| #1cringer_luvrAug 17, 2008 19:43:25 | Dear Mr Perkins, I asked you a question at gen con about the 4th ed. Forgotten Realms setting involving Ao and why he did now interfere with the deicide that went on pre and post spellplauge, you informed me it was in the realms setting sidebar on Ao, which is not so, it only tells who Ao is, can you please shead light on this and what was supposed to be in this sidebar. thanks ![]() |
| #2lord_karsusAug 17, 2008 20:12:43 | -Chris Perkins does not peruse these boards. -That said, Rich Baker has stated that he* considered Ao a mistake, and that Ao's role was going to be minimized such that he receives a mention or two, but nothing else during the 4e era. -Anyway, many of the deities involved in the most "outrageous" decide- Mystra's- were simply performing their duties. Cyric, with his 'Murder' portfolio. Shar, with her 'Secrets' portfolio. A problem does arise, however, when the text says that Shar is preventing a new deity of magic from ascending. This does, indeed, seem to not be in her purview of duties, and in Ao's. However, because of the statements by Rich Baker, that Ao would seemingly step in is, and has, been ignored. Some would call it "plot armor". That is, in other words, ignoring a detail(s) such that the intended goal is accomplished by the writer/designer, no matter what. *This may or may not also be shared by the other designers who worked on the FRCG. |
| #3markustay63Aug 17, 2008 20:18:13 | Also this question would be better served in the "Ask the Designers" thread. ;) |
| #4merrikcaleAug 17, 2008 21:44:34 | For all my problems with the 4e setting, and they are numerous, the decision to minimize and all but eliminate Ao is not one. I too think he was a mistake |
| #5sfdragonAug 17, 2008 21:52:02 | can I have AO killed?? |
| #6lord_karsusAug 17, 2008 23:11:35 | For all my problems with the 4e setting, and they are numerous, the decision to minimize and all but eliminate Ao is not one. I too think he was a mistake -Why do you say that? I've never hard any particular love for Ao or anything, but I've never disliked Ao, either. He's certainly not an anathema to the setting to me, like Ao is to others. can I have AO killed?? -No. |
| #7quale_Aug 18, 2008 5:50:43 | Ao died during ToT (in our world) |
| #8KhaeliethAug 18, 2008 5:58:28 | How many levels does Ao have? |
| #9lord_karsusAug 18, 2008 11:01:58 | How many levels does Ao have? -Here are the stats of Ao: ∞ |
| #10StiggerAug 18, 2008 14:13:03 | See, now I feel devalued as a player if there is a being out there I can't kill and take the stuff of... bad LK, I'm reporting you for not catering to my own selfish fantasies and desires to be uberific. ;) |
| #11meldreadAug 18, 2008 14:34:48 | I've postulated in the past that the only way to kill Ao is to become an Overdeity yourself, putting you on an equal level with him. However, there was a long (very long) debate over whether or not an ascended god could become an Overdeity, or if you were simply 'born' (for lack of a better term) as an Overdeity. If you can ascend to godhood and eventually become an Overdeity, you'd have to do it in another Crystal Sphere outside Ao's influence. Then you'd have to hope for a method of getting back in Toril's Crystal Sphere past Ao. However, if the above is possible then the resulting battle would come down to an initiative roll. You'd both basically have infinite initiative, so all you'd do is roll a d20 with whoever getting the highest number retconning the other out of existence. ;) I, personally, believe it is possible to some degree. After all, wasn't the reasoning behind Mystra having so many Chosen that basically she'd eventually become powerful enough to challenge him? |
| #12suin_bahhar_02Aug 18, 2008 15:29:46 | Huh? Come again? Mystra wasn't THAT ambitious (or foolish for that matter). Ao not stepping in is in character for the guy. He always seemed a bit like a shy type of overdiety to me, who had hidden away his own little snowball called Realmspace from his superiors, who are far more powerful and capricious as he is. During the ToT he stepped in only to reassure divine duty, not because of a diecide. |
| #13Mr_MiscellanyAug 18, 2008 16:21:23 | -Chris Perkins does not peruse these boards. How do you know? Do you sit over his shoulder while he works? :P |
| #14GreenKnightAug 18, 2008 16:27:19 | CHRIS PERKINS IS IN YOUR BASE KILLING YOUR MEN!!! |

We know there are greater gods, gods and demi-gods or exarchs. Then there is AO and his superiors. Is it like the eastern Celestial Bureaucracy? Or more like a western corporation? Are the Greater Gods managers over the Gods and Exarchs are their runners? Is AO the regional VP of Realmspace? Who is the President, the CEO? Inquiring minds want to know! Bel |
| #18markustay63Aug 18, 2008 17:48:40 | See, now I feel devalued as a player if there is a being out there I can't kill and take the stuff of... bad LK, I'm reporting you for not catering to my own selfish fantasies and desires to be uberific. ;) I know, right? If I can't kill the Overgod of Realmspace with my level 1 character, then this setting is terribly broken and I can't play in it! Also... I noticed there are WORDS in the 4e FRCG... thats just too hard! Where are all the illustrations and pop-ups? I'm the center of the Universe; why won't WotC cater to my needs? Waaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh!!! ![]() |
| #1918DELTAAug 18, 2008 17:53:58 | I know, right? -Good Grief! :P 18DELTA ;) |

How do you know? -Because, while he has a screen name on these boards, to post his designer journals, he has never come to this section to field questions. |
| #21StiggerAug 19, 2008 1:27:53 | -Wait, what? Refer to MT's post. ;) |
| #22lord_karsusAug 19, 2008 9:55:38 | Refer to MT's post. ;) -Oh, okay. Makes a bit more sense, now. Duh. |
