| #1drizztsmanchildJan 21, 2009 4:36:54 | Ok. Here we go. 1. Why was Cyric imprisioned for just following his office by bringing murder among even the gods?(No imprisonment for killing Leira) 2. Why didn't he absorb Mystra(midnights) essence when he killed her. (This Mystra is a brand new entity created by Ao because he couldn't bring the other one back. Hence Shar and Selunes essence that was in That Mystra should have been returned to them then) 3. It is Shar that is becoming to powerful and will be dealt with when Cyric is released. 900 yrs is a mere blink of an eye to a god. 4.Come on I dare you to name a cooler god of the realm. Mystra: Oh my precious humans can't let anything bad happen to them Lloth: Whaaaa I want all the drow Shar : I know I'll just sit back and let others do the work and I'll take credit because I'm too scared to do it myself Kelemvor: There's no joy in muddville blah blah blah Ohgma: My knowledge is to precious BOOORING Helm: I'm the gaurd of guarding but I'm not going to guard the blow that kills me. Tyr: My best friend calls my girl a *(#$ so I kill him. And the list goes on. The only god that is actually almost as cool as Cyric is Asmodeus for killing and eating Azuth with some Fava beans and a nice Cianti So to the rest of the pantheon I say BEWARE again. ![]() ![]() |
| #2sfdragonJan 21, 2009 4:44:48 | Ok. Here we go. 1:because Tyr , was the Judge, Jury and Executioner at the Trial of Cyric and like Cyric did as his portfolio dictated, Cyric murdered, Tyr brought justice to Cyric and jailed him. 2: ahhh but Midnight took what was left of Mystra, so you see when Cyric offed Midnight/Mystra, that would of been it, just Midnight, the essence of Mystra went back to Shar and selune, what was once theirs is now again. 4: more propaganda and lies. 5: anyone want a copy of Shar's Secret Pillow book. it contains unimaginable scenes of horror |
| #3JudgeDookieJan 21, 2009 5:38:04 | When you create a Spellplague, then punishment is that much harsher. All there is to it. Had I been presiding, I would have smashed his lil' pinky toe with my gavel then banished his a$$ altogether. Damn Spellplague. ![]() |
| #4drizztsmanchildJan 21, 2009 5:40:13 | Ok I remember Ao wanting to take Mystras magic from Midnight but changed his mind. Since when is a god's miight/magic their essence? Who Mystra was may have been created by Shar and Selune not her power. Midnight/Mystra had her own essence created when she was born and it was enhanced to divine essence through Ao. So I still believe that Midnight became a entirely new god of magic.(unless the weave was created by Shar and Selune?) |
| #5keverasJan 21, 2009 8:08:57 | Who is Cyric? |
| #6MattDrozJan 21, 2009 8:12:01 | Ok I remember Ao wanting to take Mystras magic from Midnight but changed his mind. Since when is a god's miight/magic their essence? So I still believe that Midnight became a entirely new god of magic.(unless the weave was created by Shar and Selune?) Mystryl was created by Shar/Selûne. Karsus killed Mystryl and Mystra was born from the ashes. If you read Ed's Shadows of the Avatar trilogy, you find that Mystra saw her death coming from the Time of Troubles and sent a portion of her divine essence into Midnight to prepare. So when Midnight ascended, she was still partially Mystra, not an entirely new god. |
| #7drizztsmanchildJan 21, 2009 8:16:21 | Who is Cyric? Joke all you want. When Avner(former seraph of Mask)breaks Cyric out we will see who's laughing.(Don't underestimate Avner He broke Mystra out under Helms watch) |
| #8drizztsmanchildJan 21, 2009 8:20:36 | Mystryl was created by Shar/Selûne. Karsus killed Mystryl and Mystra was born from the ashes. It doesn't matter give that portion back to Shar and Selune and the rest to Cyric. |

