Festering wounds: Any enemy struck by the blade must make a fortitude DC 25 or contract Deathsong. Incubation 1 day minus a d8 to str, dex, and con every day until the disease is cured. BVD pg30

If the wielder fails a will test against the blades ego then suffers from Melting fury, minus a d4 to str., dex., and con., every round until the wielder can make an will save vs. its ego to let go of the sword.

Gauntlet of Energy absorbtion: Can absorb magical or psionic energy at a max rate of 30 pts of damage worth a round anything else thats left the user can then make the appropriate save vs. the remainding damage.

This is kind of freaky ... I was just coming by here (for the first time ever) curious about this very subject.

In a game supposedly set in a 'generic D&D world', the DM has namedropped him and several other people who I haven't heard of who I'm guessing are FR novel cognoscenti (which just makes me wish he'd just say 'It's in the Realms' so I know what's legal and what isn't!!).

But anyway, given that he's shown distinctive fanboy elements (the game sometimes seems to exist solely so he can drop names and show off NPCs rather than the PCs doing anything), I'm curious if an official listing of AE's stats exists anywhere in print? If it does come down to a slapdown, I want to be sure that we win or lose fair and square.

"Well, I don't have his stats, so I can't really run the fight ..."
"Here ya go."

In 3.5, I would probably drop the 1 lv of assassin(since he never uses the death attack at all), and put another lv in ranger. In 3.0, 1 lv of ranger gave TWF as a bonus feat, while in 3.5, it was revised to the 2nd lv of ranger to prevent front-loading. This would allow him to preserve his feat block.

So I would put him at rogue4/ranger2/fighter12.

I would make it do vampiric touch 1/day with a successful sneak attack that explains why it never hit drizzt but would explain why it hits anyone who is surprized by it.

The HP are premenate like vampire touch, Regis recovered using it and never shrunk down

And it hurts undead as well due to draining the shade (and doing something to Enteri).

I would think to keep one assassin elvle jsut so that Artemis Enteri can really be called as 'assassin' but becuase he seems not use anysort of spells as assassin my quess would go that he is non-magicall sort of assassin (perhaps bonus feat each time when new spell level accuired? Or some other class which gives death attack at 1lvl?).

darkness and clouds of ash are both inconsequential seeing as both characters have the 'blind fight' feat. What should be more of a factor is that Artemis's weapons are both +4 (one is a Netheril artifact) while Drizzt's are +2and 3...and I'm pretty certain that Scimitars can't be 'weapon finessed' with a dexterity modifier since they are too big. The largest weapons that can be finessed are rapiers.

Actually, in Drizzt's current write up (accordin to Candlekeep which is maintained by Ed Greenwood and various others), he has the Dervish prestige class that allows him to treat scimitars as light weapons rather than one handed weapons for all purposes. Thus, allowing him to apply his dexterity modifier instead of his strength to his attack. In case you want to see the prestige class, its in the Complete Warrior and the class ability is called "Slashing Blades". :D

What Gothic Dan says is true, but it is a current build for Drizzt and a build that for the most part explains his class and abilities. Including stats for his cat. Additionally, as far as I've seen, that particular build genarally mirrors his potential. Hence "a current write up" and I say "accordin to" only beacuse it is found on that particular web site, and when I am in other boards it is the one I've seen most refered to. But, that does not change the fact of Gothic Dan's statement. :D

But if you want to get technical, it seems he is a fighter 10/ barbarian 1/ ranger 5 of Mielikki... though I personally don't think this build does justice.

so 'officially' he should not be able to strike using his dexterity modifier since he uses scimitars...man, that has always annoyed the hell out of me. I remember building a Drizzt clone in Neverwinter Nights who couldn't hit the broad side of a dire rat.

And then there is the fact that he uses chainmail when the "dual wield" ranger feat clearly says that you must wear light armor in order for "dual wield" to work...chainmail is medium armor.

Since when has Charon's Claw been officially statted as a +4 weapon? It hasn't. No doubt when it is statted, it will end up being powered down to reflect the ridiculous wealth rules.

