Christmas Present to me: Ed Greenwood's Eye on the Realms articles

Dec 23, 2011 1:57:12 Having seen the list of Ed's articles compiled by The Sage over at Candlekeep, I decided to renew my DDI subscription and partake of all of Ed Greenwood's Eye On the Realms articles.

It's quite nice to have a couple weeks off from the library over the holidays. Plenty of time to catch up on my reading, which now includes a so-far-not-disappointing set of Realmslore-filled articles penned by the master himself.

Note to WotC: PLEASE keep these articles coming!

Give yourself the gift of awesome, dear reader. If you enjoy good Realmslore then these articles are easily worth the price of admission.

Out of all of the material in DDI that I have used both as a player and a DM, the Eye on the Realms articles by Ed have been the most enjoyable for me on a personal level.

I am hearing that a good Cormyr acticle is coming next month, by Garan Thal(Brian Corijto).

Glad to hear this Brian ! I always look forward for more Cormyrian love. My first FR campaign launched from the small village of Eveningstar 20 winters ago and i ever since have been enjoying this part of the Realms.

Anything else you heard ?

Out of all of the material in DDI that I have used both as a player and a DM, the Eye on the Realms articles by Ed have been the most enjoyable for me on a personal level.

For me it's been the Backdrop articles in Dragon that have been most useful, but I can already see that Ed's Eye on the Realms articles may overtake the Backdrop pieces in terms of usefulness to me.

While reading Ed's first two articles (Amreth Gaunt, Master Merchant and The Flame Door) I wrote down every new and unique word not already found in Candlekeeps Glossary of Phrases, Sayings & Words of the Realms, as well as each new NPC name, group name and new location.

There were 18 new words, 2 new shop names and 7 new NPCs (including NPC aliases) and 1 new group.

I think for gaming groups like mine where I and most of my players have the game rules mastered, it becomes a lot easier to focus on the campaign story we're creating. This is why Ed's material is so clutch for me as a Dungeon Master to use because it provides instant names, places and NPCs and--most important--NPC motives and plots.

Also, IMO Ed's stuff can be just as useful for those who don't set their campaigns in the Realms and who don't use 4E (maybe you prefer Pathfinder or any earlier edition of the D&D game). It's great for a DM who needs to get going on creating memorable adventure hooks, campaign arcs and encounters with real flavor.

Actually, Monday will be the 2nd of January, when they start posting things like the Table of Contents for the next issues of Dragon and Dungeon. At that point, there may, in fact, be more that I can say.
