Anyone have an idea as to what part of Faerun would be closest to Brazil (in culture and geography)?

I've been thinking that area next to Chult may be good... Although I cannot remember its name at the moment.

-Not Faerûn, but Maztica!

-Maztica was "teleported away" by the Spellplague, though, so...The FRCG seemed to retool the new Chult with (as I saw it) a slightly Central American-influenced theme, so...

Maztica is strongly based around Mesoamerica and South America, though I don't know much about it or Brazil, and couldn't say for certain.

Samarach, Thindol, Tashalar and Lapaliiya are the lands east of Chult.

Those nations always struck me more as the Realms-equivalent of the Barbary States.

As for Brazil, the closest, I would imagine, is 'New Amn', which is now off on another world, unfortunately.

Well, I play 3.5/before the Spellplague so Maztica is still in existence!
So, would Tashalar work alright too? I'm not sure if I want to zip them all the way to another continent.

-All the better, then.

-Though, in 4e, Maztica still technically exists. We just don't know...you know, where it went, what happened to it, how things are, and those little details. ;)

-But, anyway, Maztica is where you'll find the MOST allusions to Central and South America. In other places on Faerûn, things can be interpreted such that places can seem Mesoamerican, but ultimately, Maztica is still the hot spot.

My saying they remind me of the Barbary States is just my interpretation.

YOU are controlling your game, and your version of Toril, ergo YOUR Tashalar could be an exact copy of Brazil.

Go for it.

Probably the continent south of Maztica would be most similar to South America, I'm thinking. It's not clear if that continent went away when Maztica was replaced by Returned Abeir.

Maztica is more Central America/Mexico, while the continent to its south would reasonably be similar to South America.

Hey guys, im brazilian.

I must say that i dont feel like anything in Faerun is even similar to Brazil culturally and demographically.

New Amn could have some similarities due to the new world colonization thing theme.

-Brazil is a unique blend of Europe and South America, and since there isn't anyplace on Abeir-Toril that represents a fusion of certain parts of Faerûn and Maztica, there isn't going to be anything 100% like it, culturally. Not yet, anyway, though with Maztica in the trash for so long now, it was likely no such place would ever manifest.

Hey guys, I'm brazilian and i have to say that Maztica it's good if you're thinking in pré-colombian south américa. With a indiginous flavor or something like that. Brazil as a country after the 1700s has no counterpart in faerun. There are no colonized states in the campaing setting, so it's dificulty to find somewhere that mix two different cultures as South Américan countries are.

-If Amn's colonies in Maztica were given more time to develop, we might have seen such a thing.

-Alright, let me rephrase that, then: If Amn's colonies in Maztica were given more time to develop in a capacity that we'd be able to know of them, we might have seen such a thing.

If we can get Dragon Magazine articles about Returned Abeir, why can't we get Dragon Magazine articles about Returned Toril? ;)

Anyone other then me wondering why all the 'Realmslore' articles on the DDi have to do with Abeir, and nothing to do with Toril (other then thats where those pieces of Abeir are located these days)?

Akanûl , anyone?

If it wasn't for Brian's two, I'd swear they pasted the FR logo onto some other world...

Oh... wait...

Hey you know thats a hell of an idea. I dont think they will do anything with Returned Toril, which means its entirely in the hands of us gamers. We could do whatever we wanted with the world and there would be no official source book or whatever coming out completly changing they way you had things set up. I think the next Realms adventure i run i will have the characters on Maztica during the spellplauge and have then all wind up in this alternate world. You could keep the Realms flavor but do it your way. Maybe thats where all the missing gods ended up too. I'm likin this idea more and more.
What about Zakhara? I havnt heard anything about it. Did it get sucked off to Abeir too?

It's quite possible, given that nothing was ever seriously done with it.

-Nothing in the books said that Zakhara is gone, so we should assume it's still there until further notice.

It was plopped into the corner of Toril to gather dust. So, yes, that was unserious. :P

;)

True. One can only wonder, though, if they have any plans involving it, if it is indeed still around. Then again, if they did decide to keep it around, they must have at least one idea about how to breathe life into it (because it seems like those areas they couldn't find ideas for were ripped out or destroyed).

-Oh, feh, al-Qadim was a great setting. That is was randomly tacked on to Abeir-Toril shouldn't diminish the great amount of detail and work that went into it. If Kara-Tur had been designed with as much care as Zakhara had been, that'd be awesome. But, alas...

-Just like during the 3e era (for the most part), it's much easier to just ignore it as much as possible than go out of your way to do something about it, to make it go away. Out of sight, out of mind.

I'm not knocking it. In fact, that's kind of my point. They had an opening, they could have implemented it more effectively by giving it some spotlight (or to be blunt, throwing it a bone every now and again), but they didn't. Seems a waste (hence my previous statement that nothing was seriously done with it in regards to giving it attention on Toril).

I guess I still have Maztica fresh on my mind. Personally, I felt that Maztica (while a great deal more controversial) had every right to stay as Zakhara or Kara-Tur. We know Maztica's been glued onto Old Abeir and that Kara-Tur is still around (if in bad shape), but Zakhara is a toss-up. Like Maztica, Zakhara isn't attached to mainland Faerun, so it's not difficult to send it packing. It's easy to keep it out of the spotlight, but over time, more people will keep asking about its state. I just wonder if, were they to eliminate it, they would do so in a clandestine manner. No real detail or limelight; a spokesman designer just one day says "Zakhara's not here anymore", and the floodgates open (but the designers have had time to get to high ground by delaying it).

-There were plenty of ties, but too many of them are/were tenuous. You'll have mentions of a character being descended from Zakharan pirates here, or you'll have mentions of Zakharan weapons being used there, but the ties weren't all that strong, no, even in the heyday of 2e products, when everything was churning and being put into stores. I don't really know if, overall, that helped or hurt the setting, as a whole. Too much incorporation into Faerûn would make it lose some of it's flavor, but not enough, and, well...You have something that's too alien and disjointed, in relation to the rest of the planet.

-Maztica still has me scratching my head. A place that was cited as being the epitome of random places that don't have much to do with the Forgotten Realms, being plopped into the setting, for name and brand recognition is removed, and replaced with...a place that (as of right now) doesn't have much to do with the Forgotten Realms, being plopped into the setting, for name and brand recognition! Genius! Really is.

-I don't think Zakhara will get the "Maztica treatment" because, underneath everything, al-Qadim had a lot more depth and 'personality' than Maztica ever had.

The latter is why I fear at least one of the designers might by sharpening his axe and donning a black hood.

Agreed. Also, that annoying "Oh, it's too close to the real world!" thing, the same one that resulted in Unther being smushed by Tymanther and Mulhorand getting zapped into (and I presume here) Old Abeir.

--I don't think Zakhara will get the "Maztica treatment" because, underneath everything, al-Qadim had a lot more depth and 'personality' than Maztica ever had.

Hope you're right. I think with the whole century jump, they could definitely come up with a reason for Zakhara to have garnered more attention and grown so much that it stands out (at least, to potential players). If not, there's a lovely burial plot next to Maztica, shaded by an oak tree, on a hill overlooking a duck pond. But I really hope the latter never comes to pass.
