| #1suprahAug 13, 2008 13:48:32 | People keep saying all these changes are supposed to attract new players? I am a prospective a new player interested in the Realms from the novels and NWN series/Baldu'rs Gate console games. I have a considerable miniature collection, and I've been interested in trying out the rpg, since it made sense to get more out of my money for my minis. I found the lore (pre 4e) for the realms very in-depth and interesting, but all these changes and genocide of interesting npcs has me turned off from the Realms altogether. The npcs and dieties is what gave the realms the feel that I loved. I'll probably still enjoy the novels, but I dont see myself getting involved in the rpg in any way shape or form now, which is good I guess cause I can save some money. I wonder how much used 3.5 books will go for now, cause thats a product I'm actually interested in. For the record I have NEVER bought a book that deals exclusively with the rpg, just minis and novels. As a new player, I'm not interested in anything I've heard from 4E. Cliffs: I was a prospective new player to the Realms, and after all the 4e changes I'm no longer interested. |
| #2merrikcaleAug 13, 2008 20:56:02 | Cliffs: I was a prospective new player to the Realms, and after all the 4e changes I'm no longer interested. well, at least you don't have hundreds of dollars of supplements that are now relatively useless in the 4-Gotten Realms |
| #3sfdragonAug 13, 2008 22:15:00 | no, not entirely useless. trivia pursuit style game in the Realms... This famous wizard used to live in the realms hundreds of years ago, and wore a pointy red hat. Before he died, he was rumored to be over 2000 years old. just dont play with Elminster, he would win.... and I'd assume the feats in those books would still be usable, even if the prcs are not. tweak this for use with that |
| #4lord_karsusAug 13, 2008 23:30:10 | Cliffs: I was a prospective new player to the Realms, and after all the 4e changes I'm no longer interested. -So: A) Ignore the changes, and play a 4e game using the 3e era campaign setting. B) Ignore the changes, and play a 3e game using the 3e era campaign setting. |
| #5rauricAug 14, 2008 0:06:57 | -So: Exactly. |
| #6Mr_MiscellanyAug 14, 2008 2:00:38 | Or come join my campaign. It would take me just one session to get the OP hooked on the 4E Realms. So far so good with my 4E Realms campaign. |
| #7the_ubbergeekAug 14, 2008 2:04:01 | So why not try to look past the past, and see if there is good things there? New heroes, new era, new hope. Changes are frightening, I know it very well. But changes are not necessarly bad, and perhaps with time, they can be appreciated. |
| #8forcideAug 14, 2008 2:10:29 | I have to say, I'm far more interested in playing in the new Realm than in the old. |
| #9creyzi4zb12Aug 14, 2008 3:08:38 | -So: Or u could play as an orc....really really fun!! :P |
| #10umbralknightAug 14, 2008 3:09:50 | Now is probably a good time to start snapping up all those 3.5 source books that you don't have (I know I will come Christmas). Regardless of what good/bad people can say about the 4e rules, 3.5 is a good ruleset, has plenty of good sourcebooks, and the 3.x realms are easily recognisable as the realms you love from the BG/NWN games. 4e is no reason to stop playing, or to not start playing, 3.5e. |
| #11Mr_MiscellanyAug 14, 2008 3:28:08 | I agree with UmbralKnight...you can find lots of good, useful adventure ideas and helpful gaming stuff in 3.5 (and 3.0) books. Much of it can even be used in 4E. |
| #12colmanAug 14, 2008 3:36:45 | I've just spent a lot of time poring over old lore - and even buying some of the 3e sources I didn't have - in order to prepare a 4e campaign. What a fool, eh? All that research work for nothing. The village of Volkumburgh, the Heart of the Mine, the hidden vales in the Thunder Peaks are all gone, disappeared in a 100 years. Hullack Forest has disappeared. Cormyr and its traditions are no more. Oh wait. |
| #13viktor_von_doomAug 14, 2008 5:00:10 | I have to say, I'm far more interested in playing in the new Realm than in the old. Ditto. |
| #14lord_donnachieAug 14, 2008 7:18:28 | just download the 2/3E stuff posted free on Wizard's website. I'd recommend the Volo books and FG Adventures (good fluff info on the Heartlands) to start. Use the 4e core books and your good. My FG group still plays pre-ToT (far baCK ON THE Fr timeline) had has no trouble finding material. |
| #15iltharanosAug 14, 2008 13:59:48 | I have to say, I'm far more interested in playing in the new Realm than in the old. Aye, same here. |
| #16rinonalyrna_fathomlinAug 14, 2008 15:25:27 | So why not try to look past the past, and see if there is good things there? Well, he (she?) just said he (she?) is not interested in doing that. |
| #17alediranAug 14, 2008 15:33:40 | So why not try to look past the past, and see if there is good things there? Don't listen to him, just listen to your intuition. FR 4ed is not even 1% as good as the True Realms. |
| #18viktor_von_doomAug 14, 2008 15:37:29 | Don't listen to him, just listen to your intuition. FR 4ed is not even 1% as good as the True Realms. And if people think new is better? |
| #19umbralknightAug 14, 2008 15:43:00 | Can we clarify; are we discussing the OP's situation, or are we beating each other over the head with our respective ideologies? |
| #20alediranAug 14, 2008 15:44:54 | And if people think new is better? If he, on a deep instinctual level, and not because of peer pressure, happens to like it, then play. |
| #21arohkthedarkAug 14, 2008 15:53:08 | To the OP: my situation is not so different from yourself. For the last 8 or 10 years the only thing I had to do with DnD and the Forgotten Realms was video games and a few novels. When 4ed came out I thought. This time I'll give it a try. After playing Pen & Paper DnD I cant get enough. I also say I'm reluctant to go back and play the video games. The eye candy may be there but the depth and the freedom are not. Ive been reading post on these boards for a while now. I can definietly understand the frustration of those that our disappointed with changes and I can understand why thier are some excited about them. I cant and wont argue with preference. I would say dont let it stop you from trying the game (or any other Pnp RPG). It took me too long to realize I was missing out. |
| #22asokaAug 14, 2008 15:58:18 | I've been a fan of the Realms for quite some time, but never actually run a game in them or played in them. The 4e realms though got me and our group excited enough about it that we're happily rolling in a 4e Realms game. Can't wait for the books. |
| #23lord_karsusAug 14, 2008 16:01:40 | Or u could play as an orc....really really fun!! :P -I'm...sure. But, regardless of if you play an Orc or not, you'd still have to make a choice based on the two suggestions I provided. |
| #24merrikcaleAug 14, 2008 16:29:00 | -I'm...sure. But, regardless of if you play an Orc or not, you'd still have to make a choice based on the two suggestions I provided. Play 1e |
| #25lord_karsusAug 14, 2008 16:42:03 | Play 1e -I didn't include 1e, or 2e, or any of the other rule systems that are out there, but, yes, they are also viable alternatives for the OP. |
