eberron side of things is in the same situation. No specialness. |
| #9StiggerMay 19, 2008 18:59:44 | Nope, middle of the living room. :P |
| #10JudgeDookieMay 19, 2008 19:00:50 | Or maybe they're just opening one FR forum for now.. expanding it when the book actually gets published. Well, we can hope. It won't last to the book. i just had 5 posts--and maybe one --EDIT 2-- being posted as I type this--ahead of me just in the last 5 minutes. As Rinonalyrna Fathomlin said, it is getting chaotic. It's going to wear us all thin unless it is split. Besides, the forums were supposed to be "reorganized," not consolidated. |
| #11the_ubbergeekMay 19, 2008 19:09:59 | Ten on 'new' subsections when they will find a good way to seperate the subjects the best manner possible. |
| #12JudgeDookieMay 19, 2008 19:14:50 | Ten on 'new' subsections when they will find a good way to seperate the subjects the best manner possible. Trust me--assuming you were making a statement and not a question--it could have been done without forcing everyone into a bottleneck first. |
| #13meldreadMay 19, 2008 19:19:29 | I hate this. |
| #14the_ubbergeekMay 19, 2008 19:19:52 | Trust me--assuming you were making a statement and not a question--it could have been done without forcing everyone into a bottleneck first. Depend on how limited are their human ressources and time - there is moderation to do everyday and other common duties that are not awaiting. And other subsections, along saving things. Again, I will point that the other and 'pet' setting is in the same situation... They are still debating on how to organise stuff at the end. |
| #15samothrakeMay 19, 2008 19:25:20 | Besides, the forums were supposed to be "reorganized," not consolidated. But didn't you know? Consolidation is a form of reorgization! *ducks* |
| #16merrikcaleMay 19, 2008 19:32:44 | I hate this. I hate them |
| #17JudgeDookieMay 19, 2008 19:44:05 | Depend on how limited are their human ressources and time - there is moderation to do everyday and other common duties that are not awaiting. And other subsections, along saving things. I work in IT and there is no way I would do this. You don't debate how to organize after the fact. They know the number of members; they know the traffic. They even asked for a discussion by us on the subject of how to "reorganize" things. So, at the moment, this seems to be a monumental up.Now, granted, there may be something that prevented a complete dissection, but unless we see things resolved by tomorrow night, I can only see this as something short-sighted. Either that, or they really are trying to weed out these "legacy" players. But didn't you know? Consolidation is a form of reorgization! (swing) Think you're quick, huh? I'm pullin' out my burrito now. You gonna get it, bubby! ![]() EDIT - They already dropped the FR General, so their is hope.... |

| #40DiffanMay 20, 2008 1:38:14 | Though I'm usually open minded when it comes to change, grouping all of this together isn't my idea of effective. To me it seems as though they're just throwing it all together with nonchalance so they can work on other "more important" things instead of taking the time and thought to work out categories individually. Was the old system really that hard? Would it not have been more effective just to add the 4e FR stuff in to say.......the FR boards? *sigh* |
| #41Shemeska_the_MarauderMay 20, 2008 1:43:02 | This is well past the point of being a case study in how to poorly run an online forum. One catch-all forum for FR... ![]() |
| #42Mr_MiscellanyMay 20, 2008 1:55:51 | If it puts more focus on running the Realms (regardless of what edition is being used) and not just talking about it in an out-of-game context...well then I'm for it. ::::::::::::: Maybe they're just consolidating based on a lack of moderators or budget to pay the moderators? Just guessing here....no facts to back up such suposition. |
| #43gomeztooMay 20, 2008 2:16:52 | It seems they might want to focus not too much on the Realms on these boards. Considering they won't be releasing a massive amount of Realms books (as opposed to the ones in 2nd/3rd ed), that is probably not that strange. In addition, the RPGA will pay attention to the Forgotten Realms, and hopefully it will offer a community for that, too. Personally I think a setting might benefit from a slightly bigger setup than merely one forum page, though the old Realms boards seemed a bit overkill to me. |
| #44zananMay 20, 2008 2:29:22 | Well, it has been coming for weeks now - and Lord Karsus* told us about it early enough (though I wonder how his stone head down there in the swamp can see anything beyond the moskitos and lizards). It has that "minced" feel about it. That said, I actually checked the FR boards this week for new or updated threads and those arguing for just one great FR board had a point when saying that there are not as many new posts per day or even week that may warrant four to six seperate ones. This is, I may stress, just an observation and once the FRCS 4E is out, tons of new threads will spring up on a daily basis, I would assume. I take it as a period of testing and if we keep banging on the door loud enough, they may give a couple or so more boards to the individual settings. *See, I left the "..." this time around ;) |
| #45rinonalyrna_fathomlinMay 20, 2008 8:34:36 | Though I'm usually open minded when it comes to change, grouping all of this together isn't my idea of effective. Was the old system really that hard? Would it not have been more effective just to add the 4e FR stuff in to say.......the FR boards? *sigh* I was thinking the same thing. Granted, some of the old boards didn't seem to get much traffic (like "Combat, Arms, and Armor"), so some consolidation probably isn't a bad idea. As of right now, though, this does feel cramped, and I'm worried that it'll get overcrowded. I hope my fears will turn out to be unfounded. |
