| #1xhereticxJun 25, 2008 16:42:49 | http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/drfe/20080625 Now this gives me some hope as to the future of D&D. Very nice setting and the lore seems well-crafted as well. Plus the hints at Far Realm interference could be used. Discuss. |
| #2lord_karsusJun 25, 2008 17:36:48 | -There's never been anything particularly wrong with the "sights and settings" of the new Core setting. -That said, you know there isn't actually a Core setting, per se, correct? It's more of a bunch of interesting places, people and events that exist for your own homebrew setting to "dip into", when you want. |
| #3the_ubbergeekJun 25, 2008 17:46:29 | Ain't bad at all! |
| #4xhereticxJun 25, 2008 18:43:49 | -There's never been anything particularly wrong with the "sights and settings" of the new Core setting. Exactly, which is just the way I like it. |
| #5lord_karsusJun 25, 2008 20:57:33 | Exactly, which is just the way I like it. -Just making sure you're "clear" with the idea. Personally speaking, I don't like creating specific events/places/people inherent to the Core Setting (ie., Dragonborn come from XYZ) when there really isn't a Core Setting, per se. I'd rather them either give me a fully blank slate, devoid of everything except for stats, or give me a world that is already detailed. |

They more just set up a general feeling and template for the world, give some general info. Then they throw in lots of extra stuff to spice the setting up for you to fill in and still leave massive gaps for the DM to fill in. I think WoTC has got it in the bag this time. I also like the idea of not making setting specific material. Very smart economically and quells possibly future conflict. |

Either give me a tabula rasa, or give me something that's done. I think WoTC has got it in the bag this time. I also like the idea of not making setting specific material. Very smart economically and quells possibly future conflict. -"Core" material was never setting specific. That's, you know, kind of the point. ;) |
| #8xhereticxJun 25, 2008 21:06:53 | -"Core" material was never setting specific. That's, you know, kind of the point. ;) http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dramp/20080430 You have read this article right? I mean after the FRCG, FRPG, and one adventure. No more FR specific stuff. |
| #9lord_karsusJun 25, 2008 21:15:24 | -Yeah, I know. |
| #10xhereticxJun 25, 2008 21:16:45 | -Yeah, I know. So you got my point right? You happy or not about it? |
| #11lord_karsusJun 25, 2008 21:18:14 | So you got my point right? You happy or not about it? -I'm not making the transition into the 4-Gotten Realms anyway, so it really doesn't matter to me. In a sense, I guess that's a bad thing, because that means less coverage for the setting, but at the same time, I guess it's a good thing, because that means less things for me to be disappointed and upset about. |

Well, I guess they did their job well. Because all the complaining on these forums seems to have reached them and they are kind of marooning campaign settings in general in total favor of core, since so far as I know most of the feedback on those boards are more favorable. Like any good courtesean knows, you dance for the audience that throws the most gold coins at you, and hopefully you will draw everyone else in with your growing fame. |
| #13lord_karsusJun 25, 2008 21:28:42 | Well, I guess they did their job well. -Now, mind you, I'm no business major, but I would think that doing a job well would entail people not "abandoning" the setting. |
| #14merrikcaleJun 25, 2008 21:31:18 | Well, I guess they did their job well. Because all the complaining on these forums seems to have reached them and they are kind of marooning campaign settings in general in total favor of core, since so far as I know most of the feedback on those boards are more favorable. But that was the plan all along. The plan has always been to "maroon" the settings in place for one general core |
| #15xhereticxJun 25, 2008 21:53:53 | But that was the plan all along. The plan has always been to "maroon" the settings in place for one general core Well, Wizards has always had a kind of cold-war mentality regarding D&D and trying to avoid TSR's mistakes, so its not suprising that they have jumped to the opposite extreme. |
| #16lord_karsusJun 25, 2008 21:59:45 | -I don't know about that...I've never heard that that was the plan all along (all along being since WotC got the D&D license). |
| #17merrikcaleJun 25, 2008 22:04:41 | -I don't know about that...I've never heard that that was the plan all along (all along being since WotC got the D&D license). I mean all along as in since they decided to do 4e |
| #18lord_karsusJun 25, 2008 22:14:02 | -Oh, okay. Yes, we do know that. |
| #19rinonalyrna_fathomlinJun 26, 2008 9:13:13 | Yeah, I though this was a great article, especially since I have a plot about tiefling characters swirling around in my head.![]() I'm thinking it WILL be worth it to buy DDI after all, if this is the content I can expect. |
| #20nymrohdJun 26, 2008 11:03:30 | Well the article did give me a feel of "trying too hard". Too much diversity and coolness. |
| #21lord_karsusJun 26, 2008 17:10:57 | Too much...coolness. -BLASPHEMY! :P ;) |
| #22xhereticxJun 26, 2008 18:06:27 | Well the article did give me a feel of "trying too hard". Too much diversity and coolness. The writer was obviously a new one, so it was his first shot and he tried his best to pull something off there, and it might have gone over, since I felt it as well. All the bluffing aside, the lore is nice and as long as WoTC keeps cranking out stuff like that I might subscribe to DDI. |
| #23lord_karsusJun 26, 2008 18:08:51 | The writer was obviously a new one, so it was his first shot and he tried his best to pull something off there, and it might have gone over, since I felt it as well. -From reading the 'About the Author' thing there, it seems that the author's name is a pseudonym for multiple people! |
| #24rinonalyrna_fathomlinJun 26, 2008 18:42:36 | -From reading the 'About the Author' thing there, it seems that the author's name is a pseudonym for multiple people! That's correct. And I doubt all those people (if any) are "new" at the job. |
| #25xhereticxJun 26, 2008 18:43:50 | That's correct. Could just be a collaboration by a bunch of overexited interns. |
| #26nymrohdJun 26, 2008 18:46:31 | Well I'd expect a couple of courses on Creative Writing to be a req to be an intern in this industry, and you are taught early on to keep things simply and never try to sell your concepts too hard; it invariably stretches credulity. |
| #27lord_karsusJun 26, 2008 18:47:46 | That's correct. -The odds get slimmer and slimmer the more people "use" the name. Could just be a collaboration by a bunch of overexited interns. -Or, just as likely, a collaboration by the "greatest" minds in the industry, who knows. |
