| #1WotC_EricMar 16, 2009 12:22:43 | Richard Baker just released a new novel, Corsair, Book 2 in the Blades of the Moonsea trilogy on March 3rd. We want to give some of you the chance to win a signed copy of this book. What do you have to do to enter? Simply answer the following question. The answer can be found on our website. The first 16 entrants with the correct answer will receive a book! What did do Geran do to create a distraction to free the half-elf from the pirates? CONTEST CLOSED, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUBMISSIONS Good luck! |
| #2markustay63Mar 16, 2009 12:45:31 | So in order to win the book, you have to have already read it? ![]() Thats a bit... weird... Also, I would recommend you make it so the winners of one contest cannot enter another within 90 days or some-such, otherwise you are going to get A LOT of the same people winning each of these. Just my two cents - Mark (who was a winner - Thank You - in the last round) |
| #3MattDrozMar 16, 2009 14:52:27 | I so want to post in response to you MT, but I'm afraid I'll give away the answer. |
| #4lord_karsusMar 16, 2009 15:16:19 | -Like the other thread, let's keep this one free from random commentary, and for technical issues/questions/whatever else. Other things like ideas and so on can be discussed in the Community Business section. |
| #5angelus_obscuraMar 17, 2009 0:24:30 | So in order to win the book, you have to have already read it? I don't even have the book and I was still able to send in a response. Read the OP again, closely. It says the answer is on their website. Cheers. ~First Son of Darkness, angelus obscura (who was ALSO a winner in the last round) ![]() |
| #6markustay63Mar 17, 2009 0:47:18 | So it does... so it does... :embarrass |
| #7nightseerMar 17, 2009 0:58:00 | Just submitted my answer. ;) May your Bitterness and Loss be as sweet, sweet honey unto Her. Darkness is calling |
| #8robbgobbMar 17, 2009 1:53:30 | I just sent the e-mail. I hope I get lucky enough to win. I will have to make a hard decision on if I keep the book as a treasure or donate it to my library (my wife works there). If I win then I don't have to buy it but at same time think it would be awesome for the library to have it. |
| #9xaos48Mar 17, 2009 6:47:11 | Just posted; hope I win! Love me some Richard Baker! |
| #10red_wizardMar 17, 2009 12:10:21 | It's a real pain in the arse doing this, when error messages keep happening. It's bad enough rushing to try to slip in a response, but to have it fail is simply infuriating. It tells me my question has NOT been submitted, and then gets me to file an error response. This then sends me an email, telling me I should get a response within two days. I don't really feel like waiting 2 days to discuss this, then wait on a fix, as that is more than enough time to lose any hope of getting this novel. *Shakes head in frustration* -RW EDIT: Is this message one that is supposed to appear when sending the submission? I ask, as when re-reading, it appears that it might be. I don't make a habit of contacting CC, so I'd not know if this is the norm. |
| #11markustay63Mar 17, 2009 12:43:37 | You need to allow pop-ups from this site. You also just need to hit 'Send E-Mail' when you get to the screen that says "Your message has not been submitted yet". |
| #12IluvrienMar 17, 2009 13:05:55 | I managed to enter last night (I hope I win) but I almost gave up. 4 times of being told that my browser had an error and then clearing my cache before it worked. Any chance this could be sorted in future? I don't have this kind of trouble anywhere else. |
| #13nightseerMar 17, 2009 15:25:20 | It took me 4 tries to enter also. ![]() |
| #14markustay63Mar 17, 2009 22:18:12 | Gleemax's deathroes still wreaking havoc... :P |
| #15MattDrozMar 18, 2009 12:44:53 | Gleemax's deathroes still wreaking havoc... :P No kidding... I'm having problems just getting into the forums! I'm logged in and everything, but every 5th visit or so, it doesn't show any boards... |
| #16nightseerMar 18, 2009 16:10:30 | Whats gleemax? |
| #17markustay63Mar 18, 2009 17:18:53 | It was an aborted-attempt by WotC to grab some Internet real-estate. And its failure is why there is SO much wrong with the current DDi, why it was postponed for so long, and why they had to drop the price into the basement to get folks to even consider it. On the upside, it gives us all something to laugh about now. :D The reason why I point to it as part of this particular problem is because not all of the bugs were ever worked-out after the server migration (note the URL at the top of your screen - Gleemax still lurks in the shadows...) |
