i read on a FR wiki that:

Finder was able to slay Moander's real body in Tarterus, and claim its godly essence for his own. Moander's portfolio of rot and corruption, however, remained unclaimed by the bard.

...so my question is, did they just float off unclaimed, or does he have them, but chooses not to use them, for fear that they'd radically alter him in his present state - possibly making him more nihilistic, violent and cruel? furthermore, since there's no deity at the helm of two admittedly powerful portfolios, does this literally mean that rot, decay and natural corruption are somehow lessened? i'm surprised that two powerfully 'evil' type portfolios have gone unclaimed, to be truthful.?

If I remember, Finder altered the approach to those portfolios. Instead of Rot and Corruption, he twisted them to "Cycle of Life" and "Transformation of Art", so that he'd avoid the evil, foul personality of Moander rubbing off on him. Had he chose to use them as Moander had, he might very well have undergone a personality change, but it's not a guarantee. Also, just because a deity does not rule over a portfolio, does not mean the portfolio is lessened in any way in the mortal world. With this whole "Sphere" business, a god only lays claim to one concept/element/ideal/phenomenon/etc, so it's not too surprising that these two no longer exist. Keep in mind, we don't know what happened to Finder in 4E. Most people seem to suggest he should be an Exarch of Tymora or Oghma, but the fact is we don't know. Of course, that doesn't mean he doesn't exist in your realms (if you're even accepting 4E FR at all).

This could be it, sort of similiar to the Tempus-Garagos relationship where Tempus is averse to slaying Garagos since he does not want to take up Garagos portfolio (the destructive pillaging/plundering/bloodletting aspect of war).

Although I guess following that logic, Finder could not have claimed the portfolios at all since there does not seem to exist an option to simply refuse the aspects of the fallen god.

-That's the right of it.

ah, ok that makes a lot more sense actually.

in one of my current campaign arcs - loosely based upon age of worms meets return to elemental evil, i was hoping to have the BBEG become a divine rank 0 deity, by (hopefully) taking a discarded portfolio, or grasping at some remnant of divine essence. i was thinking along the lines of one of the seven lost gods (camnod, hassek or borem, ect.) or some unused portfolios (moander's remnants); borem's beating heart might hold more interest for this plotline, but i think it's just so classically vile to be a demi-deity of corruption and rotting.

also, i've glanced over the rules, and since most deities get their special abilities based on their divine ranks, what exactly *does* a divine rank 0 really accomplish. i realize they're 'hero deities' but are they likely to mop the floor with a group of five who are level 19+?

-Working in the mail room for a top Fortune 500 company still lets you say that you work for that top Fortune 500 company, right? There's always gotta be someone (or something) at the bottom of the ladder, and in this case, DvR 0 deities are at the bottom of the "divine food chain".

-They're the push-overs that make the Lesser Deities feel better about themselves. ;)

that is a good point. i suppose even being the schlub in the mailroom still has some manner of bragging rights.

although, divine rank 0's get the shaft. most, if not all of the abilities are like "A Rank 1 or higher deity..." and then list some awesomely cool, god-like abilities. i may just give them a single salient ability. because otherwise, my end-game, group - five 19th+ level PCs and a 17th level cohort - will probably turn him into divine rank 0 sashimi.
