Artus Cimber: Harper, Hero... Exarch of Auril?

Sep 26, 2008 1:30:08 This just in: according to the Realmslore article in Dragon #367, Artus Cimber is now an exarch of Auril.

What in the bloody blue blazes?

I realize that Ubtao is gone. I realize that it is very possible that Alisanda (his lady, a bara-- or Chosen-- of Ubtao) is almost certainly dead as well. However, as the title says, Artus was a Harper. A hero. Why is he now an exarch of Auril? I realize that the Ring of Winter has to be involved somehow, but come on WotC. Don't pull this without an explanation.

Sep 26, 2008 20:44:45 This probably all has to do with Artus holding the Ring of Winter. While he was entitled to become a barae (as per completing the "test" they have to take), he chose not to become one, so he doesn't necessarily belong to Ubtao.

That said, it still rubs me the wrong way. *shrug* Then again, the 4E Realms on the whole rubs me the wrong way, too.

*This part, I am a little fuzzy on. I got a quick crash course on the book from Rin, so I may or may not have gotten that part right.

Anyway, he told me some stuff about the character direction, and it had nothing to do with him being a follower of Auril.

-Well, that was "way back". ;)

-One of the worst things- I think- about a shared world format, is that even if you create a character, they're not really "yours". Elaine is always asked things like, "What happens to Elaith? What happens to Liriel?", and so on, and can never answer. She doesn't want to say one thing, and then have WotC go a totally different direction with the character. I suspect that, after so many years, this is exactly what happened here.

I've only decided to shun the novels, since I have no interest in the world they take place in, but strangely, I still like to see where the 'game world' is headed, even if I don't like the direction.
Smells like comic-bookish convoluted-ness to me. Could be hit or miss.

Its not all bad - some comic book stuff is very good. Unfortunately, WotC tends to dip into the shallow end of the pool.

We shall see what we shall see - being corrupted by an evil artifact is very old-school (that was the entire premise behind Diablo I & II), but it is such a mainstay of fantasy that it could be good, with the right spin.

Also - both Ubtao and Auril represent primal, natural forces, so they're not all that different on a very basic level. And who knows? Ubtao may have even known her back in his 'Primordial' days. ;)
