| #1norrinSep 16, 2008 23:46:59 | I'm starting in a FR campaign this weekend and I can not for the life of me decide what rogue type/race to play. All I know is I would like to play a Bugbear rogue or Drow rogue. Thanks for the advice in advance. |

Anyway, I accept that favored class fact as a rule and I don't care much more. For me, I'd prefer a drow rogue, but that +2 LA gives me the creeps a bit. Bugbear has racial Hit Dice and some adjustment as well, so I think there isn't a great improvement. I think I'd would prefer a drow rogue (though I'm beginning to be a bit tired of the drow, by the way). |

I know my thread was independent of any others being made. I'd say a big question is, is this a 3e game or a 4e one? Having said that what sort of character do you want to play? The loyal, not very intelligent rogue or the sly rogue whose trying to redeem himself? Or is there another type of character you have in mind? I always think of the roleplay aspect and make my decisions on mechanics from there. |

| #6norrinSep 17, 2008 14:57:08 | The game I'm starting in is 4ed* |
| #7rauricSep 17, 2008 20:12:10 | In 4E there is a drow feat that lets you get d8s on a hand held crossbow and they get darkvision plus they get drow powers that help them hide and gain combat advantage. The bugbear can wield daggers larger than normal daggers for a med being plus they get an extra dmg dealing racial that is used with combat advantage. Is this a mechanical question or a lore/fluff based one? Is it is about mechanics then this thread should be moved to Runnin the Realms I think. |

| #9Splurch1Sep 18, 2008 14:51:31 | For pure damage a Bugbear rogue is optimal but its hard for me as well to play a big goblin like that as a rogue. I am playing a drow rogue right now in one of the games I'm in and it is great fun so far, globe of darkness is great for combat advantage and with the new feats in FRPG it will be even better. But I am also playing an evil character or at least one without morals. We were told to make a character that would be sucked into a (deathtrap dungeon kinda location) and a to create a back story of why we would get the attention of some other worldly figures. I went with a drow who temps fate by stealing artifacts from temples of Lloth. Its been fun and a really good character and with high charisma sly flourish is unstoppable. Now if I can just keep my meat shield "oops I mean allies alive" I'll be in good shape. |

Bugbears have perfect stats for the former, while the drow's bonus make them well suited for the latter. Regarding personalities, both races tend to produce chaotic evil, individualistic characters, though perhaps moreso in the case of the drow. A bugbear brawny rogue is probably going to use its brute size to get what it wants, and maybe a good short sword stabbed deep into your kidney when that fails, dealing lots of damage and disabling his foes easily. The drow trickster rogue wouldn't lower himself to such crude methods, instead using speed and deception to overcome his foes. As an added mechanical note, remember that only drow have darkvision. If you campaign is likely to have the characters spend a lot of time underground, this might be a great advantage. |
