Seems they now revere Auril as she defeated Aerdrie Faenya and assimilated her worshippers. As a CE goddess, why would they revere her and not move to a different elven deity?

Thoughts?

More evidence that there was something slipped into the coffee at the office when they were working on that part? :D

Really though, that makes almost no sense to me... unless you go with the high-altitude usually being cold and snowy thing, but that seems like a really, really big stretch of logic to me. And not really indicative of the general mindset of the Avariel... not without a bit of a retcon anyway.

Hmm. I missed that part. That and an exarch she picked up from Ubtao has me doubting my initial delight with the article. It doesn't make much sense to me that Avariel would flock (sorry) to her, really. Perhaps they mean different followers... those um... non-flying-elf-ones also of good alignm... er...

hmm.

Well, then.

Aerdrie Faenya is part of Angharradh. This is canon.

Auril defeated Aerdrie Faenya and absorbed her. This is canon.

Angharradh still exists. This is canon.

Thus: only part of Aerdrie Faenya's essence was absorbed by Auril. So maybe a portion of those avariel that harbored evil intent turned to Auril and the rest remained true and faithful to Aerdrie Faenya (with Angharradh granting spells because Angharradh is 1/3 Aerdrie Faenya).

just don't ask about Sehanine Moonbow/Selune or Hanali Celanil/Sune. I haven't figured a rationale out for that yet that works with all canon sources.

where is the problem guys? it says that these particular avariel ( not ALL avariel) that live in the ( *dum*dum*dum*) divine realm of auril , revere her...
and dont forget that bit of information ( new as i didnt read elsewehre..) that auril is the queen of air and darkness...the FEY queen of the unseelie court...
so it isnt a great stretch to say tha some avariel ( as fey creatures that they are) always where devoted to her

To me it seems likely that the Avariel peoples as a whole have not switched faith to Auril. It just has not been long enough for a full racial switch of that magnitude. This specific nest was likely loose in its morality to begin with and corrupted to Auril through impersonation and manipulation. Not an uncommon trick for evil deities. I do not recognize the location of this, is this perhaps near Sossrim where a relatively benign aspect of Auril has been worshiped?

EDIT: Nevermind, this is an extraplanar realm. So yes, these are obviously corrupted Avariel and not necessarily representative of the race as a whole. Just those of weak hearts who turned to Auril when she managed to siphon from the faith of Aerdie.

Auril getting more spotlight strikes the right cord with me.

Her getting more power of the elements of air and storms is interesting, as it will greatly expand her active region of influence, unlike the old days when she was tied solely to the northern regions.

Her expanded domain clearly has an attractive side to it... with snowy realms holding a crystalline city within an flying iceball filled with petitioners and libraries. These could have beckoned for the avariel dwelling there now.

And to add to this confusion Aerdrie Faenya was revealed (see Evereska FRCS pg.130) to be a manifestation of Akadi...who is very much alive and around in the Realms according to the FRCS-list of divine/primordial beings. This is canon...

I actually didn't get the impression from the article (which I did not actually care for, btw) that all avariel or even most avariel now revere Auril.

The confusion can be easily resolved. If Aerdrie was indeed an aspect of Akadi, Auril could still have at some point defeated Akadi when she was in the Aerdrie guise, and then Auril could then have won the right to the Aerdrie alias and absorbed that contingent of Akadi's worship.

From her worshipers' point of view, Auril killed Aerdrie. From Akadi's perspective, she suffered a defeat from Auril and surrrendered/lost access to, her Aerdrie aspect.

Gods are particularly susceptible to what mortals believe about them, so myths and stories about gods can alter those gods' realities once those stories become widespread.

For instance, the heresy about Lathander turning into Amaunator was successful enough that it triggered the change in Lathander himself.

-The FRCS says on this, specifically, "Though confusion accompanied the revelations that Hanali Celanil was in fact the Elven aspect of the goddess Sune and that Aerdrie Faenya was none other than the primordial Akadi..."

Yes, I have read that in the FRCG. But if you read it carefully, you can see that there are many ways to interpret that lore. What does it mean by "revelations?" Does it mean divine visions? Or did Akadi just start telling people she was Aerdrie? Or did some sage figure it out, like Sherlock Holmes? "She's Elementary, my dear Watson!";) Regardless of the nature of these "revelations" you have to take into account whether these reports are accurate or some cover story or a partial truth.

If Akadi is indeed Aerdrie, was she always Aerdrie all along? Or did she subsume the "Aerdrie" persona after defeating her some how. If so how recently? It is possible that Aerdrie has never had an actual presence on Toril. When Corellon first interloped to Toril from another Crystal Sphere, or the Feywild or wherever he came from, maybe Aerdrie was unable to follow. Elves who cried out to Aerdrie may have had their prayers answered by Akadi who adopted her alias in order to serve her followers in Toril and draw power from their prayers.

Alternatively, Aerdrie may have originally been an aspect of Syranita, a patron goddess of the Aearee, who may have transformed herself into an elven aspect to keep from dying when the Aearee were wiped out, but then later became absorbed into Akadi.

Or maybe Auril did kill off Aerdrie, and then Akadi, seeing an opportunity to snatch the alias for her own, started to spread the "revelation" that Akadi was Aerdrie. If people buy into it, then Akadi might be able to steal the worship of Aerdrie's followers, even if Auril actually slew Aerdrie. An offense that Auril will not let go unpunished again, I'm sure. After all, Auril has slain a primordial before, she could do it again...

Ultimately there is no conflict between Brian's article and the FRCG. There is no reason why both cannot be true. You just have to read between the lines.

Nope, don't like the idea to begin with, so, dismissively, it's all just convoluted and contradictory clap-trap brought on by youngster designers and developers, who have no respect for their elders, push little old ladies into oncoming traffic, eat kittens for fun and amusement, and who beat baby seals. And those are their good points. ;) :D

Seriously though, its stuff like this that makes me long for the uncertain narrator of 2e days so that stuff like this could be more easily ignored and dismissed in discussions...