After all, Entreri's dagger in the novels was a decidely lethal weapon, but in the rulebooks it's been powered down.

First of all, I have never seen game stats do justice to what a character is capable of in the books. After all, look at Elminster! He's one of the greatest archwizards in all of fantasy, yet when broken down into a stat block, he's just another wizard. Kinda depressing. But when it comes to the game versions of Artemis and Drizzt, game stats have always fallen far short of my expectations. I don't think they will ever accurately stat anything out. It isn't possible. Especially if they keep with these stupid wealth rules. Those rules work for PCs and NPCs in games, but NOT for established characters from novels. The transfer just doesn't work.

As for Artemis's sword...I doubt that any Netheril sword (what is that 10,000 years old?) with its level of sentience and magical ability is anything less than +4, if not a +5.

Also, why would the Shadowvar have sent someone to retrieve a low level magical item...

I have no doubt that Charon's Claw is of a higher quality and enchantment than either of Drizzt's weapons.

The majority of Netherese artifacts were quasimagical, in the fact that they didn't have any power outside of the radii of their mythallars.

it actually fell 1700 years ago, i was wrong...

but the fact still remains that Charon's Claw is one of the rare Netherese artifacts that was not Quasi magical, meaning it either predates the Mythalars or was created in Netherils Silver age outside the influence of the Mythalars.

Its just speculation but I bet the thing was created by a Lich or Necromancer who accidently got trapped in the blade.

My take on Charon's Claw is that's actually the oldest weapon in the world - roughly 250,000 years - and isn't really a sword at all but the head of an actual god that just resembles a sword. It's got an INT of 79, has the soul of elder demon *and* a golden dragon trapped inside it, and is one day planning to conquer the world and use Larloch as its teaboy.

Well, it's one theory...

I would agree that Charon's Claw is a very powerful weapon, probably +3 or +4. I don't agree, however, that it is an actual Artifact, like the Staff of the Magi or the Book of Vile Darkness. I think that Salvatore used the word "artifact" to denote that the weapon was very old, from an ancient empire and/or past age, and NOT that it was a singuarly powerful item above and beyond a "regular" magic item.

Also, too, why would a magical sword created by the Netherese be more potent "just because" than, say, a sword created by the elves? Twinkle, for instance, was given to Drizzt by Malchor Harpell (in the 'Halfling's Gem') who said that the sword was "forged by the elves of a past age", and the other text (which I will not quote, for fear I'll get in trouble) denotes that it was forged with some pretty hefty and powerful magic (stars, moon, etc). And, correct me if I'm wrong, aren't the elves supposed to be kinda like the "godfathers of magic" for humans in Faerun? So I guess I'm saying that if you start throwing around the word "artifact" and "most powerful sword ever" to describe a really old and powerful sword, then there are others who might want to get in line and apply for that "Artifact status"...and then things would REALLY get out of hand!

Whether Netherese magic is more powerful than Elven magic is neither here nor there when discussing how powerful a certain weapon might be. No one rates kobolds very highly but give one enough skill at weapon forging and the right equipment and knowledge and he could forge an epic weapon.

Though I hold no love for the elves, I would disagree with that "elves just have pointy ears" remark. Elven High Magic was nor is anything to scoff at, and I would hazard to say that it is at least in the same general ballpark as Netherese magic. Not the same, certainly, and I'm sure that the Netherese MIGHT have surpased the elves for a time. ACTUALLY, they did...and look where that one great attempt got them!

Whether Netherese magic is more powerful than Elven magic is neither here nor there when discussing how powerful a certain weapon might be. No one rates kobolds very highly but give one enough skill at weapon forging and the right equipment and knowledge and he could forge an epic weapon.

My point exactly. Just because a certain civilization attained such a height does not necessarily mean that all of their creations and crafts ALSO attained the same height. Does every magic item that the Netherese craeted able to bind the Gods? Or is every magic item created by the elves long ago able to create a Mythal? And if you are to label Charon's Claw as an Artifact simply because it was created by the Netherese, then I counter to say that Twinkle, which was created by powerful and old Elven magic, might also be able to attain that "artifact status".

