| #1lord_karsusAug 27, 2008 20:11:17 | -Recently, it was found out that Calimport's population has dwindled to circa 60,000 or so, based on someone else's post. My question: What happened to the 130,000 other people (being as Calimshan's population hovered around 190,000)? Yes, 100 years have passed, but something is not matching up, even with what happened in those 100 years factored in. |
| #2GreenKnightAug 27, 2008 20:12:44 | They all went to Baldur's Gate? |
| #3rinonalyrna_fathomlinAug 27, 2008 20:14:43 | I'd like to know the answer, myself.![]() |
| #4Harn_WinterfellAug 27, 2008 20:23:48 | Simple answer. They were gnomes. |
| #5krownhunter07Aug 27, 2008 20:25:05 | I'll read up on it and post in a bit. |
| #6lord_karsusAug 27, 2008 20:25:51 | -The problem with that is that, statistically, Gnomes would have made up less than 1% of Calimshan's population, thus making those any present in Calimport, an extreme minority. |
| #7Charles_PhippsAug 27, 2008 20:27:23 | I believe that the implications are they all died, probably due to the abuses of the Gensai. Either that or they fled to the sea and never came back. |
| #8Dark_Wizard_02Aug 27, 2008 20:28:09 | The Spellplague killed them, maybe? |
| #9Charles_PhippsAug 27, 2008 20:29:30 | The simple answer... Adventurers. |
| #10GreenKnightAug 27, 2008 20:29:58 | Either that or they fled to the sea and never came back. Calimport had a large unicorn population? |
| #11lord_karsusAug 27, 2008 20:30:06 | -I'm just sayin', that's an awful lot of people to just "disappear". |
| #12krownhunter07Aug 27, 2008 20:31:37 | The second era of Skyfire greatly diminished the population. Humans are now subjugated under Genasi Masters who continue the war. |
| #13SoulCatcher78Aug 27, 2008 20:31:48 | War, famine, pestilence, and the oh so lovely shanty communities of Baldur's Gate. Since the restart of Skyfire (aka son of Skyfire), the two armies have been using slaves like they were going out of style but that's still a huge number to folks to have gone through. I guess those that were able took the first oppportunity to pull up stakes and leave town. |
| #14rinonalyrna_fathomlinAug 27, 2008 20:31:55 | I believe that the implications are they all died, probably due to the abuses of the Gensai. What genasi? I'm out of the loop here.:P |
| #15SoulCatcher78Aug 27, 2008 20:33:25 | The bad Genasi (the ones that use slaves) now inhabit Calimport and Memnon (sp?). |
| #16rinonalyrna_fathomlinAug 27, 2008 20:34:12 | The bad Genasi (the ones that use slaves) now inhabit Calimport and Memnon (sp?). Oh I see. Can you give me any more detail? |
| #17Charles_PhippsAug 27, 2008 20:34:21 | The story basically boils down to this. Fuji the Samurai was sitting outside of a tavern when Barrelfist the Dwarf got into a drinking contest. Lisa the Rogue was picking pockets as usual, she then rolled a 1 and was caught. Well, Barrelfist immediately errupted to her defense and being rowdy drunk, everyone else, got into it. Well the watch was called and they attacked with lethal weapons, so our crusading heroes responded, killing most of them. Well, now a dozen watch were dead and that's a lot worse crime than rowdiness, so they assembled the Calimport army. The player characters, justifying this as Calimport was evil, then proceeded to attack them from group to group for the EXP. Andrea, the Necromancer, eager to try out her newest spell idea then got the piles and piles of scarab corpses she'd been buying and dipping in poison. Then she cast Animate Dead on them, leading to a swarm attack as she told them to attack the guards. Well, that's a dumb thing to give to mindless undead and they started killing and moving through Calimport like a plague as the PCs watched on in horror. Ultimately, about two thousand died there, as the PCs decided to get rid of the problem by burning down all the areas that the insects might be hiding. Justifying a swarm like that was a major problem. This, according to the DM rolling two twentues caused the entire lower ward to catch fire and killed about twenty thousand. ....Then things got really bad. To cut out the middle men, the player characters decided to raise a horde of Demons from the Nine Hells in order to get rid of the summoned Genies and then unleashed the Seven Sisters to attack the Demons and that's actually how most of the Chosen died. After that, they tricked the retarded Lawful Good Halfling Hireling to breaking the Staff of the Magi over his knee in order to do a retributive strike at the heart of the city. The player characters claim this fixed all the problems and is why they should keep their LG alignments. |