| #18berevarMar 19, 2009 6:40:35 | Wow...16 entrants...way to give a guy a chance. >.> |
| #19angelus_obscuraMar 19, 2009 23:40:40 | Anyone receive a reply stating they won? I sent in my contest entry awhile back, and I'm sure I was among the first 16, but still received no word. T_T Maybe they're not including previous contest winners? |
| #20MattDrozMar 20, 2009 9:17:54 | Anyone receive a reply stating they won? I sent in my contest entry awhile back, and I'm sure I was among the first 16, but still received no word. T_T I'm wondering the same thing. Eric, are there any winners yet? |
| #21red_wizardMar 20, 2009 9:57:38 | Still no word to me either, and I wasn't a first pass winner. -RW |
| #22markustay63Mar 20, 2009 15:39:09 | Could be they're just waiting until they have twenty before announcing anything. |
| #23nightseerMar 20, 2009 16:45:59 | Still waiting for a reply. |
| #24red_wizardMar 20, 2009 16:46:49 | I don't mind people winning both contests, so long as the people who had issues delaying them on both, and didn't win the first, aren't bumped back missing their chance again, while people who won the first time, get a second novel. -RW |
| #25ranadielMar 20, 2009 17:12:41 | Ummm just for reference, it was about 13 days between when I entered the last contenst and when I heard anything back. So everyone should be prepared for a slightly longer wait then what we have had so far. |
| #26angelus_obscuraMar 20, 2009 22:19:31 | Ummm just for reference, it was about 13 days between when I entered the last contenst and when I heard anything back. So everyone should be prepared for a slightly longer wait then what we have had so far. You're right. I looked back to that thread and it did take them over a week to notify ppl. I thought differently because when I entered for that contest, I was notified the day after. I guess people did not really enter that contest as quickly and as much as this one. ![]() |
| #27red_wizardMar 25, 2009 23:30:03 | Anyone hear anything yet? -RW |
| #28markustay63Mar 25, 2009 23:36:01 | Just the confirmation that they received my 'customer assisstance' E-Mail. |
| #29nightseerMar 26, 2009 8:53:02 | Still waiting. ![]() |
| #30angelus_obscuraMar 26, 2009 10:28:48 | Still waiting. Patience, Nightseer. Like all things, even our waiting will come to an end. Praise Shar. |
| #31nightseerMar 27, 2009 7:38:10 | Patience, Nightseer. Like all things, even our waiting will come to an end. Praise Shar. True. Show Praise Shar |
| #32nightseerMar 30, 2009 8:11:56 | I won! Got the E-mail this morning. :D Show Shar is great |
| #33red_wizardMar 30, 2009 14:57:00 | No email for me yet.... -RW |
| #34red_wizardMar 30, 2009 18:37:18 | Well, no book for me. ![]() -RW |
| #35lord_karsusMar 30, 2009 20:52:21 | -Want me to start poking around and asking questions? |
| #36red_wizardMar 30, 2009 22:28:29 | I'm sure it all checks out. I mean, I was in the top 8 for applying, but I suppose 9 other people could have been faster than me for responding. -RW |
| #37angelus_obscuraMar 31, 2009 2:14:58 | I have felt the joys of victory. (first contest) I have tasted the bitterness of defeat. (this one) Show In them both, I see Shar's will. And I am humbled. |
| #38IluvrienMar 31, 2009 3:47:57 | I didn't get one either. I have to say, I think I would feel a little better about having been pipped to the post (so to speak) if I hadn't had to spend several hours fighting with the customer service system before I got to send in my entry. |
| #39nightseerMar 31, 2009 8:33:43 | I have felt the joys of victory. (first contest) |
| #40red_wizardMar 31, 2009 8:37:10 | I don't think that the first 16 were picked this time. I think that they were chosen at random, unlike the first contest. This is somewhat frustrating for me, though having site troubles trying to respond didn't help. -RW |
| #41MattDrozMar 31, 2009 9:32:41 | Well, I don't know if I was one of the first or not (I know I beat MarkusTay, though :P). And I won this one as well. See, I know what the problem is with all the others. You're praying to the wrong goddess... Praise Selûne! :D (2 for 2!) |