In my opinion I feel that neither sword is an Artifact, though they are still very old and powerful magic weapons. And that's all they SHOULD be.

IMO Twinkle as a +5 blade (2nd ed) should definetly have been an Artifact level weapon...but now that its a mere +2, its not very impressive outside novelization.

I'm no fanboy...and I've never even read a DnD book, but to me it seems that Artemis' new sword holds more power & mystery than either one of Drizzt's current blades.

Ultimately thats not what really matters however...Artemis could have a +6 diety weapon, but since he is a villain he is destined to lose against the hero, despite being a higher level character and having better equipment.

Actually, I don't think Netheril ever surpassed elven high magic. Sure it was great but elven high magic sundered an entire continent, destroyed entire civilizations, and caused the most powerful race on the planet to go insane time after time.

Karsus' binding of Mystryl might have been the start of when Netherese magic began to surpass elven high magic, had he not destroyed all of Netheril then.

Funny you should say that. In Servant Of The Shard, Entreri doesn't use a spell to beat Drizzt at all. The fight is already over, Drizzt has won, and then Entreri attacks Drizzt from behind - *that's* when the psionic spell kicks in but it was nothing of Entreri's doing as he wasn't even aware of it until it happened. He didn't "use it because he was losing" at all.

But yes, Drizzt is the better fighter of the two going by the novels. But this thread was asking about Entreri's stats. As characters in novels don't have stats, I'm going by what's in the official rulebooks.

I know I would consider Artemis a very high level assassin. And in no way would I place his fighter levels above his rogue levels. I would say with the updated books....Drizzt and Artemis are nearly epic level characters.

Rogue 8/assassin 8/ fighter 4

And Charons claw is an artifact you will most likely have to make for yourself.....as well as the vampiric dagger. I would give the vampiric dagger an ability close to a vampires blood drain....and charons claw will take alot of thought.

No way. Drizzt and Artemis are now at a point where the enemies they're fighting are no longer giving them any experience at all. Unless they both go out and kill a couple of dragons each, they'll be stuck at the levels assigned to them in the FRCS.

I know I would consider Artemis a very high level assassin. And in no way would I place his fighter levels above his rogue levels.

They were already higher in 2e. In Villains' Lorebook he's listed as a dual-classed Thief/Fighter with Fighter being about 3 levels above.

I don't know if anyone is still reading this thread, but I found a very impressive take on Drizzt's stats made by someone called Mon Yao featured on Alaundo's Library. He's got Drizzt listed as:

Ranger 6/Fighter 8/Barbarian 1/Rogue 2/Dervish 1.

Personally, I think that's pretty close to how he's represented in the books. There's also new stats for his equipment:

Twinkle: +4 defending scimitar, glows brightly enough to fill a 20-foot radius.
Icingdeath: +2 evil outsider bane frost scimitar, grants the wielder fire resistance 10, and is intellegent (Int 10, Wis 15, Cha 15) with the special purpose of destroying evil outsiders.

I'd buy that. If you go off of this updated Drizzt and figure Entreri is of comparable skill, you might be able to figure more appropriate stats for an updated Entreri. I haven't read the last two books in the Sellswords trilogy, so I'm not sure just how much like a shade he is to give him the appropriate powers.

It isn't definitive, no, but there are signs that he MIGHT have gotten some kind of "shadey" template. Probably something that will be explored in future novels...

The Dagger is a Netherese relic/artifact

Charon's Claw is not of Netherese origin

Drizzit and Art are equal in fighting skills, the battle in the crystal shard drizzit had the advantage, art was getting older, and slower, the novel made that clear, if you remember later charon's claw gave it's previous owner a youthful strenght, what if any youthfull ability it gave to art is unknown, and even later I assume the dagger drain on that shade most likely restored art's youth as well

now I believe artemis is back to his old/new self and has a more of his old spring in his fighting ability again

artemis original stats unique back in the 1e days he was listed as a fighter7/assassin13

it also noted that artemis had a perfect hand/eye coordination that made it possible for him to use a weapon in each hand with NO penalty at all

also artemis and drizzt both use to have a special lethal killing skill that worked like this: on a hit of 5 or more than was needed to hit an opponent they did double damage, and had a base 10%, with a +/- 3% per level difference of instantly killing there foe, it was these type of skill that made them the realms deadliest melee fighters

also originally artemis got famous as a merc leader, his legendary skills drew the attention of a pasha who had the best assassins, thiefs, and warrior train artemis to become deadliest skilled killer in the land, under his control of course