| #46rinonalyrna_fathomlinMay 20, 2008 8:36:35 | If it puts more focus on running the Realms (regardless of what edition is being used) and not just talking about it in an out-of-game context...well then I'm for it. So, people should only use these forums the way you personally like to use them. Nothing new there. Anyway, I don't see how a general forum would put more focus on anything...that seems rather contradictory to me. |
| #47rinonalyrna_fathomlinMay 20, 2008 8:38:39 | This is, I may stress, just an observation and once the FRCS 4E is out, tons of new threads will spring up on a daily basis, I would assume. Yes! One more forum for Realms product discussion might be a good idea at that point. |
| #48lord_karsusMay 20, 2008 10:24:39 | If it puts more focus on running the Realms (regardless of what edition is being used) and not just talking about it in an out-of-game context...well then I'm for it. -And then you have mush-mosh: "In my Realms, Myth Drannor has been saved!" "Yeah, in my Realms, Myth Drannor was fully destroyed." "Pfft. In my Realms, Myth Drannor was replaced by a city of aliens from Aldoc III..." -And, what editorial value lies within that? That said, I actually checked the FR boards this week for new or updated threads and those arguing for just one great FR board had a point when saying that there are not as many new posts per day or even week that may warrant four to six seperate ones. This is, I may stress, just an observation and once the FRCS 4E is out, tons of new threads will spring up on a daily basis, I would assume. -As many have brought up, there hasn't been a Forgotten Realms product released in months, so obviously, chatter is going to slow a little. And, with a whole new setting is being released in a few months, things are going to get 'hot' again soon, so to speak. I wanted to post a thread about modifying the EoF Bladesinger, but I'm not going to, as it will simply get trapped somewhere in the Abyss of the third page. -I had not problem condensing things into, say, three different sections: "Races and Place", "Magic and Magic Items", and "General", or something to that effect. But, one giant, all-encompassing section is just a little too much. *See, I left the "..." this time around ;) -Yes, I see. Thank you. |
| #49merrikcaleMay 20, 2008 18:53:59 | This is well past the point of being a case study in how to poorly run an online forum. One catch-all forum for FR... Its an embarrassment. |
| #50Mr_MiscellanyMay 20, 2008 21:53:01 | -And, what editorial value lies within that? :heehee Editorial value? If we assume you mean "value to Realms Dungeon Masters" then I can say with some confidence such would have great value to RDM's, especially if those statements spawn ongoing online conversations and the sharing of campaign ideas. You kind of have to have experience as a DM first in order to understand the value of variety. That's where good ideas come from. ![]() ![]() |
| #51lord_karsusMay 20, 2008 22:10:09 | Editorial value? | #53StiggerMay 21, 2008 6:24:52 | C'mon LK, Misc takes shots at pretty much anyone when the mood takes him, why should any of us be immune? Even suggesting someone should be is sure to make them a target. Or maybe that's just what I would do when someone said that to me... but I can be a prick at times, so... take it for what you will. ;) As to the rest, I could care less what someone else is doing in their campaign to be honest, at least in-depth. Occassional snippets one picks up here and there, sure, I can and have gone with that, but I really don't want to sit and read some exposition on a campaign since there's not much to do beyond giving a compliment or calling the poster an idiot you don't agree with. Better to just avoid stuff like that and not even run the temptation to flame as far as I'm concerned. |

| #57lord_karsusMay 21, 2008 10:24:00 | it's nothing personal, LK doesn't bath or shower. -Me and JD have been through this. I usually take two showers per day. However cluttered, these boards are superior to all others concerning the Forgotten Realms (right now) anyway, so...Not much of an upgrade, if any, by leaving. |

The people there are angry, but I think they are probably better off with the new format. |
| #64Mr_MiscellanyMay 22, 2008 0:31:34 | -Of course, these are the catch-all Forgotten Realms forums, not the "What's a DM to Do?" forums, or the "Forgotten Realms DM" forums. These forums are primarily to discuss the Forgotten Realms. If such discussions come up, they are "dealt" with. But, advice for DMs isn't this section's primary focus. Wait. You define them as the 'catch-all' forums, but then assign Realms Gaming to an imaginary lesser status within that structure? ![]() You see, that doesn't comport with the well known fact that Realms DMs deal with unique issues (i.e. player vs. DM lore knowledge, to name just one) that don't come up in non-Realms games. The depth of the setting can be daunting to DMs, as well as inviting. People come here to discuss those issues. Exactly how is Realms campaign discussion not discussing the Realms? -I've been DMing a campaign weekly and bi-weekly for the past two years or so. Congratulations. You'll become a better Realms DM with every game you run. That said, experience has no impact on the quality of a D&D campaign ... This statement is so generalist and innacurate that it has no discussion value. At all. More experienced DMs run better campaigns. ...as there are great DMs who have been DMing for a short time, and there are bad DMs that have been playing for a long time. 'Great' and 'bad' are highly subjective statements that make it easy to pretend there's no actual value in gaming with a DM that's been playing for a long time. Wrapping them up into that generalist sentence only served to re-affirm your statement's lack of truth value. Nor is it relevant to the statements that were made. Your claim was (in so many words) that chatter about various people's campaigns has no value. That's simply wrong. To illustrate that point, I made the observation (and rightly so, based your after-the-fact statement of limited experience) that experienced DMs know the value of variety. To expand on that point: DMs with experience know that good ideas are hard to find. They know these ideas can come from anywhere. Experienced DMs know that good, solid campaign discussion is a gold mine for good ideas about gaming in the Realms. |