| #42angelus_obscuraMar 31, 2009 12:55:09 | Well, I don't know if I was one of the first or not (I know I beat MarkusTay, though :P). And I won this one as well. Actually, I know I was among the first 16 entrants. However, the WOTC said in their reply that they were all out of signed books. Perhaps the community team do not really look at the first 16. They could have skipped a few by mistake, or the sent emails could have been delayed in the interwebz. As for Selune, if all it takes to win is to worship this sickly pale goddess, then why did a Sharran win? Maybe because Shar is better, cooler, hotter, stronger? neener neener neeeeeeeeeener ![]() :D :P |
| #43MattDrozMar 31, 2009 15:00:58 |
Ah, but I won BOTH contests. ![]() |
| #44nightseerMar 31, 2009 15:58:10 | Ah, but I won BOTH contests. So....:P Congrats, Nightseer! Hope you enjoy it! It gets better and better for me. ![]() |
| #45markustay63Mar 31, 2009 23:29:54 | I got a rock. ![]() |
| #46nightseerApr 01, 2009 5:47:09 | I got a rock. I sense great bitterness in you...;) |
| #47MattDrozApr 01, 2009 7:57:58 | Um... I received Swordmage in the mail yesterday, but I can't quite make out the signature and it doesn't look like Richard Baker's to me... I hate to ask, I really do, but did Richard sign the book or did someone else who's attached to it (artist/editor)? |
| #48the_orconianApr 01, 2009 8:29:16 | Maybe they cut-back on their pen budget. :P |
| #49iakhovasApr 01, 2009 9:08:12 | Um... I received Swordmage in the mail yesterday, but I can't quite make out the signature and it doesn't look like Richard Baker's to me... I hate to ask, I really do, but did Richard sign the book or did someone else who's attached to it (artist/editor)? Rich's full name is Lynn Richard Baker III so that might account for the odd signature. |
| #50angelus_obscuraApr 01, 2009 11:27:23 | I just got my signed copy of Swordmage a few minutes and I am PSYCHED!!! Hold on, still playing with the bubble wrap ... hee hee HEEHEEHEEHEE ... ![]() I got a rock. MarkusTay63: No, a rock! Roockkk!! Oh, my Goddess, Oh, my Gaawwwdess!! [buries his face on the altar] Shar: [appears over MarkusTay63's altar] Yes! Yesss! Oh, let me taste your tears, MarkusTay63! [starts licking MarkusTay63's tears off his face] Shar: Mm, your tears are so yummy and sweet! angelus_obscura: Dude, I think it might be best for us to never **** Shar off again. Nightseer: Good call. Shar: Oh, the tears of unfathomable bitterness! My-yummy! xD |
| #51red_wizardApr 01, 2009 13:17:30 | I sense great bitterness in you...;) I know there is great bitterness in me. -RW |

| #54lord_karsusApr 01, 2009 21:50:03 | -Stop with the random spam, please. |
| #55lord_karsusApr 01, 2009 21:51:03 | -The random spam, that is. It's not letting me go back and edit that, so... |
| #56markustay_dupApr 02, 2009 14:14:05 | Just to make myself clear - "I got a rock" was a reference to my not winning the Corsair contest. I received my copy of Swordmage yesterday, and am very happy with it. ![]() I don't mind that I didn't win both - if you scroll back you would see that I even suggested winners of one be exempt from others. That should apply to everybody, otherwise the same people (who never leave the boards) will keep winning over and over again. |
| #57lord_karsusApr 02, 2009 17:34:00 | -Now that the contest is over, what comments/concerns/criticisms from this specific contest do people have, that we can relay back to the people who run the contests? |
| #58red_wizardApr 02, 2009 17:48:41 | -People who have entered another contest within a certain period of time, and have one, shouldn't take precedence over those who are entering for the first time. -Bugs should be worked out in the system, before the contest starts, so that people who try to enter, aren't delayed, and thus denied the chance to win by missing the deadline. -Some counter system should be implemented, so that people can see how many others have entered the contest. -It should be specified whether it is going to be the first X amount, or simply X amount in general. If I think of more I'll post them. -RW |
| #59Mr_MiscellanyApr 02, 2009 19:16:22 | Was their ever an advert on the novel page of the main WotC site that linked to the contest? If not, it might be a good way to generate traffic to the FR Forums. |
| #60MattDrozApr 02, 2009 21:38:14 | Heck, I entered the Swordmage contest two WEEKS after it opened and won. The Corsair contest I just happened upon soon after the post went up. |
