I am starting up an Epic level FR campaign, and the basis for it is that the players are member of the "Cartographer's Guild;" a guild a explorers and magic users who want to map and study the planes.

I came up with this a while back when I read about this organization in one of the books; However, I am having trouble finding the information I recall reading about. I could have sworn it was in the campaign setting book but I've been flipping through it for an hour and I am not finding what I am looking for.

Does this organization ring any bells with anyone? I know it had a different name and it might have been a society, not a guild... All I remember is that it was a group of people that want to explore and map the planes of existence, and I also remember that the item I read mentioned that it is a great hook for the players (which is why it stuck as one in my mind).

It's not TOO important, but if it's an official group in the setting, I would like to find the stats and information for the leaders of the organization and what city they are based out of.

Doesn't specifically ring a bell for me, but Waterdeep does have the Surveyors, Map & Chartmakers' Guild.  They have been known to buy maps of places on Toril....not as certain about other planar though.  If they had a customer, they might pay adventurers with the right skills to do some work.

I remember another guild that was something like what you want. HOWEVER, I took the book it was in to Hastings and sold it.
, the sourcebook was not even a FR, but the 3.0 Epic Level Handbook .

the guild in it seems like what you may be remembering  though.

I'd also have to tell you that if there is such a guild  that you want in the Realms, you will have to go to CAndlekeep.com and ask as the majority of the Lorehounds that would know still post there and you can ask Ed greenwood via the hooded one. this option might take a while
the only other thing I can say as wait for Mr. Miscillanious to come on and see if he knows or see if Silversword drops by and asks...

I have a few of the 3.x realms I'll go off and look and some abeit few of the add era.

none of the add era splatbooks had any info( really not suprised there)
the organizations in the 3.x FR splats that I have do not have any organization listed in it that matches mapping out the planes.

off to check the FR wiki

Ah! Thanks to this I was able to find it; it is indeed in the Epic Level Handbook. It's the Planar Cartographic Society on page 242 :D

Okay, I have been working on an 4E Realm game with the Realms and I am a old School Realms person and I once used Imvaernarhro (Inferno) as an NPC in the Realms in 3.5 and though it is much an aside from your subject and I am now delving into the Novels about the Year of Rogue Dragons, I do think this Red Ancient Great Wyrm might be an Expert when it comes to the Planes.  Elminster is known to have stated that this Dragon has several hordes stashed away throughout the Realms and with his touch to possibly what seems a Fey Wild link Cross Roads Etc, I can see that he may be an expert on the Realms Planar aspect.  Whether the Ancient Entity known as Imvaernarhro might still want to deal with mortals or if he still exist is possibly a dangerous or dasterly link to who knows what kind of back stories and intrigues.

Now, I am saying all of this on a hunch as I am enjoying Byers' Old Story on Sammaster which tech wise I know what happens, whether he touches on Inferno or not, I do not know.  My earlier use was to thwart the Cult of the Dragon in the Undermountain c.1374DR and also to pay some revenge on "Sharp Fangs" while she Raged in 3.5E, yet this Red Great Wyrm, may show his Colossus head in our epic 4E adventure if my readings do not tell me different over the next two or three weeks of reading.... Now even though there are no Colossus Dragons listed in 4E, I see no reason why they would not still exist!  Godly as they may seem at Level 33+(he was CR40 in 3.5 with 61HD, yes a DM's ultimate Killer who was Based in Star Mounts and High Forest which in my mind SCREAMS 4E Realm's Fey Wild.Laughing and if I had horns they would thrust in an angular sort of deathly fearful way emitting a strong hot sulfurus, in an eye burning haze!  But if Richard uses him, I would say, "okay that Dude knows", he is one of the Best!  But I am Reading and enjoy these old stories from Rage Rite etc to Griffon Tril and then to that wonderful Trilology I keep hearing so much about with Thay's "Haunted Lands" and the Dread Rings Godhood etc... I am a mess Tongue Out Colossus Must still Exist they were there in 1st Edition through 3rd Why Not 4E Epic upper crust.  These Dragons couldn't have just completely vanished because weak adventurers can't handle the truth!
