Avengers and Deities?

I was just wondering, are there any Faerunian deities that the Avenger doesn't really "fit" with?

I'm having a bit of trouble visualising an Avenger of Ilmater... although it would probably fit better than a heavily armoured Paladin of the same.

Similarly, Paladins of Sune are easy to see, while Avengers (who would typically dump CHA) are a bit more elusive.

Avenger's of Oghma are almost something of a contradiction, where the deity is one that seeks to preserve knowledge, while an Avenger by definition is a destroyer, rather than a protector.

Finally we get the Avenger of Gond??? I don't even try to think of that one.

I suppose one could construct a militant sect for any of the deities and staff it with fanatical types (i.e. Avengers and Paladins)... but is that really the answer?

Conversely, of course, there are some faiths that scream out to be filled with frothing zealots... Kelemvor, Tempus and Lolth to name only a few... but what about the more "protective" faiths?

I agree that there are some deities where it is difficult to imagine an avenger serving them. I do find it an exiting class and a shoe-inn for all evil deities - would be a fascinating villain for a campaign.

Eh, I say leave it up to the player if he thinks the character works with the deity, myself. People can justify a lot of things to themselves when properly motivated.

Guardians of Wonder
This sect of fanatic Gondars hunt down misusers and thieves of Gond's wonders. They have the task to stop widespread use of smokepowder weapons. They travel the Realms by land, sea and air carrying the very weapons they hunt down, by uncovering secret caches containing the copies of each wonder a Gondar has made, to eventually bring the vandals or thieves to justice with their own weapons.

I agree that not all deities should have avangers, just like not all deities had paladins or druids in the previous edition. That said, most churches could make good use of sneaky zealots trained to hunt down their foes. Kossuth's Black Flame Zealots, Darkmasks of Vhaeraun, Strifeleaders of Cyric, even some Doomguides or Kelemvor. But most other deities can be explained.

Oghma may be the god of knowledge, but he did have the Trickery domain in 3rd edition, and allowed for clerics of any alignment (even the three evil ones), as long as they are willing to help ideas spread freely. And oghmanyte avenger could be really useful to hunt down the church's worst enemies, the followers of Leira, Mask, Talos, or Cyric. Except that the first two are now dead, the faith of Talos has declined since he was revealed to be an aspect of Gruumsh, and the same happened to Cyric's when he was emprisonned in his own plane. It's a good time to be a follower of Oghma, I'd say.

As for avangers of LG deities, how are they different from 3.5's Shadowbane Stalkers, or Slayers of Domiel?