How's about this for Entreri:

Rogue 4/Fighter 8/Ranger 2/Assassin 6

I figure a level 20 Entreri is formidable enough to please everyone. He's got a BAB of +17, a sneak attack of +5d6, death attack Fort save DC of 19, evasion, uncanny dodge and improved uncanny dodge, 8 character feats, 1 feat for being human, 5 Fighter feats, and Track and Two-Weapon Fighting from his Ranger levels.

How does that sound for the most deadly assassin in Faerûn?

Actually, in Drizzt's current write up (accordin to Candlekeep which is maintained by Ed Greenwood and various others),

Drizzt's most current writeup is in the 3.0 FRCS. To convert to 3.5, do some math (pretty easy. Add 10 levels of fighter, 1 of barbarian, and 5 of ranger to a drow, and choose a feat selection that best expresses his abilities in-novel). Counting is always important. Candlekeep, while a vast library of RealmsLore, is NOT 'maintained' by Ed Greenwood. It is the work of dedicated lovers of FR. Ed, most fortunately, has graced the place with true RealmsLore..

Ok, fair enough, if I am incorrect about Mr. Greenwood's involvement, than I admit so. My thanks to Karsus the Mad for correcting me. But, none the less, I do feel that that particular write-up does mirror his abilities. Though not exact, it is in my opinion, close. Take that with a grain of salt though. As Drizzt's abilities, skills, and fighting prowess will more than likely never be properly duplicated.
Once again though, my thanks to Karsus the Mad for the correction. :D

but you cant go by offical stats cause the officals didn't create either of them. the only one who can "officially" say that one is better than the other is salvatore. i'm just posting my opinions and inturpritations of his books. and if you read the servant of the shard entreri only beat drizzt cause of a spell. and he used that cause he was loosing.

Not to but in on the conversation, but the incident you're talking about happened in "The Silent Blade." not "The Servant of the Shard." Silent Blade is the first book in the series, and Jarlaxle makes Drizzt and Artemis fight so Artemis can concentrate on the tasks for Bregan Dearth and the Basadoni Guild.

He doesn't tend to use his death attack ability much, preferring instead to beat them in melee. This is what makes him one of the deadliest assassins in Faerun, he can kill targets that would ordinarily be immune to poisoin, instant death etc.

In other words, a fighter.

Mostly yes, but his varity of skills separates him from other fighters. Skilled at infiltration, disguise, tracking and getting information out of people Artemis is more like a bounty hunter.

In fact he was originally statted as a Fighter/assassin, which included about 7 levels in assassin. However when 2nd ed came out they had decided to axe the assassin class. TSR asked Salvatore to kill off Artemis as his class was to become obsolete. RAS felt that an interesting character was developing in Entreri and said that Artemis was a Fighter/rogue who killed for money, therefore he didn't need to be of the assassin class. You can see this change in the books as the mention of Artemis as an assassin drops off for awhile.

With the arrival of 3.0 he was firmly established as a Fighter/Rogue and given only one level in assassin to represent his proffession, if nothing else.

....and so goes the tale of Artemis Entreri's life as an assassin.

Stats from the Villian Lorebook:

Human male 11th-level thief/15thlevel
fighter
ARMOR CLASS: -2 (-6)
MOVE: 12
HIT POINTS: 107
THAC0: 5
NO. OF ATTACKS: 5
ALIGNMENT: Lawful evil
STR 13, DEX 18, CON 15, INT 16, WIS 15, CHA 13

Allies/Companions: Pasha Pook and the thieves
and assassins guilds of Calimport. At various times in
his past Artemis has also temporarily worked with the
following persons: Sydney, Jierdan (whom he later
killed), and Bok of the Arcane Brotherhood, Jarlaxle
Artemis is a tactical master, taking every advantage
offered him and seeking to create more. He'll
often do this by taunting his foe into anger and mistakes.
Artemis is also a very fast learner. If he observes
a particular combat maneuver even a few
times, he can add it to his own deadly repertoire.

