Splitting off from the Mystra thread, starting a new topic about Calimshan and its place in the Realms, both pre- and post-spellplague.

that was my opinion of it... even from just the little bit I read of it in the drizzt series.

just seamed like a place where a rogue could master his skills.

Ah yes, good ol Calimshan. Had a campaign centered around Calimport, i really tried to give it that Arabian Nights vibe, the rich and flying carpets, all that stuff. I especially like the Muzad, I think thats what it was called, kinda like UNdermountain/Underdark of Calimport, we had some good time there let me tell ya.
That 2e Calimport sourcebook they did was prettyu good, full of lots of fluff, I miss books like that, sigh. I believe its still available as a free Download: poleandrope.blogspot.com/2010/07/working...

As for Calimshan now, IM not sure about, Not alot to go on in the 4e FRCG, I guess its more or less the same, except Calim and Memmnom or who ever are free now, and theres more of an elemental presence, more Genasi and whatnot, but I guess that makes some since for it to have stong Elemental ties, I mean the people freakin speak Fire Elemental, I guess it would be Primordial by 4e Standards?

Can't say I'm too enthused about the 4e Calimshan... it was always a good source for random villains to toss in the way of a group of adventurers, especially since it could lead to some interesting intrigues later on with power vacuums to be filled, and some pasha or other finding the party a useful tool to dispose of unwanted rivals by sending them hints and tips about his rivals while steering them away from his own concerns.  Or, alternatly, just for those throwaway encounters that didn't and weren't supposed to lead anywhere... was kinda like Bad-Guys R' Us for me.

Well, during the Year of Rogue Dragons, “Sharp Fangs”, a blue great wyrm, shatters the eastern tower of the Twin Towers of the Eclipse, flying south to assault Calimport. In Calimport Sharp Fangs unleashes her wraths on the Plaza of Divine Truth. During a battle with temple defenders she shatters the legendary Idol of Bhaelros, thus triggering an ancient prophecy. An aspect of Bhaelros manifested in the middle of a court yard astride an enslaved Great Brass Wyrm causing a battle that destroys most of the Palace Ward (with the notable exception of the Pasha’s Sabban) before Sharpfangs is finally driven off, her fury spent. The aspect of Bhaelros went on wreaking havoc upon Calimport. The syl-pasha’s army battle the raging deity for 3 days. At the defeat of Bhaelos the enraged defeated deity retaliated by raining lighting bolts upon Calimshan for a year there after. By the end of The Year of Lighting Storms, Calimport and other cities regained a measure of traditional independence because of the weakened sly-pasha’s rule.   That all spills from Dragons of Faerun.

I remember reading somewhere about a string of prophecies or visions that lead up to the return of Memnon (efreet), who was freed by Spellplague along with Calim (djinn).  The Second Era of Skyfire was the Time between Spellplague release of the eternal foes and 1450 DR when they mysteriously are sent back to their home plains.  Memnon and Calimport are mainly controlled by genasi, slavery being their main business.  These cities are dealing with the Almraiven a city of rebells and pirates whose population are the survivors and decendents of the horrid event.  Sounds like they have a WeavePasha and are doing what they did before in Calimport from another location.  This time they are focused on revenge.

It seems the Twisted Rune fell right in with the present rulers and are doing well with hundreds of unknowning agents and functioning portals that lead all over Faerun.

It sounds pretty much the same as before with a different ruler race in the major cities and the same old thugs (now would be rebels) out of Almraiven.

It would be nice to see what an almanac of their Trade System and Products looked like now.  Silk, Jewelery, Gems, Armor, Leather, Books, Ships, Pearls, Herbs, Pottery, and Rope were items of the the regions trade before Spellplague.  Are these products of the same quality now with slave labor.  What sanctions might other regions have on them now with open knowledge of Calimshan's open slave trade.

It has an other worldly color to Memnon and Calimport.  Its strange trying to picture the slums filled with genasi peasants.  Maybe they burn the slums and they are ruins...  Entreri has and comfortable pad there somewhere.  What might the relations be between Calimshan, Amn, Netheril, Baldur's Gate, and Waterdeep.

Populations  before vs after Spellplague

Calimport: 192,795 vs 60,000
Memnon:   29,101 vs 35,000
Almraiven:  43,652 vs 38,000
Suldolphor: 143,687 vs ruins....

I posed a compare and contrast because it's now left up to the DM, unless there is some new Novel material I haven't read or seen.  I know there are a lot of things with Waterdeep.  I've about ten pages of references from Forums here and Candelkeep, if I need a detail that's not from my collection of 1-3.5 editions.  I have enough to keep our games going but as far as Canon, it's very general and open to whatever I feel is important to the adventure.

I have noticed the players who use to DM 1 to 3.5 editions have not stepped up to the plate in awhile and now it seems easier with all the tools.  I whip out encounters and plots like throwing dirt clods trying to hit the side of a barn.  Always eager to read about more details, new intrigues, and events in Faerun.  But I've known Faerun for around 26 years and when the materials run low the Players start ruling areas and dealing with Power Groups, Fallen Gods, ancient Artifacts, and life quests again.

Sandstorm did alot to define the 4e Calimshan aka Skyfire emirates. Great novel," strong amount of realmslore but very tragic if you loved the old Calimshan.
