The gist of my problem: I know jack about Forgotten Realms. Eberron or Dragon Lance I'd be cool, but despite being a major setting, I know next to nothing, really, about the world of Forgotten Realms. I want to situate my character's backstory seamlessly within the world, but I don't know cities of nations or the political situations and I'd love it if someone could give me help making the character have a fully fleshed out background that fits the setting instead of "she comes from... this place." I also know that there is a derth of updated setting info for 5th edition, so I know there's going to be a lot of winging it, even if you're deep into FR, but as long as my character's origins sound plausible, I think I'll be alright.
Okay, here's a brief description of the character (a bard, by the way):
She is a half-elf born of a sun elf mother and human father. Her mother was of noble birth and she engaged n a brief liason with a human knight/soldier/whatever who left her to go fight a war that he never returned from (or he just ran out on her, depnding which family member is telling the story). Thus the character grew up in a noble environment, but as a bastard and a half-breed was looked down upon be the family at large with her mother her only unqualified supporter. Now entering adulthood (around age 18-22), she works as a diplomatic attache, spy and all-around trouble shooter for the family in their dealings with non-elf kingdoms/nations. This keeps their embarassment away from the court and out of their hair, while making use of her ease with humans and adventurous nature.
Alright, so there's the thumbnail sketch, now here's what I need:
-Some place for her to be from. I don't know any of the political divisions of FR, so is there an elven kingdom or city state that would fit her story? I am aware that roughly 150 years prior to the setting of Hoard of the Dragon Queen, most elves left Faerun for the continent of Evermeet, but is there a specific place where sun elves remained? I also know that Sun Elves began to return to Faerun during the era of Upheavels? Is there a named kingdom/city/region where sun elves have migrated back to at least 25 years prior to Hoard of the Drgon Queen (which is set some time if the mid-late 1480's)? Further, it would have to be someplace that'd have a logical reason to be having dealings in wherever it is Hoard of the Dragon Queen begins.
-Pointers on the sun elf courts if they're greatly different from the way human courts operate.
-Any other fluff regarding sun elf culture I should know. Again, I know next to nothing save a few scraps concerning the chronology and random stuff picked up on the FR wiki.
Alright, thanks in advance for any help! |

That city was an elven paradise, fell to a demon horde long ago, was liberated near 3.5/4e transition, became a citadel besieged, and wiped out agin 4e/5e. The family happened to be out of town on diplomatic business at the time, lucky for us.