| #66StiggerMay 22, 2008 0:51:24 | Seems just as disingenuous to suggest that competance can only come with 'time served' rather than innate talent for telling a story that people find compelling. Time helps, but its not requisite for a decent DM, nor is time an indicator that one is actually good at it. Ultimately, its too subjective a topic to come to any meaningful statements worth discussing in the first place, beyond saying that we've all met our share of good and bad ones. |
| #67lord_karsusMay 22, 2008 1:05:36 | Wait. -Yes. Again, what editorial value does a response of "In my Realms...XYZ", when someone is asking for a concrete, by canon answer? None. If someone asks for opinions, ideas, and so on, they are given opinions, ideas, and so on. That is not the primary focus of this section, however. If it were, these would be the Forgotten Realms DM threads. And, they are not, nor were they ever. Realms DMs deal with unique issues (i.e. player vs. DM lore knowledge, to name just one) that don't come up in non-Realms games. The depth of the setting can be daunting to DMs, as well as inviting. -These issues are present in any and every campaign setting, published and/or homebrew. They are hardly unique to the Forgotten Realms. People come here to discuss those issues. Or at least they should. -Realize how, for the most part, they don't? Telling. -People come here to discuss the Forgotten Realms as a world. This is why threads such as 'The Philosophies of the Realms', 'Elven Military Tactics During The Crown Wars', 'Who Is The Most Ancient Living Sorcerer On Faerûn?', 'What Is "Abeir"?', pop up, while, it is rare for a question pertaining to DMing specifically to pop up. Exactly how is Realms campaign discussion not discussing the Realms? -See above. Little-to-no 'editorial' value when discussions don't specificially ask for the opinions of other Forgotten Realms DMs. And, they rarely do. This statement is so generalist and innacurate that it has no discussion value. -Be that as it may in your opinion, it's entirely and fully correct. More experienced DMs run better campaigns. -Incorrect. The DM I usually play with has been playing Dungeons and Dragons since the 70s, on and off, and he is not a very good DM. A player who I play with, who sometimes DMs Star Wars, has been playing since the 70s, is not a very good DM. A older cousin of mine, who played D&D while in college, ran a campaign for a few months before he moved away from the area. Probably the best DM I have ever had. There goes your hypothesis. Great' and 'bad' are highly subjective statements that make it easy to pretend there's no actual value in gaming with a DM that's been playing for a long time. -Indeed, they are subjective. That said, 'time' and 'experience' have no bearing on the abilities of a DM to run a successful campaign. Would you call a DM who has been running games since the advent of D&D, who continually uses DMPCs to steal the glory from the party, and barely knows the ruleset he/she is using a good DM? Likewise, would you call a DM who just opened the books, and yet is running a campaign that enthralls his/her players a bad DM? Your claim was (in so many words) that chatter about various people's campaigns has no value. -When someone is asking about what happened to Coronal Ynoleth's Bracers, they want to hear what an official Forgotten Realms sourcebooks says, not "Well, in my campaign, I changed thing such that Coronal Ynoleth never even had a set of bracers!". How does that solve the OP's query? It doesn't. The OP is now informed of what that person did, but he is still looking for information about the whereabouts of Coronal Ynoleth's Bracers. Every reply begins off with, "Well, in my campaign...". In the end, upon the review, the OP still does not know where Coronal Ynoleth's Bracers are. He knows what Sal did with Coronal Ynoleth's Bracers. Does that help him? No. He knows what Judy did with Coronal Ynoleth's Bracers. Does that help him? No. He knows what Mike did with Coronal Ynoleth's Bracers. Does that help him? No. He knows that Jacklyn did with Coronal Ynoleth's Bracers. Does that help him? No. -For the most part, the only time someone mentioning what happened in their campaigns is of value is when they are asked. As stated above, it is fairly rare that someone comes with questions specificially pertaining to others' campaigns. As Stigger said, "As to the rest, I could care less what someone else is doing in their campaign to be honest, at least in-depth. Occassional snippets one picks up here and there, sure, I can and have gone with that, but I really don't want to sit and read some exposition on a campaign since there's not much to do beyond giving a compliment or calling the poster an idiot you don't agree with. Better to just avoid stuff like that and not even run the temptation to flame as far as I'm concerned.". That's simply wrong. To illustrate that point, I made the observation (and rightly so, based your after-the-fact statement of limited experience) that experienced DMs know the value of variety. -Not all of that is true. That said, this changes nothing: 'Experience' has no bearing on a DMs ability to perform as what is commonly accepted as a 'good' DM. Just like 'experience' has no bearing on the ability of a person to perform as what is commonly accepted as a 'good' player/PC. -Being as that you were the one who gained the negative attention of WizO Whoever It Was, I fail to see how that is a laughing matter, especially in light of what was done. |
