How awsome would you feel if a character you created became the proverbial "Poster Child" for an entire D&D Campaign setting?

Here's to R.A. Salvatore and our friend Drizzt!!!

HERE HERE!!!!!

took the words right out of my mouth...

Seriously though, I think Drizzt is a fairly good choice. I'm not a huge fan of putting a character on the front and would have rather deen a book-esque cover as the 3rd editions had. Still, as has been said the Realms is all about the NPCs and they add most of the flavor to it. Drizzt is a logical choice. The only reason I dislike him is because every bad RPer and his dog wants to copy Drizzt in every way they can. It can get.... anoying.

It's probably a placeholder, but Rich Baker has said they are using Drizzt because he sells books. I paraphrase here, but every novel with him on the cover makes the NY times bestseller list so it obviously is attracting people.

Never mind found it on the FRCS forum.

Sigh. It turns out I've got to eat some crow.

The Drizzt piece is a placeholder for the catalog, we've actually got new art commissioned. It shows a shade knight flying on a wicked-looking dragon, wheeling over the towers of a dark fortress. Very nice piece.

My bad.

I liked Drizzt just fine before Salvatore turned him into the the whining emo posterboy he is today. No drow I ever played ever wasted a second agonizing over how utterly EVIL his people were, or ever gave a crap if they were ever accepted by the pallid tree kissing surface dwellers - - and that was the GOOD one! :p

I don't have a big problem with Drizzt, only with the people who copy him. He is just a drow version of your average 2d dull righteous lead, with the exception that he was actually interesting for a while, unlike many of his kind. Salvatore more than made up for any lackings Drizzt may have through Jarlaxle and Entreri though. Here's a cookie for creating those two.

Don't get me wrong I get annoyed by people who can't be creative and make their own charatcers. However, I don't mind Drizzt copies as much as some people. All in all the players are just trying to have fun and that's what the game is really about. I see people here toting sigs that say they ar hard-core 90% or storyteller 78%, but they all have Casual Gamer below 10%. Personally I can't be too serious when I play. It is just a game and anything that allows players to have fun is ok with me.

Drizzt is a panzy sissyboy. Anyone ever actually take a gander at his stat block? He's an appropriate challenge for the typical village scullery maids.

I kid, of course. You'd probably have to be at least 7th level to beat the snot out of him. Maybe it's just wishful thinking. But seriously, of all the changes in the Realms, they had to keep him alive?

Drizzt is a great poster child. First off, he's the most popular FR character. He's a sissy, but he's a popular sissy.

Secondly, he's an elf and therefore still alive 100 years later. He serves as a good bridge between the old and the new.

Drizzt is the perfect front for this. It infuriates the senses of those who wanted all the epic people dead (even though he's only level 18), it shows that some traditions live on.

Hey, he's also a great allegory for the hardcore Forgotten Realms readers: Like us, it looks like he lost everything he loves and had come to depend on over the course of 100 practically unwritten years.

I dont care what people say. I am am rebellious role player, and I say Drizzt pronounced DRITS. Thats right. If you dont believe that's how you pronounce it, why dont you check how Salvatore pronounces it in his interview {you can find it on youtube under Drizzt Do'Urden. And Salvatore's getting better, much better, especially after he got rid of that pathetic illistrator who drew Drizzt as an old man with a weird metal thing clampted around his forehead. I think Drizzt is definatly deserving the place on the cover. I too have seen it on ENworld, and I have to say i'm disappointed they might not keep it. I am yet to rread the orc king, and currently on The Two Swords, and have been a fan of it for a while. Oh, and i am yet to here the guys opinion who posted this thread. Is bwahaha happiness or sadness? Or will no one know? I am also thankful that Salvatore got rid of the crystal shard and stopped Drizzt and Entreri from their endless fighting {both were getting way to old}. I do understand the logical things about so much multiclassing, and the people's feelings who dont like Drizzt, but please, just let up on posting bad stuff on Drizzt threads. :P sych. I really dont care what u put on these threads. I am very happy liking Drizzt, because he is a fighter10/Barbarian1/Scout 3/Ranger of Meilekei 5. Yeah, somebody needs to fix those stats. ;)

The art WASN'T commisioned for the cover - it was originally for the miniatures boxes.

It is reused Artwork, and for that very reason I wouldn't want to see it as a cover-design. Re-using good artwork in the interior of a book is one thing, but covers should be ORIGINAL.

However, I think I'd rather see Drizzt, who only mildly annoys me, then a Shade, which I out-right despise and don't think belongs in FR AT ALL.

I wouldn't call him a cheater, because it's entirely possible that Salvatore decided to houserule "no XP penalties for multiclassing" when he did his 3.5 stats. If he did.

I know that's what I do in my campaigns, as do all my friends. Frankly I can't be arsed trying to calculate the XP penalties which seem to end up being ultimately meaningless anyway. I just imagine they don't exist at all. Basically everyone has "all" as their favored class, with the actual favored class provided solely for fluff purposes.

Not sure if I catch you correctly in your meaning, but, if so, then I agree and don't think you can expect much too change with the new FR. Sourcebooks are going to detail things in depth. Novels will begin on small scale, then grow to the god scale after a few years. The bigger the better, as they say. It'll all be as is within a few years.

As for Drizzt...well, from what I've heard of all classes being able to use magic and his infinity for being a sentimental dope (though I still love the character), it might be interesting to see how he turns out after a hundred years. R.A. may just take the character back to "The Hunter" to a degree with some new quirks added for flavor.

He's one of the few things surviving the reset button, why should anyone suspect that new FR will be any different.

-Any different from what? How they exist and appear now?

Not sure if I catch you correctly in your meaning, but, if so, then I agree and don't think you can expect much too change with the new FR. Sourcebooks are going to detail things in depth. Novels will begin on small scale, then grow to the god scale after a few years. The bigger the better, as they say. It'll all be as is within a few years.

-Asides for the physical and metaphysical changes to the setting (the geography, amount of deities, and their relations, and the timeline increase), most other changes are mostly smoke and mirrors, to give the appearance of a change.

Again, not sure if I understand you correctly, but, if so, then I agree on the smoke and mirrors thing.

Also, I would like to add that, as it has been brought up, Dragon Lance tried a similar thing.

It failed horribly.

They then brought back what was missing (at least in the novels).

Even if it is "killed," it can still be brought back--albeit, with a stain upon its reputation.

Dude--you seen the covers of R.A.'s books? They're never the same. Does he ever actually just carry a pair of scimitars?

Might as well as give him a pair of of letter openers.

The one where he is standing on the fence with scimitar in hand with guen in the background and a drow building lit with faeriefire behind guen. But digging through my Menzoberranzan books, I think the art on the cover of Book 2: The Houses might be better or even the same just on a larger scale.

if any character has ever been done to death in fantasy setting it's Drizzt. I'm so freaking sick of half elf rangers by now I'm thinking about writing a psychotic homocidal need to slay all half-elves, rangers and drow into all of my characters. Any combination thereof shall be slain and be lain to rest in a tribal orcish outhouse Any one fitting all three categories would undoubtedly send me into a murderous rage that couldn't be sated until I was relatively certain I'd killed everyone they ever knew.

Or I could probably get it out of my system is I just played one of them myself and made a point of dual wielding frozen salmon while constantly singing ballads to remind all who listen about the close romantic bond that all half-drow rangers feel for pyro-bova-necrophilia.
