Cities up high, or: It's getting rather crowded up here in my sky.

From what I’ve gathered from the new FRCG, it seems that there has been a recent expansion into the skies when it comes to real estate.

When the empire of Netheril did it, it was cool. It happened in the distant past and remained there, fueling tales of mighty arch mages that inspired apprentices and hedge wizards all over Faerun. When the Shades came back, it was still cool. Here was an artifact of ancient times. It was something that nobody could hope to replicate (just take one look at Proctiv’s Move Mountain for the official epic spell version….) without 10th level magic. It was unique. It was special. It was considered such a danger that a bunch of Chosen tried to cut the balloon strings that held it up.

Now it seems that the Empire of Netheril has not just one, but two of these monolithic symbols of power. Not only that, but so does the new Aboleth Sovereignty AND the survivors of Halruua (albeit on a smaller scale than the others). If memory serves, there was also mention by one of the primary posters a while back about yet another city of Selunite’s floating around out there. Somehow it all seems less special than it once was.

I am not a fan of the FR novel lines, which means there is a ton of lore I simply don’t know. My questions are these:

(1)Since the inception of the FR boxed set, just how many flying cities/fortresses have we had in the “present”? Are they just a recent fad?
(2)What do we have now, either pre- or post-spellplague? I’m sure there will be something I’ve missed.

The Selune one was in 3E and is still in her home Plane I am guessing (and hoping).

Halruua always had floating towers and such I think.

Yeah, floating real estate isn't anything new in the Realms, although it might be fair to call it a "recent fad". Off the top of my head, I recall there was an elusive floating tower in the Reaching Woods (I think).

The thread makes me think of the GET OFFA MY CLOUD! joke.

Oh no--the more who tell the joke, the merrier.

As to objects in the air... Flying ships have been plying the trade routes for the entire history of the Realms (one featured prominently in the comic book back in the late 80's/ early 90's). Something Eberron stole from the realms.

Well, to be fair, airships aren't exactly unique in the fantasy genre.

Was anything about it ever published in a source book, and if so which one?

Or even in real life for that matter ;)

Also a point to state here that what the Netherise have and what others have are two different things. In the case of the Shade, they actually have control over their cities and can move them to wherever they please (great for vacationing the population for free during the winter months ).

As for everyone else, they are simply colonizing motes that appeared during the Spellplague. Some move; most don't. There's no control over them.

Well, all the ones I've listed have the power to move*. Even the Company of Five (the Halruuans) can move theirs, and it's definitely built on an earth mote.

If memory serves the names of one of the higher level rituals being released in the Players Guide implies that it's purpose is to move Earth Motes. We won't know for sure until the book is out.

Netheril: Empire of Magic
A Grand History of the Realms
Lost Empires of Faerûn

Thanks Lord Karsus. I don't suppose anyone remembers the name of the city? My curiosity has gotten the better of me now....

*except possibly Selunes, as I haven't read anything on it first-hand.

Source? Not saying it's not true--Halruuans are Netherise descendants--but I have yet to see this.

It's in the Company of Five description in the FRCG.

The town is the remnants of a pirate hold which was uplifted during the spellplague rather than a deliberate act of magical manipulation. I don't have my books on me right now so couldn't tell you it's name, but it's an area that has been detailed somewhere in the 3.0/3.5 lore. There was a renegade Halruuan wizard providing magical camouflage for the community in those days.

Just read the description of Yaulazna, and while it is an earth mote that broke away from the original pirate base, nothing says that the five companies can control the flight of the mote.

It's under the defense section. It also states that it can cross into the Astral Sea. See page 256.

The Five Companies.

No wonder I couldn't figure it out.

Yup. They got a mote and they can choose where it moves.

Anybody know if there others like this, 'cause this is the first I've read of it?

Nope. Naex is generally on his game.

When you call it The Company of Five, you tend to throw people off theirs.

The Cloud Giant Runecasters of the Ice Spires know how to create enormous Cloud Palaces by means of a dozen cloud giants capturing a cloud with their levitation magic and forcing it onto a runecaster, who makes the cloud solid by linking an intricately carved rune covered rock to the cloud.

The skill to create such a rune is one of the most difficul of all, but it is quite possible.

One such palace floats about today, headed by the cloud giants Abram and Marchus.

The Shades also have a floating citadel hovering over the shadow vortex that they are using in their experiments to rebuild the shadowweave.

-I see no reason why "motes" should be stationary. If they act as if they are under the effects of a Levitate spell, a powerful-enough Gust of Wind spell, or something of that nature, could move it around.

There was an entire civilization called the Cloud Kingdom that existed above the Stonelands, and was most likely a contemporary of latter Netheril.

The Giant Stone Monoliths in the Stonelands are the remnants of that, when the Kingdom fell al at once for some inexplicable reason. More then likely, they were affected by the same momentary lapse of magic Netheril was.

It was a Kingdom of Cloud and Storm Giants, and consisted of many other flying races, such as good-aligned Dragons, pagasi, Lammasu, etc...

The few surviving Cloud and Storm Giant clans from that Kingdom now make their homes in the Stormhorns.

Nobody is really saying different. They make no mention of motes as anything but stationary or drifting. Which is why I made my point--and asked for further clarification.

I can easily see a mote being redirected or controlled. As for who would do it....

There are two rituals so far that appear to have that effect... Shift Mote (moving motes maybe) and Raise Land (creating motes, and enclaves potentially). These two become more powerful if they implement High Magic and Circle Magic into rituals.