| #68Mr_MiscellanyMay 22, 2008 1:16:16 | Seems just as disingenuous to suggest that competance can only come with 'time served' rather than innate talent for telling a story that people find compelling. Holy where-did-I-suggest-that Batman!?!? That's right....I didn't suggest it. I claimed that DMs with more experience are:
I concluded from this that it makes no sense to suggest that multiple people discussing the same or similar topics about their Realms Campaigns on this forum will detract from its value. Time helps, but its not requisite for a decent DM, nor is time an indicator that one is actually good at it. Based on my considerable experience, DMs who can keep campaigns running for more than a couple years or otherwise can start fresh with new people every couple of years and still provide an enjoyable experience are good DMs. You don't get that with new DMs. Enthusiasm for play is the only factor I've ever seen that can elevate an otherwise inexperienced Realms Dungeon Master to a respectable level. Ultimately, its too subjective a topic to come to any meaningful statements worth discussing in the first place, beyond saying that we've all met our share of good and bad ones. To the extent that it relates to the value of what Realms DMs could (and should be able to) share with each other on this forum about their ideas of what the Realms is and how to build on those ideas for great gaming experiences? No, it's not too subjective a topic at all. :::::::::::::: Being on the FR forums isn't so much about running into the occassional strawman as it is about winding your way through endless rolling fields fields of them. |
| #69lord_karsusMay 22, 2008 1:19:09 | -That said, I am no longer going to duke it our with you, Misc, as you really aren't worth it. Choice comments, I'll have responses to, sparingly, of course, but I'm not even going to bother anymore. I don't like you, I don't really care how you feel about me- though, experience tells me that the dislike is mutual between each other- and that's that. |
| #70Mr_MiscellanyMay 22, 2008 1:33:18 | -When someone is asking about what happened to Coronal Ynoleth's Bracers, they want to hear what an official Forgotten Realms sourcebooks says, not "Well, in my campaign, I changed thing such that Coronal Ynoleth never even had a set of bracers!". That, my dear lad, is your assumption. One for which I’m afraid you’re guilty of being most incorrect. To be fair, the second type of answer isn’t one I’d be looking for if I were the OP, because it’s not creative and lacks value. What I would expect (and what you used to be able to get on the Realms-L list in its heyday) was a lore-based answer, or an answer that built off the lore and took it into another direction. Thus, whereas someone like you would only ever give the canned lore answer, I would give (and hope to get) an answer that expands on the lore of Ynoleth’s bracers with some creative addition by the DM/person giving the answer. You see, that’s how Realmslore grows beyond what’s in the books. Good Realms Dungeon Masters appreciate that anything anyone puts forth about their game isn’t a deviation from canon lore, but instead an addition to it. How does that solve the OP's query? Why would you assume that people who share what they do in their campaigns are ignorant of the answer, or that they wouldn’t share it if they knew what the answer was, or that they don’t know the answer and haven’t built something interesting from it? -For the most part, the only time someone mentioning what happened in their campaigns is of value is when they are asked. So you admit people sharing information about their campaign is of value? Rarity of statements doesn’t detract from their value, it seems. What does that do to the rest of your argument. ;) |
| #71StiggerMay 22, 2008 3:26:13 | Holy where-did-I-suggest-that Batman!?!? Looks like you just suggested it again to me... experience is equatable with time served, since you don't actually get any experience without time spent doing it, and the whole 'simply better DMs' comment pretty much cements that the conclusion I made was fairly valid. You're building a presumed learning curve into your equation that isn't going to always be there. There's a definite suggestion there that if you spend X years being a DM, then you've gained experience and will therefore be a good DM. Obviously that won't always, or even often, be the case. Hells, it could just mean that your players just don't know any better to realize that you're really crap at it. There are tons of reasons why that isn't always going to be the case... Based on my considerable experience, DMs who can keep campaigns running for more than a couple years or otherwise can start fresh with new people every couple of years and still provide an enjoyable experience are good DMs. Guess I'm doing pretty well with a steady group of players and a 6 or 7 year generational campaign then, by that token. As to your definition there, I very much agree with it, but my own experience says that you need innate storytelling ability more than experience. What you're defining up there aren't qualities of a good DM, simply hallmarks of them. Length of the campaign isn't nearly as important as the quality of it I've found, such as one of my players who can't keep a story running more than a month (1-2 sessions per week for us usually), but who is absolutely fantastic at short-term story