Cormyr becomes an actual empire?

I'm wondering if it would be inconceivable for Cormyr to formally become an empire, with an emperor and everything? I was considering doing such a thing in my upcoming Realms game, and despite empires usually being depicted as evil in media (I blame Star Wars for that) this "Empire of Cormyr" isn't so. I understand Cormyr essentially already being an imperial power in recent years because of the cold war with Netheril, so such a move might be seen as little more than acknowledging that Cormyr has changed, not necassarily for the better or the worse.

So if it's possible, what would have to happen for Cormyr to become an empire, whether in the present day or in the past? Historically speaking empires would usually (but not always) emerge from turbluent, rocky periods such as Rome and France, so perhaps a war with Netheril would spark the beginnings of this change?

So with the death of King Azoun IV, why wouldn't it be possible for a emperor or emperoress to come to fruit? Such as you have already outlayed, Rome and France are a prime example. But with Netheril already in war with Szazz Tam and Thay, I wonder if they would be over cumbered in regards to more war?
And as in regards to your emperor or emperoress...one would think Lady Alusair would fill the spot. But please forgive me, I am only a novelist and nothing more. I do not play DnD. Perhaps if you specify your question I could be of more assistance?

Thanks for responding! All I just wanted to know is if it was inconceivable for Cormyr to become an empire since it seems to be so entrenched in tradition and seems to be a conservative regime...well, historically it has anyway. At least I think it has, I can't claim to know a whole lot about Forgotten Realms lore. But anyway yes, that first question, and just, what would need to happen, whether before the campaign or during it, for it to get its first Emperor of the Cormyreans?

They'd have to conquor and impose their rule on some people who didn't want it.

Sounds very similar to every Empire in history...Realms or Earth. I guess Paris better get to work then huh?

Hello Paris7,

In my opinion it’s not inconceivable at all for Cormyr to become some sort of an Empire.

I personally think it already is an Empire.

I think what we’ve seen in Cormyr’s history is a slow, steady expansion and acquisition of territory, where that acquisition comes because of immediate threats “just around the bend” that—if not dealt with by the Crown of Cormyr—would continue to bedevil and harass the people of the Forest Kingdom.

The latest conflict for Cormyr vis-à-vis Sembia (where Sembia was a proxy for the Shadovar of Netheril) was just the latest in a long list of wars and conflict that forced Cormyr to expand outwards.

I think Cormyr would need a couple things to change or happen within its borders in order to for it to shift out of its ponderously slow outward rate of expansion.

The first is either A) the existence of some sort of major external threat or B) the adoption by the King and most of the citizenry of a desire to spread Cormyr’s values and power outward or C) divine intervention/influence (perhaps Bane takes an interest in Cormyr in order to check the Shadovar and instructs his faithful to convert as many nobles and commoners of Cormyr as possible).

The second is a radical culling of the nobility, for it is Cormyr’s rebellious, arrogant and quick-to-find-fault-with-the-Crown nobility that have checked the power of Cormyr’s more ambitions Kings and otherwise kept the Crown busy controlling them (think: herding cats) when it might otherwise look to expand Cormyr’s borders.

Geographically, Cormyr has natural borders that it has only recently moved past. I think the border with Sembia to the east is one that Cormyr may test in the future, but with Sembia a proxy of Netheril and the Empire of Netheril existing just beyond the Stonelands to the north, I think Cormyr is likely to continue to expand to the south and to consolidate its hold on of Teziir and Elversult.

That said, some ambitious and rich noble (or powerful adventurer wanting to become noble) might just set his or her sights on Westgate and win it for the Crown by ridding it of every last Bleth, Cormaerel and any and all other descendents of banished, former Cormyrean nobility that to this day plot their revenge against Cormyr from the free city of Westgate.

Sembia is a client of Netheril atm, so I don't see Cormyr pulling it off.  The Dales are a possibility, but really, the Obarskyrs are usually too busy dealing with their own in-fighting nobility to focus much attention on conquoring their neighbors.

Frankly I don't see a Cormyrean empire in the cards.  Simply not going to happen.  You can make the argument that it is an empire now, as it does expand although slowly.  Changing the name though, (which is really what you seem to be after) I just don't see.  There's no reason for the nation to do it.

That said, it's your game.  Do what you want.

Paris7, you seem to be one of those DMs who'd ABSOLUTELY LOVE the Cormyr Lineage by Brian Cortijo (see this other thread). I think that would give you so many ideas . . . just, wow.

But in answer to the OP, the first thing I think you'd have to deal with is the motivation to become an empire (i.e., "stop these other nations from being controlled by Shade by taking them over first," is the one I'd recommend), and also what to do about the Obarskyrs. Whatever era you're discussing, the royal family of Cormyr has a certain nobility about it that would fly in the face of empire-building. You'd probably have to put a new, less moral ruler on the throne (who may or may not be an Obarskyr) who sees empire as the key to securing Cormyr's safety and/or his/her own personal fortune.

I highly encourage you to check out the recent Cormyr articles (see that other thread) and consult with Brian Cortijo. He's the Cormyr specialist among us authors/designers.

Cheers

I could honestly see Cormyr becoming an empire in name causing increased instability in the region.  Cormyr is one of the "big three" opposing Netherese expansion at the moment with Evereska and Cormanthyr.  Cormyr taking the name "empire" might cause their nominal elven allies to look more closely to their own borders and/or cut off any aid and cooperation with Cormyr.