| #18lord_karsusAug 27, 2008 20:36:05 | What genasi? -You should see THISthread. |
| #19krownhunter07Aug 27, 2008 20:40:03 | -You should see THISthread. Ehh, it says here that the decrease in people is due to the war, not the water level. |
| #20red_wizardAug 27, 2008 20:40:20 | The spell plague released Calim and Memnon, the Efreet and Djinn lords of old. With them came many Genasi, and in turn others flocked to the call, or rose up from hiding. The humans were overwhelmed, slaughtered and taken into slavery. There is one Human city left, and the two (Calim and Memnon) have vanished once more. The Genasi still fight on in their names, but there is little for them to different in one another anymore. -RW |
| #21lord_karsusAug 27, 2008 20:44:00 | Ehh, it says here that the decrease in people is due to the war, not the water level. -No it doesn't. It simply says that the population that was 190,000 is now 60,000, and that the city is now landlocked. |
| #22krownhunter07Aug 27, 2008 20:59:10 | I'm talking about the FRCG, PG 98, first paragraph under Calimport... |
| #23lord_karsusAug 27, 2008 21:02:26 | -I thought you were referencing the link you quoted. |
| #24rinonalyrna_fathomlinAug 27, 2008 21:06:10 | -You should see THISthread. I did, thank you. ![]() |

Thanks for the extra information. |
| #26krownhunter07Aug 27, 2008 21:12:17 | -I thought you were referencing the link you quoted. oops, sorry, I was trying to correct it. |
| #27quale_Aug 28, 2008 2:15:24 | actually 190 000 was without the slaves, you have to add 1 300 000 slaves, various foreign visitors and traders at any given time of the year the population was 95 % human, 2 % halfling, 3 % other |
| #28gabethAug 28, 2008 2:39:12 | I'll just add that Almraiven is now the sole human settlement in Calimshan. Memnon is controlled by Memnon and his forces while Calimport belongs to Calim and his folks, effectively altering the environment even further with their battle magics. The Calim Desert is bigger, the Spider Swamp dried up, Suldolphor was turned into sand, and Calim and Memnon have returned to their home planes, leaving their generals in charge of the war. Good times, heh. |
| #29zananAug 28, 2008 2:54:51 | Well, maybe Shar had another nasty book stored in the Temple of Old Night and someone read it aloud? |
| #30sfdragonAug 28, 2008 3:13:42 | what book, the only book of shar's penning that was there was: Shar's Black Book of Secrets. It was reputed to contain secrets of 5000 mortals who ended up bedded by Shar...... Including the band known as Death Klok |
| #31KhaeliethAug 28, 2008 3:36:29 | I don't see the problem. Rome's (the city) population fell even faster, if my memory serves me, due to much the same thing; strife. EDIT: Bane should be a very, very happy bunny! |
| #32Charles_PhippsAug 28, 2008 9:25:37 | Cyric is god of strife. |
| #33fodiggAug 28, 2008 14:48:49 | My understanding is the genasi "skyfire" war. |
| #34zananAug 28, 2008 18:25:08 | what book, the only book of shar's penning that was there was: The Twilight War trilogy (two books out so far) and the novel Mistress of Night tells us about a book written by Shar('s minions) and some pages of it, the Leaves of One Night. Collecting them enables a devotee of Shar to summon the Shadowstorm. Guess why the second novel is called Shadowstorm ... |
| #35lord_karsusAug 28, 2008 22:47:21 | actually 190 000 was without the slaves, you have to add 1 300 000 slaves, various foreign visitors and traders at any given time of the year -Heh, I didn't even realize that that number was not factoring in slaves...That's a lot of people... |
| #36ikkiAug 29, 2008 2:26:14 | -You should see THISthread. ??!!??Guess i was really badly out of the loop.. comp breaking a month off to the wilderness etc.. Sharn: The race is now considered Chaotic Evil, and they exist to spread lingering pockets of Spellplague across Faerûn, as the hidden masters of the Order of the Blue Flame. Riiight.. |
| #37zananAug 29, 2008 3:06:17 | @ ikki ... that's a fluke, ain't it? Regarding Calimport ... maybe there was another Night War that we do not know about. The last one cost them 70,000 humans in dead and missing. Just as food for thought. |