arcs. Very good DM in certain conditions, abyssmal under others, and she's been playing a whole lot longer than I have. As to the rest... what constitutes a respectable level of competancy in a DM? The judgement is entirely subjective, and largely conditional on prior experiences of the person judging it. Is it the ability to tell a gripping story? Mechanical proficiency? The ability to diffuse player conflicts without ruffling feathers? Adept handling of problem players so that they disrupt the game minimally? All of the above, or some combination thereof? Just way too nebulous. To the extent that it relates to the value of what Realms DMs could (and should be able to) share with each other on this forum about their ideas of what the Realms is and how to build on those ideas for great gaming experiences? Nothing is stopping, or really has ever stopped people from using the Realm's boards in that way. Not like there's a warning that pops up on the screen featuring a huge picture of the forum regulars glowering at Realm's DMs telling them to keep their campaigns to themselves or else... although I'd be highly amused if one did, just on principle. Although I'll point out that perhaps you missed the point of the subjective comment I made. I shall clarify it for you so we can avoid misunderstanding, fear not. The last part of the statement should have made it clear that discussing what constitutes a good or bad DM is the subjective part of the statement, not whether or not they should post here. I hate Cthulu stuff with a violent passion, so anyone who DMs a game that makes heavy use of that is going to be a bad DM in my book. You hate WoD crossover stuff, for example, so I'll be a terrible DM in your book. That's where the subjectivity comes in. Clear now? Though, I'll point out that you've been guilty of using strawmen arguements yourself, so you might want to reconsider tossing that term around as lightly as you seem to, lest a potentially well-founded accusation of hypocrisy find its way to you. ;) |
| #72mulaMay 22, 2008 11:10:22 | Whoah... are people here actually claiming that experience doesn't make a better DM? Wow! ![]() I can tell from personal experience that yes, experience does make a better DM. I'm sure this is not true in every case, but it applies to me. Hell yes. |
| #73JudgeDookieMay 22, 2008 11:35:17 | Whoah... are people here actually claiming that experience doesn't make a better DM? Wow! It doesn't make them a good DM. Some people have it, some people don't. |
| #74StiggerMay 22, 2008 11:52:25 | It can make a better DM, but some people have the learning curve of a zombie, to borrow the phrase from Volo, and all the experience in the world isn't going to help them, and some are just never going to be good at DMing, period, for whatever reason. |
| #75rinonalyrna_fathomlinMay 22, 2008 12:29:21 | Being on the FR forums isn't so much about running into the occassional strawman as it is about winding your way through endless rolling fields fields of them. How sad for you. |
| #76rinonalyrna_fathomlinMay 22, 2008 12:30:28 | Whoah... are people here actually claiming that experience doesn't make a better DM? Wow! Well, your personal experience is not the same as everyone else's. |
| #77markustay63May 22, 2008 13:24:09 | You guys are making me break 'Lurker Status'... Apples and Oranges here... and maybe a few pomegranates thrown in for confusion. ![]() Will years of experience make for a better DM? YES! Definately.... However, if you rate DMs on a scale of 1 to 10, then I know a few that would have started out around -30... seriously. With ALL their years of experience (about 15 for the ones I'm thinking of), they've 'leveled up' to about a -3. ![]() They are MUCH better then I remember them being, but I still wouldn't game with them. On the other hand, Ed G. probably started out a '10' (and I have had the extreme pleasure of playing with one of those 'godlike' DMs once), so all of his years of experience puts him around a 20... on a scale of 1 to 10. ;) So, YES, experience makes you better, but NO, it doesn't neccessarily make for a good DM. I have seen the best and worst of them over the year, and I am pretty much certain a LOT of it has to do with diversity. A small, tight-knit group of gamers who NEVER game in other groups and only rarely excepts new players will not 'grow' at the same rate as a person who plays in many different groups. Those 'elitist' groups tend to be very full of themselves, and they think the way they play is the ONLY correct way. If some of their players would just get some experience in other groups, then they'd be much better off as a whole. You can only learn so much from a small group, end of story, no matter HOW MANY years they have played together. Experience, by definition, means you need to 'go forth' and experience stuff, and the more you learn, the less you realize you really know. ![]() I also agree that FR needed a little bit of a 'shake-up', but I think they have gone WAY overboard, and not entirely for the reasons they have told us. The timejump was the deal-breaker for many of us - I could have learned to live with the rest - but I think they may have bitten off more then they can chew. Only time will tell... |
| #78KhaeliethMay 22, 2008 16:29:12 | What MT said. Completely agree! |
| #79laerekh_jaelreMay 22, 2008 19:11:53 | I think this consolidation of all the FR threads into one is just another slap in our faces as FR fans. If Wizards wants to blame it on us as a consequence for not meeting a quota of threads per month, then that's just really fare since Wizards hasn't put out any new FR material (except a couple novels) for months now. Give us something to talk about, and we'll discuss it. But for a few months now we've had nothing new to talk about except how much we hate Wizards for ruining the Realms we know. How many more "F U for killing Mystra and the Realms" threads do you want us to make to make your quotas? Once new products start coming out, I'm sure the discussions will heat up again, and the quota will have been met, but we are currently being punished for sitting through a huge down time in Wizards FR releases (as if the downtime wasn't punishment enough). |