Combat/Tactics: Artemis is a consummate warrior,
combining his ambidexterity, thieving training,
and warrior's weapon skills to be one of the most
dangerous swordsmen in the Realms. Few men indeed
could have so repeatedly crossed blades with
Drizzt Do'Urden and lived to tell of it.

Magical Items: +4 Cloak of protection, +4 dagger,
defender (life-stealer), +2 ring of protection, and a
sword of wounding +1 (sometimes referred to as a
saber).

Equipment: Artemis has standard adventuring
gear, which in his case includes thieving tools, spare
weapons and clothes, rope, and so on.
Nonweapon Proficiencies: Blind-fighting, direction
sense, disguise, endurance, rope use, survival
(northern wilderness and desert), tightrope walking,
tracking; 1 open.

Weapons of Proficiency: Artemis is specialized in
the two-weapon style and has the ambidexterity proficiency
(both from the Complete Fighter's Handbook
[CFH]). His other proficiencies are short bow, light
crossbow, dagger (thrown and wielded), rapier
(CFH), sling, staff, long sword, short sword; 2 open.
Thieving Abilities: PP 80%; OL 65%; F/RT 50%;
MS 99%; HS 90%; DN 55%; CW 99%; RL 20%;
SU 75%.

darkness and clouds of ash are both inconsequential seeing as both characters have the 'blind fight' feat.

Just thought I'd let it be known that due to some liberties taken by the fantastic gaming/writers here at Wizards and Co., Drizzt has a simular ability as a dervish (Slashing Blades; Comp. War), being capable to use scimitar as a light weapon. I think they chalked it up to drow heritage.

In theory, would you say if Artemis was as old as drizzt (Saying that Drizzt is well over hundred by now), he would surpass him in nearly everway through the skills of combat ? Or would the fanbase not allow logic to prevail? All though humans don't live as long, it's always great to see some 40 year old wizard as powerful as a 700 year old elf. -Drizzt was born in 1297 DR. The current date is 1375 DR. This makes Drizzt 78. We no longer know what effects aging will have on Entreri, as he is no longer fully Human. So, that said, your question will have to wait until more information is shed on Entreri's state- and, this is extremely unlikely to be published.

Or would the fanbase not allow logic to prevail? All though humans don't live as long, it's always great to see some 40 year old wizard as powerful as a 700 year old elf.

-Explanations for this are already provided for, in D&D. Humans have short lifespans, meaning that they work at a feaver pitch to accumulate magic, while Elves and other long-lived creatures don't bust their asses so hard to accumulate magic so fast. An analogy: Humans knock back shots of vodka to get drunk, while Elves and others slowly sip and enjoy wine.

(Elminster is proof of long living humans )

-Elminster has Elven blood within him, though very faint and diluted, and is a Chosen of Mystra, which grants immortality, such that one cannot die from old age, so he is hardly an example of an ordinary Human.

Incorrect. Humans in DnD get a extra feat each level. It has nothing to do with less desire. And if you want to get technical, I can name a few novels of elves getting quite upset at the fact of humans surpassing that of elven teachings in a 4th of the time.

Oh, and jarlaxel's last words to his fellow Drow ally were something along the lines of: "How long will you be on the surface?-----Perhaps as long as a humans lifespan..maybe a bit more". No where in any novel that I have read, did it imply anything other than Artemis having a gift and being more than a human.