This would weaken the stand against the Shadovar, who are an empire in every sense of the word.

It would also cause problems with the Dales would would rightly begin to be nervous over their own soveriegnty.  They've already got the Sembians in control of some of the Dales such as Scardale and Featherdale, while Cormyr already controls the High Dale.  The Dalesmen might think that the Cormyrians and Sembians seek to carve the Dales up for themselves, which is pretty much what empires do.

Of course, the additional instability plays into the favor of the Shadovar, which might make for some interesting cloak and dagger stuff as the Netherese try to bait the Cormyrians down that path to make things easier on their own imperial designs.

Cormyr has always wanted to annex Shadowdale, for the safety and security of the Realm.

Have you checked out the Cormyr PDF?

Honestly I'd forgotten about that old desire.  Which Cormyr PDF are you speaking of?

Shadowdale iirc has/had gates the lead into Cormyr. The back and forth kind of gates.

I remember that vaguely.  Wasn't it one gate in the twisted tower so that Mourngrym's wife (a Rowanmantle off the top of my head) could visit her family?  Were there other gates?

Indeed.

IIRC in Elminster MUST Die, there is a gate in the Palace that leads to Shadowdale or by Shadowdale.

Heck Daggerdale could be absorbed into Cormyr for mutual protection.

Didn't the spellplague mess up most gates and portals?  I'd think those wouldnt be "security concerns" any longer, and even if they were the war wizards could just counter spell them or otherwise remove them.

Daggerdale already has a Cormaeril on the throne IIRC.  One might be able to make the argument that he should be a Obarskyr vassal already.

According to the FRCG, yes. However, I'm pretty sure this specific portal is one that's been established to function normally post-Spellplague (not sure if it's in Elminster Must Die or in Bury Elminster Deep.

Delta, do you know which book that gate is in (or am I totally misremembering)?

Hey that's a good point.

Do you know if this Cormaeril is (or was related to) the Obarskyrs?

the portals all touched the elven final gate, which after it was destroyed, it closed down effectively the  majority of all the portals across faerun.

decades later the spell plague hit and with the death of mystra the majority of what is left of the portals are either no longer functioning or malfunctioning.

portals like the time portal still function.

Cormaeril.

ummmmmm

isnt that the family that lost it all after one of its patriarchs turned against the purple dragon throne??

and then had one of its members make out with what was then the crown princess during the death of the dragon trilogy??

and their son was on the throne.... Azoun Vth I believe it was.

Yeah, I forgot that Foril Obarskyr is technically a decendant of the Cormaerils as well.  I guess the biggest question is:  has he sworn fealty to the crown of Cormyr or would he even need it if he was not born in Cormyr.

From backdrop: Cormyr

The Cormaeril family, also implicated in that incident, similarly lost lands and titles but was permitted to remain in-country. Those Cormaerils who remained loyal were restored their nobility late in Azoun V’s reign.

Also,

House Cormaeril
House Cormaeril is a good choice for an adventurer who wishes to be from “good blood” and noble station. Even family historians are unsure of the number of possible heirs, sinister branches, and illegitimate young in the family tree.

I'm not sure which branch of the family Silver Morn married into, or how close the relationship with Rowen Cormaeril (the Tanalasta hookup) is.  I'm guessing that the present Lord of Daggerdale was born IN Daggerdale and would not owe allegiance to the Obarskyrs, as he's got no claim to lands there.

The line of Cormaerils that currently rule Daggerdale was not part of the group that was restored to nobility by Azoun V during his reign. While the Cormaeril family is a large, sprawling clan, Azoun was careful to restore only those branches of the family that had remained in Cormyr, to reward their steadfast loyalty.

That's not to say that Barathal Cormaeril, the Lorn Morn of Daggerdale, doesn't have some tenuous claim to a Cormyrean title from the wording of a grant of title, but he would not currently be considered a subject of the Crown or a noble of Cormyr. If, however, he decided to press an ancestral claim in Cormyr (to title or lands--although Cormyrean nobility is not tied to a specific parcel of land the way it was in feudal Europe), he'd be a Cormyrean first, even before his nobility in Daggerdale was recognized (although, it would in no way be ignored).

Just some thoughts...

Thanks for clearing that up.  It sounds like the throne of Cormyr has no reason to expect anything out of the House of Morn, or whatever that branch of Cormaerils is presently calling themselves.  In fact, when the Cormaerils lost favor, I'd have rather expected the Daggerdale branch to distance themselves as much as possible, and even take the name Morn over Cormaeril much as the current House of Windsor in Great Britain.

I'm not so sure. They haven't really done much that's imperialistic. If a few more of the Dales sought Cormyrean protection, and even maybe a couple other Dragon coast cities, Cormyr would be overstepping it's traditional place a bit, but it would hardly become an empire as a result.

Empire talk would have to go to the Netherese and I think Cormyr is an old Empire in presevation, big ideas but struggling for any growth.  The Netherese as dark and mysterious as their hearts can be seek the greedy expansion.  Cormyr struggles with those who wish to rule or prosper more than actual expansion as I would think Empires go.  Lots of people demand rights and many wish it would stay as it is and others wish to corrupt or gain from all the many fruits that constantly spawn from such a successful struggling nation wrapped up with such colorful history.