| #80KhaeliethMay 22, 2008 19:17:57 | Let's egg the WotC hq! Bring back Ravenloft! Undo 4th ed changes to FR! Give us cakes! |
| #81JudgeDookieMay 22, 2008 19:20:46 | Let's egg the WotC hq! That's just stupid. We all know WotC isn't going to relent. Cakes are simply not going to be given to us. |
| #82rinonalyrna_fathomlinMay 22, 2008 19:30:13 | I think this consolidation of all the FR threads into one is just another slap in our faces as FR fans. To be fair, the Eberron forum was consolidated into one board, too. |
| #83mulaMay 22, 2008 22:42:22 | Well, your personal experience is not the same as everyone else's. There's nothing BUT personal experience regarding this, ehm, issue. As far as I know, there are no studies done on whether people become "better" or "good" DMs/GMs with experience. Yeah, I'd say that if you simply lack the talent you won't necessarily become a great DM even if you DMed for 20 years, but I would say they'd improve in that time. I mean, isn't that a given, really - you tend to become better in everything with experience. |
| #84lord_karsusMay 22, 2008 23:06:45 | I think this consolidation of all the FR threads into one is just another slap in our faces as FR fans. The same criterion to meet were placed on every section of the boards. If you haven't noticed, there have been some very radical changes all over the place. |
| #85Mr_MiscellanyMay 22, 2008 23:39:22 | Though, I'll point out that you've been guilty of using strawmen arguements yourself, so you might want to reconsider tossing that term around... If I've ever used one, it wasn't with the intent of twisting others' words. In fact -and unlike most people here- I can and have readily admitted when I make a mistake in summarizing the remarks of other people. Besides, I prefer direct accusations, as you may recall. ::::::::::::::::::::::::: I think people who claim they've been slapped in the face by WotC's reorg of the message boards need to do and/or realise several things. Amongst them:
So please: Put the forums before yourself. Otherwise, it's one forum forever. |
| #86StiggerMay 23, 2008 0:08:27 | I seem to recall you doing exactly that to a post from Dan a while ago, expressly for the intent of twisting words around... although you were pretty up front about it after the fact, I'll give you that much. But, I'd also lump those instances of taking things in the worst possible light without giving others the benefit of the doubt in with those sorts of tactics. But, you're hardly unique in that respect around here... far from really. Though I do agree that the reorganization of the boards is hardly a personal attack on any given community. I can understand why some may think that, but I also think they're wrong for the most part... although I still suspect that my wife had a point in thinking perhaps some marketting suit wanted to jettison portions of the Old Guard so we don't scare off the new customers they're hoping to attract, at least on some level. Feels that way at times at least, no idea one way or the other though. |
| #87Mr_MiscellanyMay 23, 2008 1:03:11 | Ok, Ok...to some degree GD was the exception. Can't avoid that bit of history, can I? ::::::::::::: My shell is just ever so slightly beginning to crack on the jettisoning idea....no proof of that as a fact, mind, but still I wonder what WotC is about. I personally think the leadership circle outside of Rich Baker are all eager to some degree to see the Realms change and want to make those changes. On another note, I have to admit I wouldn't mind seeing some of the extremist (from my POV) elements of Realms fandom go away (or at least fade into the background a bit more) with new people taking over. Fresh ideas and fresh approaches (read: people Lacking Prejudice and with no Overblown Sense of Entitlement) would do the setting wonders from an online community standpoint. IMNSHO of course. ;) |
| #88StiggerMay 23, 2008 1:58:56 | We are what we've done... ;) And no, there isn't any proof beyond a sneaking suspicion and bewilderment over some of the bizarre actions they've taken with 4e. The one big thing in favor of that not being the case is that at times they don't seem to really have a coherent plan on how to present 4e that I can see. As to extremists, well, they're bad for every group they gravitate around period, not just here. How one defines that, well... very subjective in a lot of respects. Though I doubt you'll find anyone who has a real absence of prejudice, since everything we define as good and bad in gaming is generally filtered through personal preferences at some point. Like me for instance, who will almost never find anything to do with Lovecraft/Cthulu even remotely interesting or of worth. Other people love it, such as Bruce "Mr. Tentacle" Cordell as an example, and see a great deal of good in it. To each their own though... so long as they leave room for everyone else to find something of value. To be honest, his involvement in the 4e Realms is my biggest concern, given his love of something I absolutely despise. It tends to magnify everything else for me for some reason. Guess I'll see when it hits the shelves. |
| #89alediranMay 23, 2008 8:43:09 | On another note, I have to admit I wouldn't mind seeing some of the extremist (from my POV) elements of Realms fandom go away (or at least fade into the background a bit more) with new people taking over. I'm not going anywhere. The more new players I can scare about the evilness of 4ed FR, the better. If there is one thing argentinians do well is to fight for lost causes. :D |