-Yes, this one feat, and well as the extra skill points at first level, and the extra one(?) after first level are represenative of Humanity's ability to quickly grasp and understand a concept, be it magic, swordplay, knowledge, whatever it is. Being that Humans have a limited lifespan, contained in most cases to within a three-fourths of a century or so, the drive for mastery is at a much more rapid pace than that of longer lived races, who abhor the single-minded drive for power that Humans have. Elves, for instance, can spend a century or more on a single task, such as sculpting. A certain style of Elven sculpting involves allowing the elements to change the stone. Results only manifest after a long period of time. That kind of mindset pervades Elven culture. Remember, Elves do not reach maturity until the age 100 or so. Those Elves who amass power at a rapid rate are not given consideration for Selu'Taar training, if the individual in question is a magician, and instead, are watched with concern, and sometimes "interventions"- for a lack of better words- are staged.

-You are a bit behind, then. The short story entitled "That Funny Sword", or something to that effect, in the short story anthology Realms of Shadow, changes Entreri's physiology, when he absorbs the essence of a Shade via his vampiric dagger. Before hand, it was mentioned numerous times that Entreri felt that age was beginning to catch up with him. In the short story in which his physiology was altered, and all subsequent stories (Books II and II of The Sellswords trilogy) he mentioned that he no longer felt that his body was beginning to slow, and that he felt youthful again. Being as that we have no clear definition of what exatly happened to Entreri, he has either obtained the ability to live past the normal Human lifespan, be it a little bit, or a lot, or simply has simply become "refreshed"- meaning he no longer feels the effects of aging- but is still contained to that three-fourths of a century that Humans life for.

Are they fighting each other head-to-head? Does Entreri have a group of...I don't know, Navy SEALS with him? Does Drizzt have allies in the area? And so on and so forth...

So, if Artemis is Drizzt's rival...and he's 40 to 70, could you not safely say that someone of Entreri's combat skill level at the age of 70 (without having human aging a problem of course) surpassing Drizzt being 70 as well? It's like saying: You have a 12 year old who can do quantim physics. Then this 30 year old just gets done learning it as well. -No, because in the time that Entreri has to hone his skills, so does Drizzt. They have more-or-less buried the hatchet, anyway.

It's like saying: You have a 12 year old who can do quantim physics. Then this 30 year old just gets done learning it as well. -Age is in no way an indicator of where one's intelligence "tops out". The twelve year old in question can be a prodigy, sure, but might reach his "maximum capacity" to retain knowledge at age 13, whereas this does not happen to the thirty year old in question for another twenty years, giving him two more decades to learn.

-The clear cut answer that you are looking for does not exist, especially not in the format that you want it. You should know this by now.

IMO if you had to make 3.5 chars out of drizzt or entreri, they would have feats and skills gained by circumstance, which in turn makes them undisputably much more powerfull than any char you could hope to generate. Also of course drizzt would win in a 1v1 against entreri soley because of the anklets. he could run circles around entreri, and im sure he knows how to stab thru viels of ash

Actually they have fought fairly only one time without magic or interruption. And Drizzt won through a head-butt to Entreri's eye that even he claims was lucky. To counter the ash Drizzt simply needs to drop a ball of darkness. Plus we don't truley know the full benefits of Entreri shade aspects. In the end, Drizzt has the greatest defensive strategy ever created on Faerun..Plot Armor+infinity. He will always win his battles(even against beings who could literally destroy him with a thought). :P

That fight with Errtu in the Crystal Shard immediately springs to mind. Oh boy, how fun that one was

Well in Drizzts defense, That battle was simply Errtu under estimating his opponent and again luck.

I suppose. Although in the back of any demon's mind is the favored tactic: Kill without hesitation.

There was obviously some "author's convinience" involved, but not so much in the actual fight. It was more a combination of catching him off-balance from that bluff (in D&D rules, it might be kinda like a feint), and the luck that he happened to find Icingdeath imediately beforehand.

Personally, I think Icingdeath should be more powerful than Twinkle. Twinkle doesn't have any real powers, aside from the pretty glow, Icingdeath may very well be just as old (it may not, but there's some circumstantial evidence at least), and Icingdeath is at least semi-sentient. Just look at how powerful the other sentient weapons in the series are! And at least in some circumstances (ie, when fighting demons or fire elementals for example) Icingdeath actually performs better than Artemis and Catti's swords.
