Hey gang,
I'm going to be running a new 4e game based in Amn, and I'm curious if there's any specifics in 4e as to the *exact* people in the places of power. I'm interested in filling out House Selemchant right now, but I can't seem to find the name of any "canon" characters in the house.
For example - I know Thayze Selemchant was the Meisarch, but in his passage, he's listed as dead in 1362, and there's no mention of his successor. I've read about Amn in every published 4e Forgotten Realms book, but that hasn't been helpful either.
Can anyone can direct me toward something concrete, or is this a 'fixer-up oppurtunity', where I can put original characters in the roles without breaking FR Lore?
Nothing concrete that i know of. They've intentionally left the 4e Realms a little vague so DMs can do what they what without conflicting any source material. I like the Idea but still it was kinda handy to look up something and youd have a rundown of the population,major characters, popular inns and the like. So yeah I'd say do what you want.
You could snoop around the LFR scene for Amn. See if they have anything concrete you can get your hands on.

I admit, I don't know too much about LFR. I've heard some good things about it, and the RPGA... but how "canonistic" is it? Is the stuff that happens in LFR from the minds of RPGA DMs, or from the same folks who designed the world?
I'm not sure if it should, but for some reason, it matters to me. While the ideas and inspiration could help, I still don't wanna use another DMs characters unless they appear in a rulebook somewhere and get "canonized" as part of the setting.

Yes that makes sense. I belive the LFR adventures are considered canon, not sure if they have adventures set in Amn or not. Still I think youre pretty safe just setting it up how ever you want.

To my knowledge, anything that appears in a module as written is canonical. As for who creates it, I believe that falls with the latter group. The former merely interpret their creations and adjust things, but what they do in their groups doesn't become canonical unless the guys in charge take a liking to it. And your stance does make sense. I have similar feelings, myself.
The Amn page on the FR wiki is fairly recent, but includes noble houses instead of the names for the five members of the ruling council. The FRCG and FRPG are all that will likely be published for post-spellplague sourcebooks, outside of sidebar content and Dragon/Dungeon.

Any big-name NPCs must be approved before they can be used. While the adventures are canon, they are from the minds of the authors and ok'd rather than being some insight into what designers/novelists think.

Anyway, I've designed the core leaders of the houses from scratch. Decided to give the Meisarch title back to House Selemchant and designed Sekrathus Selemchant, great-grandson of Thayze, to take on that role.
He's sorta what you'd get if you combined Lucius Malfoy with a used car salesman. I think he'll come off well.