| #90Mournblade94May 23, 2008 15:00:58 | I am not really happy with the new realms changes... But what is it about the change of the boards that has everyone so mad? Am I missing somthing? Please help. |
| #91StiggerMay 23, 2008 15:55:23 | Used to be several boards, that got consolidated into one board... but that was with an adequate warning that it was going to happen. Some seem to view that as an attack, but I'm not really sure how considering that everyone is in the same spot. |
| #92alediranMay 23, 2008 16:03:40 | I don't think of it as an attack. I view it as complete lack of common sense, which is way worse in my ladder of sins. |
| #93JudgeDookieMay 23, 2008 16:17:07 | Used to be several boards, that got consolidated into one board... but that was with an adequate warning that it was going to happen. Some seem to view that as an attack, but I'm not really sure how considering that everyone is in the same spot. Well, the warning was that they were going to "restructure" the boards. "Consolidate" into a single board was never mentioned. As for the "attack" bit, no. In fact, now that I've had to deal with it a bit--and its probably already been mentioned at some point--I think they are trying to get the 3e'ers and the 4e'ers to actually mesh a bit and come to terms. Will it happen? Not completely. But.... I don't think of it as an attack. I view it as complete lack of common sense, which is way worse in my ladder of sins. If the intent I mentioned above was not the plan, then, yes. I agree completely--just as I did when it first happened. |
| #94StiggerMay 23, 2008 16:20:03 | What did we expect with a restructuring? It's not like Wrecan wasn't pretty upfront in what could potentially happen according to what he knew... which proved pretty accurate. The activity level will determine how sub-divided the board is, if at all... I see little reason to complain with that sort of reasoning. |
| #95blackball8_dupMay 23, 2008 16:28:03 | I am not really happy with the new realms changes... Since I used to lurk on my old name, I can tell you that the old way of doing things was much easier to navigate. I mean, when I posted a question every now and then, it wouldn't get lost in the clutter. Now, theres so much going on, I think thats bound to happen alot more often. But if people were told of the changes, I dont get why everyone is so angry either. But, whatever. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, no matter whatever it is. |
| #96lord_karsusMay 23, 2008 16:32:50 | Used to be several boards, that got consolidated into one board... but that was with an adequate warning that it was going to happen. Some seem to view that as an attack, but I'm not really sure how considering that everyone is in the same spot. -Indeed, for those who haven't noticed, the entire website has changed. Gleemax has been consolidated with the Wizards.Community boards. Numerous sections were merged, consolidated, and/or outright deleted. Because there is so much happening at once, and because, most Forgotten Realms contributers here are (blissfully) unaware of what goes on outside of the Forgotten Realms section, it's easy to understand how people can take what is going on as a "personal" attack on the Forgotten Realms. Well, the warning was that they were going to "restructure" the boards. "Consolidate" into a single board was never mentioned. -As I had mentioned numerous times, as I gently nudged people to tell CM how they felt when the decisions were being discussed, the talk was to made to consolidate things into one board. |
| #97alediranMay 23, 2008 16:32:55 | Knowing the size and speed of the train that is going to hit you doesn't means you are not going to feel pain. |
| #98lord_karsusMay 23, 2008 17:07:11 | Knowing the size and speed of the train that is going to hit you doesn't means you are not going to feel pain. -Of course not. But, in this case, there is no obvious pain, and, if anything, there are more benefits than negatives. |
| #99StiggerMay 23, 2008 17:10:48 | And it helps you get out of the way before it hits... but it comes down to an issue of wanting more boards, then post more useful things rather than rehashing the same arguements and complaints, particularly when they're futile by this point. ;) |
| #100Mr_MiscellanyMay 23, 2008 19:37:19 | The one big thing in favor of that not being the case is that at times they don't seem to really have a coherent plan on how to present 4e that I can see. I agree in that I don't see much going on at the 4E homepage of the Realms on Wotc’s site. Also, I don't recall seeing WotC advertise that the H1 module had beginning rules for playing 4E or that it included pre-generated characters. It’s things like these that should be pushed harder, IMO. As for that Cordell fellow....well he’s a pretty smart guy and a good designer based on my experience with his 3.5 work. I like to think he’s experienced enough with D&D as a whole that he won’t do to the Realms what Andy Collins (through lack of experience) did to 3.5 when he re-wrote sections of the Player’s Handbook. |
| #101StiggerMay 23, 2008 19:46:42 | To be honest, I wasn't even aware they even released the module until I read it here... not that it would have made much difference, as I don't use modules in the first place. Too many ideas running through my head as it is. As to Mr. Cordell, I don't dispute that he's good at his job, he is, the mechanics are quite good. I just have very different taste in my likes and dislikes in terms of fluff and lore, so his inclusion in 4e Realms team makes me wary of what he'll stick in there, in those terms. I don't doubt that mechanically it will be a definite improvement, at least if Saga is any indicator of things to come. |

