What's the best area of Faerun to set up a stronghold from which you can raise an army to conquer the rest of Faerun? I was thinking it's got to be remote enough to be unnoticed in the early stages (before Netheril, Thay, and the heartlands get involved), but populated enough to raise the army, and strategically located, with resources available to pull it off.

Also, what class would be best? I'm thinking wizard for the minion sweeping aspect, but maybe warlord would be better fitting for a warlord?

-One of the Border Kingdoms would be my guess.

Impiltur: It's got a history as a unified kingdom, but it wasn't one that regularly got involved in foreign adventures so few people would expect it to do so now. An adventurer who gradually restores order in the kingdom is going to make themself popular with the people, and it was a pretty wealthy place. There are some neighbouring regions that aren't in too good a state as well, and an invasion of Damara to overthrow the current ruler would probably attract some support there. Then there's the kingdom in the Vast, which is new and possibly not entirely secure itself. You're also adjacent to the Sea of Fallen Stars, which would make overseas expansion possible later but which would discourage foreign invasion.

Damara: Although it's still unified, the king is generally regarded as a usurper. You've got scope to expand into Impiltur and Vaasa, and there's a history of adventurer's taking the throne.

Most other places I ould suggest lack in some significant way. Effectively you're asking for a place that's wealthy, populous, and possible to take from it's current rulers. They aren't common. Possibly the Moonshaes, or you might try something in the Northern Sword Coast area - Luskan or Neverwinter refounded.

-Yeah, that's what I was going to suggest.

-As for what class is best...That depends on what you want the kingdom to be like. A Cleric-King/Queen could turn the place into a Theocracy. A Wizard-King/Queen could turn the place into a Magocracy. A Fighter-King/Queen could turn the place into a brutal Dictatorship. Whatever you want.

Seconded.

Anyway, as to the topic question, there are all kinds of places to set up a barony. The question of what place would be a great "jumping off" spot to conquer the rest of Faerun is a bit more complicated. You could try to just take over an existing kingdom and go from there (as I believe was suggested before).

-Impiltur is a great idea. The people would love a Demon Slaying Warlord. One that free's the people from the yoke of Demon Oppression. :D

-Oh, what do you know? Everyone loves being repressed by Demons. It makes you strong.