| #38lord_karsusAug 29, 2008 10:48:06 | Regarding Calimport ... maybe there was another Night War that we do not know about. The last one cost them 70,000 humans in dead and missing. Just as food for thought. -You'd expect someone to tell us about such an event...No...Wait...Never mind... |
| #39krownhunter07Aug 29, 2008 10:49:57 | ...The second era of Skyfire... |
| #40ikkiAug 29, 2008 12:38:08 | ...The second era of Skyfire... and if 200k are down to 60k, then presumably the 1,3 million slaves have suffered ATLEAST as much. Likely more, being dependant. Or down by ~9/10 to 150K. Guess there are a lot of empty buildings now.. |
| #41Kensan_OniAug 29, 2008 16:32:33 | Really, this isn't too hard to figure out. Calashim is still in War. What's the population of any city while there is a war going on? |
| #42gun_smoked_kissAug 29, 2008 16:35:41 | -Recently, it was found out that Calimport's population has dwindled to circa 60,000 or so, based on someone else's post. Yes, 100 years have passed, but something is not matching up, even with what happened in those 100 years factored in. Artemis was working over-time on his shift ;) Err...this is the same city with his midget half-ling friend right? Pasha pook too or something? If I'm right, didn't he say he was going back to that city? I never understood why he left Jarlaxell, he was helping him more then the girl with the half-ling assasins was. Meh |
| #43lord_karsusAug 30, 2008 11:30:07 | Calashim is still in War. What's the population of any city while there is a war going on? -Calimshan is a country. Calimport is the city we're talking about. That said, let's take a city that's currently embroiled in war. Kabul. War's been going on there for almost seven years now. The population of the city hasn't plummeted dramatically. Now, obviously, circumstances in Kabul are a lot different than circumstances in Calimport, but that's a massive drop in population. |
| #44entombmentofamachineAug 30, 2008 11:40:42 | -Calimshan is a country. Calimport is the city we're talking about. That said, let's take a city that's currently embroiled in war. Kabul. I don't remember a war going on in the sell swords series...just a bunch a mobs trying to vye for power. I consider that alley wars at most. If there was a war, Jarlaxell would have taken full advantage of it. |
| #45msatranAug 30, 2008 11:50:40 | Yeah. For me, this Calimshan was a 4E dealbreaker too. You cannot seriously expect me to believe that these creatures appear whole hog and ready for battle. The Syl-Pasha El-Parsekhal was hardly an idiot, and he did have an army and the best Navy in the world. If I were he, to counter this threat, I would have done the following, considering that I am Neutral Evil: 1) Oh, look, my mages guild has 25+ Archmagi. Who cares how many of them fail their sanity checks? Just cast destructive spells until they go mad, and level the Genasi and Genie threat. 2) Arm the slaves and offer them their freedom. The Genies want to kill them anyway (Or at least, that's what you tell them). The only ones you have to worry about are the ones that survive, which will be few, because you just give them a weapon and minimal armor. You appear to be magnanimous, but hell, you'll have a whole bunch of enslaved genasi if you win. 3) I run every thieves guild in town. Assassinate! Assassinate! Assassinate! It only takes an 8th level rogue to pretty much guarantee someone being murdered in their sleep, and that's not too hard. 4) Hire the Flaming Fists. For an extraplanar threat, they'll come and take good coin. 5) Utterance of the words "I wish" is punishable by death. And that's just for starters. Really, there's no reason the genies would be able to win except to grant wishes to stupid people and warp them. |
| #46zananAug 30, 2008 11:51:36 | -You'd expect someone to tell us about such an event...No...Wait...Never mind... ... just presenting "good" ideas to the designers of the Forgotten Years, of course. ![]() |
| #47lord_karsusAug 30, 2008 11:52:51 | -I think you're underestimating Calim and Memnon. In theory, being as the two could communicate with others, they could have been setting all of the pieces for their escape in place for years, and were prepared when it finally happened. |
