This is my idea for increasing the speed of casting rituals...
Draws upon ideas from many sources.

The basic idea is that you cast the majority of the ritual prior to when you need it. So say you have an idea that you need a knock ritual, and you may not have time to set it up or cast it, so you ready it ahead of time.

The casting time remains unchanged, except that to finish the casting requires one standard action.
You may hold a number of rituals ready equal to your intelligence or wisdom modifier, and each can only be maintained for a period of 24 hours minus the level of the ritual, after which time the magic dissipates harmlessly.

any thoughts, suggestions?

Also, if the idea is sound, should this be a feat, or just an adjunct rule to the Ritual rules?

The general idea, cast now benefit later works - but only for some spells. Sanctum (teleport to your Sanctum 1 mile away - from dragon mag) works, but the reason why Knock takes so long is too keep the rogue usefull and prevent the wizard (or bettre ritual caster) from overshadowing the rogue.

So you have to limit it for every spell, so.... Linked portal on a place to be triggered somehow and open the portal could work with the right set of conditions (remains dormat for hours, or costs way more, or goes only on a permantent teleportation circle.....) would need playtesting I guess - but the psersonal application like a Mantle is a tough one to balance.

So comprehend languages could just as well lie dormant for a 10day week, so it really depends on the ritual.

taking all ideas together

... how about combinbing this ritual into a ritual of first level, contingency... cost is the original ritual X 2. The contingency is permenant, howwever you can only have a number ready equal to ((1/2 level + int mod)/2)

I was going for a feel of hanging spells, not really a Mantle, just a way to make sure some of those more commonly used rituals were easily accessible. I am not opposed to increasing the cost, but doubling IMO is a bit much. Also I feel they should expire as the magic would not hold indefinitely. Basically back to studying a spellbook and preparing some spells as in previous editions.

As for knock and rogues, what happens when a thief gets knocked out, and you are running from enemies? Unlocking a door to hide sure would be nice. The limitations guarantee that the mage will not be stealing anyone's thunder, but can provide timely assistance.

hmm ok, back to spell preperation, but keeping it limited. I like the sound of 1/2 level + int mod though, seems to flow better with 4e.. but there needs to be a tried and true system so that you are limited by level.

I can give on that point, but I was trying desperately to keep it so that they really had to decide which to take and not just be a walking library, so maybe (1/2 character level + Int mod)/2

thats actually what I meant to recommend :x anyways sounds good, however there also needs to be other factors.

i was talking to my friend and this is going to cause problems with spells like resurrection.

Yeah, I considered that too. Maybe a nine minute primary casting and a one minute final casting? Enough time to get one off in a rush (especially if all you are doing is finishing and you don't have to set up the components), but too much to be a combat spell.
