Not sure if this is the right place for this thread but... can someone bring me up to speed?!

Sure WoTC has decided that the Realms fans are irrelevant and have decided to destroy the whole thing in an attempt to attract a few new buyers, who probably won't come. In other words, you came back just into time to say good-bye
#4 lord_karsus Apr 27, 2008 23:42:46	Not sure if this is the right place for this thread but... can someone bring me up to speed?! -Purchase the sourcebook A Grand History of the Realms, which is a complete (and fairly detailed) chronology of the Forgotten Realms up to the current date (1375 DR, Year of the Risen Elfkin), and then an extra ten years into the future just for "fun". When you read some of what happens in those extra ten years, I think you might see why I put that word in quotation marks.

Blackstaff dies, Halaster dies, Syluné the ghost-Sister dies for real. Obould becomes much stronger thanks to Gruumsh and does orcish stuff in the North. Sammaster is killed for good. Cormanthor is reclaimed and elves start coming back from Evermeet. Then, a bit later Cyric tricks Tyr into killing Helm. Also, Cyric and Shar kill Mystra and 100 years later 4e rules take over. Some dwarven deities only hardcore fans know about died too.

No. Will it give you the gist of what you may need to catch up on? Yes. i'm kinda new to D&D so i'd like to go through some detailed info. Maybe i should go through FR novels for that? Indeed, a lot of details about certain events are to be found in the novels. However, I think reading through the Grand History first is a great idea--then seek out the details that spark your interest. Besides, the Grand History is a great supplement, and I think an essential for any Realms fan (even though it certainly isn't perfect). PS: Show Cyric is suspected of involvement with the Tyr/Helm conflict, but notice it was never stated for a fact that he was involved.
#10 radacci Apr 29, 2008 6:50:39	fair enough. but im sure there's entries like: drizzt is born. which if i didnt know who it was, i wouldnt know that it was interessting, so it'd be hard to know what's interessting or not. now i know who he is, and read some books, and it's cool. but you get my point. Seems good place to start regardless. no problem, it's just 35k years of history to catch up on. will probably take 35 years haha. The reason i want know as much as possible, is cause i'd like to make a D&D/FR game in the future, and would like to make it a bit more extensive, than just Amn or whatever. But thats far in the future anyways.

Yes, there are entries like that--events not very important in-setting, and obviously there for fans of Drizzt. I especially love the entry about Wulfgar returning to Icewind Dale--such a pivotal event in the GRAND HISTORY of the Realms! In spite of trivialities, I still think that book is helpful, a good read, and very much worth the money.
#12 lord_karsus Apr 29, 2008 15:02:48	-Hey, in an all-encompassing timeline, you need to include the trivial things, too. In my own setting's timeline, I include NPC birthdates, PC birthdates, and little things like that.

It didn't do anything for me anyway.