| #104lord_karsusMay 23, 2008 20:39:42 | That's a good point. -Not that I am saying most of the people who contibute here have no clue about the going ons and 'politics' of the rest of these boards, but...:P -And, just ignore Mr. Misc. However, I'm wondering if one board will be enough when the 4E FRCG comes out. -By my count, we have equalled or surpassed the 25-post per 24-hours mandatory limit to have a second board instituted. So, sometime in the future, I am guessing there will be another board. If I were to do it, there's be "Races, Places & Classes" and "Deities, Magic, and Magic Items". Or something to that effect. |

I mostly would just post on the FR boards, although lately I've been posting in some of the other 4E boards as well (I guess I'm not used to just one board). -The wide and broad variety of subject matter, and posters, is what makes these boards superior to Candlekeep, the Realmsvault, ENWorld, Paizo, and so on (sorry, guys, but it's true). Star Wars, D&D, The Rec-Room, CharOp, Forgotten Realms, Eberron, Everything In-Between, and so on and so forth. I encourage every to 'roam'. Lennon and McCarthy? :D Oh yeah, I'm pretty sure we've crossed that mark. Do you think the people in charge (whoever they are) are keeping track of what boards might need to be split? -The 'experiment' is ongoing (supposedly), as it began Monday, and is lasting a week, but Mike (G0) specifically said he was looking for community help and support. Being the "acting" Forum Lead- as my nomination was never processed, as the program was temporarily frozen a few hours after I was twice nominated for the position- I know I'm going to let him know when/where he begins asking. |

Sounds like a great idea. Is it still possible for you to formally become the FL? I would ask about it. |
| #110lord_karsusMay 23, 2008 21:10:49 | Roaming can be fun. -Yup. I never would have discovered the Rec-Room, my home away from home here. Home, of course, being the Forgotten Realms section. ;) Is it still possible for you to formally become the FL? I would ask about it. -You've got me. The nomination thread is still closed, last time I checked (I checked recently), so I am assuming the program is still frozen. If you want to get your point across I recommend quoting this thread in it's entirety and posting it here http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=960704 If you haven't I would also suggest reading page 79 of this thread and pages 89 - current page. -Posted there numerous times. It's not exaggerating to say that, uh, criticisms and concerns aren't exactly...handled, so to speak. It's more of a "You suck!" "No I don't" "Yes you do" "*Delete*" match. <-- (That's a grim smile, mind you) |

| #117Mr_MiscellanyMay 24, 2008 0:47:08 | Lest you learn to bend a little, 'tis all but gauranteed a 'hard time' will be had. Which is to say there had better be no forum lead requests to remove Realms DMing inquiries from this forum or otherwise discourage Realms Dungeon Masters from posting here and talking about their Realms Campaigns in this forum. In exchange, yours truly will lighten up considerably. |
| #118lord_karsusMay 24, 2008 1:22:36 | Lest you learn to bend a little, 'tis all but gauranteed a 'hard time' will be had. -Threats are against the CoC. However mild they are. Which is to say there had better be no forum lead requests to remove Realms DMing inquiries from this forum or otherwise discourage Realms Dungeon Masters from posting here and talking about their Realms Campaigns in this forum. -Of course, none of that has ever been disallowed to begin with. That these types of requests (Purely mechanical D&D, in regards to the Forgotten Realms) don't come up often is simply by virtue of the fact that that these things are not commonly asked. |

| #121Mr_MiscellanyMay 24, 2008 2:39:14 | -Threats are against the CoC. However mild they are. Poor choice of words, I admit. Let me parse it for you: Ducking behind the CoC won’t change the fact that as forum lead you’ll have to find ways to cooperate and work with people you have openly stated (within the past couple days) you don’t like, for the benefit of this forum. -Of course, none of that has ever been disallowed to begin with. That these types of requests (Purely mechanical D&D, in regards to the Forgotten Realms) don't come up often is simply by virtue of the fact that that these things are not commonly asked. :headexplo Noooooo. Noooooo. Noooooo. Realms DMing questions involve far more than mechanics issues. |
| #122lord_karsusMay 24, 2008 2:46:24 | Poor choice of words, I admit. -Indeed, that's life. That said, as the saying goes, "It takes two to tango". Meaning, in other words, one needs to "give" a little to "get" a little. :headexplo -Regardless of what exactly entails a Forgotten Realms DM query, nothing was false in the last post. These types of queries have never been disallowed, when these types of queries are asked, the community is generally helpful in helping the OP find a solution to his/her problem, or provide to him/her suggestions, and so on, and such queries, as specifically related to DMing in the Forgotten Realms, as opposed to general questions on the Forgotten Realms, unrelated to DMing, do not come up as often. |

| #125StiggerMay 24, 2008 9:21:40 | I don't recall ever seeing anyone being 'chased off' for posting a DM question... quite the opposite really, with a few rare exceptions. Hells, we put up with some really ignorantly stupid questions at times without chasing folks off really... though the tolerance for X NPC versus Y NPC questions has thankfully dropped of late. |

Seriously, no offense meant by this. I'm just really curious why you'd want to do this, since you don't seem all that thrilled about 4E Realms. Will you try 4E Realms after all? |