| #61red_wizardApr 02, 2009 22:00:31 | Heck, I entered the Swordmage contest two WEEKS after it opened... This is true, though to be fair, people who tried early to get in either couldn't, or quickly assumed that all the spots were filled. I was amongst both groups. I could not enter, as I kept suffering errors, so I eventually gave up, figuring it was too late anyway. Then of course, we were all surprised to see that the contest wasn't quite over, and the mad dash truly began. If hope was not entirely lost to begin with, it was utterly destroyed with the second pass. This is no ones fault, though wizards would have been better served saying 10 in general, or the first 10. With no way to gauge the application rate, it made for a quick acceptance of seeming inevitability. The second was different in that, learning from the first, many responded, but apparently not everyone stated as such. There were evidently 11 + that managed to apply without confirming application, or victory. -RW |
| #62nightseerApr 03, 2009 7:46:20 | hee hee HEEHEEHEEHEE hee hee hee hee ![]() I like that alot better than that orc orc orc nonsense. Was their ever an advert on the novel page of the main WotC site that linked to the contest? Yes, you had to read the sample chapter to know the answer. |
| #63markustay_dupApr 03, 2009 14:26:30 | I believe Misc meant the opposite, which wasn't the case. The contest got people to look to the main page for the answers, but nothing on the WotC's mainpage got people to check-out the contest (AFAIK). Misc makes a very good point, and one that synergizes nicely with my own suggestion/complaint - the idea is to generate interst in FR (and 4e D&D in general), and having the contest announced here - where people are already fans - kinda defeats the purpose. All they are doing is generating 'good will' among the existing fanbase, which I applaud them for, but they need to broaden the participation. They should offer a larger contest, but give-away some older novels as well (so as not to detract from potential sales), not have repeat-winners (for a given time-period), and announce the contest on a larger venue - posting it at Enworld, Paizo, Hasbro's main site, etc.... And BTW, I am greatly enjoying Swordmage, which is saying a lot considering I went into it with a very negative attitude. Unlike the one previous 4e novel I read, this one doesn't beat you over the head with the new setting - the whole thing could take place in 1380 DR (if one were to use the Warlock Knights prematurely). Rich Baker managed to write a story that doesn't revolve around the changes, but rather captures the Realms feel regardless. Kudos. ![]() |
| #64red_wizardApr 03, 2009 17:24:42 | When I'd first read the novel, I went in open minded, but sceptical. I was expecting something sub par at best, and drastically different. But, I was pleasantly surprised, and it was that novel that actually left me wanting to play in the 4e Realms. It proved to be a definite eye opener, and the little pieces of lore were intriguing at the time. -RW |

It proved to be a definite eye opener, and the little pieces of lore were intriguing at the time. I actually came into it ok, having liked Rich's last few books, but it was far better then I had expected. Small scale, yet epic. Colorful characters that came alive and a clear view of the region and mindsets of the people without being forceful about the changes. Corsair was excellent as well and both have given me tons of adventure ideas in and around the Moonsea area. |
| #66red_wizardApr 03, 2009 18:36:33 | I'm absolutely broke beyond all reason, so the only way I could have read Corsair, was to have won this contest. So I'll take your word on it being good. :P -RW |
| #67ranadielApr 04, 2009 6:22:01 | The contest got people to look to the main page for the answers, but nothing on the WotC's mainpage got people to check-out the contest (AFAIK). There was a blurb on the D&D main page about the contest. However I believe that all the copies had been won by the time the blurb went up, so I'm not sure how useful it really was. |
| #68rinonalyrna_fathomlinApr 04, 2009 18:31:15 | I'm absolutely broke beyond all reason, so the only way I could have read Corsair, was to have won this contest. I'll shed a few tears for you, RW.:P |
