The plot sequences literally repeat themselves with slightly different variations in events, but the characters are all running around in circles with no real development. We got the heroes sneaking into the palace, then being chased back out. RINSE AND REPEAT for 18 chapters! I can see why Manshoon was getting headaches. I'm at the point of just chucking it aside and start Salvatore's Neverwinter, which btw hooked my interest with the first paragraph alone. -________________- Is the end really worth it? |
| #618DELTAOct 07, 2011 23:28:17 | The end is worth all of the keystone cops sequences you have to read. I enjoyed the novel. |

The Realmslore revelations, particularly toward the end of the book, finally answered some old questions many a Realms fan has wondered about over the last two decades. I was tempted to play the cynic and view the 4E tie-ins at the end as something an editor put in and not Ed, but since they came on the heels of the previously mentioned revelations I took a step back and had to say, “Yeah, it all fits. This is actually pretty awesome!” Beware, players of Warlocks in the Realms! You know not what you do! I came to this series books with this one. However, I think I’ll still find the time to read Elminster Must Die. If it’s anything like Bury Elminster Deep, it’ll be worth the read. |

Word! Okay, I finished the book. Advice to all who did not yet read it but want to: save yourself 30 agonizingly redundant chapters and just skip to the last 5. You won't miss a thing. And the ending wasn't even that awesome. Or at least it wasn't worth what I had to go through to reach it. SPOILER beware: Mystra and Azuth allowed a group of spellcasters to go about imprisoning people in magical items, whose life energy would then feed the mages' longevity. These arcanists were called the Imprisoners, chief among them being the infamous lich, Larloch. Nine such items exist now, each binding a "blue-flame ghost" that does the bidding of whoever controls said items. One of the item, a handaxe, held Mirt the Moneylender. He is now free and promptly hid the handaxe. Five were recovered by Cymmarra, a betrayed minion/mage of Manshoon's and accidentally cursed by Elminster long ago. One remains in the Obarskyr's possession, the ghost of the Steel Regent to be exact. At the end of the book, another was found and fed to the Simbul to heal her madness. That makes it a total of 8. I think the 9th formerly held Laeral before Blackstaff freed her. I'm not sure. Anywho ... Storm, El, his descendent and her paramore healed Alassra, who in turn resurrected El and then explained everything. Mystra is alive as a vestige, hidden, waiting for all the blue-flame items to be recovered and a new Weave made. That's what I felt was implied anyway. But before this can be accomplished, they must heal the planar rifts/portals created by Larloch, using the blue-flame items to do so. El and Manshoon must work together to do this. Manshoon of course says yes for the Simbul's benefit, then "destroys" El after she leaves. |
| #10sfdragonOct 12, 2011 22:13:56 | Alassara be the next mystra. I asked Ed something on that lines a while back. three letters was my reply NDA of course the other part of my question was more or less something else. no I'm not going to link it, I'm not foolish enough to go an use that site's monstrous search engine |