Now you make me to ask two questions this time. 1) Who is Cyric? 2) And who the hell is this Avner? |
| #10drizztsmanchildJan 21, 2009 8:26:41 | When you create a Spellplague, then punishment is that much harsher. All there is to it. IfShar should be banished. |
| #11drizztsmanchildJan 21, 2009 8:34:54 | I just wanted to know who Cyric is, and not what's the other guy supposed to do. Now you make me to ask two questions this time. Lol. Sorry thought you were joking. Ok Cyric is a greater evil deity. God of Lies,Strife,Murder,Assassins,Deceit,Insanity. He was imprisoned for a 1000 years for the murder of Mystra. 2. Avner was a shade in the novel"Crucible Trial of Cyric the mad. He was in Kelemvors city of death and Mask claims he worshipped him in life well to make a long story short Avner was given a task to save him from punishment and the task was to free Mystra from Helms prison. |
| #12keverasJan 21, 2009 9:17:21 | Good to know *chuckle* |
| #13lord_karsusJan 21, 2009 9:58:44 | 1. Why was Cyric imprisioned for just following his office by bringing murder among even the gods?(No imprisonment for killing Leira) -A good point. We don't know the answer. Because the "plot needed it", most likely. When the "plot needs something", rules get thrown out. Evidence of that is all around. 2. Why didn't he absorb Mystra(midnights) essence when he killed her. (This Mystra is a brand new entity created by Ao because he couldn't bring the other one back. Hence Shar and Selunes essence that was in That Mystra should have been returned to them then) -See above. Technically, sure, Cyric should have absorbed her portfolio and such, or she should have been reborn. Perhaps Cyric intentionally didn't absorb it, though, because he didn't want to become "tainted" by allowing some essence of Mystra/Midnight in him. 3. It is Shar that is becoming to powerful and will be dealt with when Cyric is released. 900 yrs is a mere blink of an eye to a god. -Yes, Shar has certainly had the wheels turning in her evil plot for the past bunch of years now. 4.Come on I dare you to name a cooler god of the realm. -Karsus. Or Blibdoolpoolp! |
| #14MattDrozJan 21, 2009 11:01:12 | -Karsus. Or Blibdoolpoolp! Personally, I think Ghaunadaur is pretty damn kickass, especially after the entry for the Year of the Lost Keep in GHotR: Lolth plots against her rivals in the drow pantheon. The Spider Queen attempts to destroy Ghaunadaur, but Ghaunadaur proves to be a stronger and more ancient power than Lolth suspected. The slime god abandons the Demonweb Pits for the Deep Caverns. Anything that Lolth seriously underestimates is pretty sweet! ![]() |
| #15aardwolfJan 21, 2009 12:16:13 | Cyric is cool....But TEMPUS is the best :D |
| #16MirtekJan 21, 2009 12:26:11 | I still like the theory that Cyric was becoming immensely powerfull after promoting his portolios so incredibly by causing the feud betwenn Helm and Tyr and then even personally slaying Mystra that the other deities acted out of shear panic over what Cyric would do next once he had the time to diggest his new powers. So they didn't imprisson him from a position of strength but by taking advantage of their millenias of exprience with how the planar fabric works and imprissoned him through a trick the younger deity simply didn't know about. Now they huddle in shear terror of the day when Cyric figures out how to undo his imprissionment or even worse happens and Cyric simply adjusts to all this new power that recently flowed into him and simply tears the planar fabric apart like a tissue of paper and breaks free through pure power |

| #24IluvrienJan 21, 2009 17:28:54 | If Cyric was Shar's catspaw, willing or otherwise, and it has been stated that Shar stopped the ascendence of a new deity of Magic... then is it not conceivable that Shar wanted Mystra's divine essence to return to herself and not to the mug she used to do the dirty work? That would go some way to explain her empowerment and the lack of his own, wouldn't it? |
| #25ody_seraph_of_cyric_dupJan 21, 2009 17:34:37 | Dont forget Show she also ate Mask. |

| #28JudgeDookieJan 22, 2009 0:38:50 | Alright, Shar is the power over the Shadow Weave. But as her followers return (Netheril) and begin to expand, such power is already not enough. You need the Weave. What do you have to do to get it? Be deceptive enough to get in and backside Mystra. So who owns the portfolio that holds deception? Cyric. And, as he hates Mystra, he's willing to bite on any secret Shar will offer him that will be the weapon to Mystra's demise. He agrees to her terms--whatever they are. All he needs is vengeance He slays Mystra, her power is unleashed. But Shar, not remotely expecting such a backlash, can't hold onto the Weave or the Shadow Weave as they recombine--and she loses it. That works for me with a little plaster. |

You need the Weave. What do you have to do to get it? Be deceptive enough to get in and backside Mystra. Ok. I'll go with that. But at the very least Shar should be imprisoned as well for being an accessory. I really hope Avner can free Cyric out of Revenge for Shar absorbing his former master. Time in prison=1000 yrs Time building up anger at betrayal=1000yrs Time conserving power=1000yrs Revenge against Shar=Timeless Shar really doesn't know how Evil Cyric can be but she will learn and Tyr is lucky he has already perished.(Though Cyric is so crafty and ingenius that he will probably find a way to bring him back so he can beat him down himself) |

Bring back Mystra and the next time you need a world-altering event kill off Cyric! A Chaosplague gets the job done as well. And in any event: Kill off Cyric anyway... Lirdolin |

| #55lirdolinJan 25, 2009 0:43:38 | Yeah, let's set him 'free' Within the domain of the 'Supreme Throne' the god Cyric the Black Sun is laughing and shriking maniacally at the shadows his insane mind creates. Suddenly one of these shadowy spectres does step closer and Cyric does stop his ranting unsure if this is just imagined as he realizes who is standing before him. "Have you come to free me?" "Yes Lord Cyric I've come to release you from your prison." Cyric laughs manically: "Then the hour of revenge has come at last! Now those pathetic fools will pay for letting me rot here for doing what is my nature...my divine right!" "I'm glad you understand Lord Cyric. That our kind must act according to our divine missions given to us by Lord Ao." The stranger steps closer, beginning to speak with a growl that builds into shouting: "Transgressor...Betrayer...Defiler.. . I'm Assuran the God of Revenge and I shall punish you!!!" Cyric's eyes widen in horror, as sudden clarity washes over him. The God of Revenge, known today as Hoar to his followers, plundges his blade into the mad god's heart: "This is for Mystra!" -stabs him again- "This is for Unther!" - and again...and again...and again... As Assuran is leaving the Supreme Throne, the domain begins to crumbel to dust and Cyric, true to his portfolio, in death commits one last murder, as all his clerics, chosen and exarchs die, their skulls burning with black flames. Assuran/Hoar, coated with blood and burning with the divine energy of a greater god, turns one last time seeing the Supreme Throne dissolve into the Astral Sea. "And now for Shar..." |
| #56drizztsmanchildJan 25, 2009 1:32:18 | What imaginitve creatures you all are. But I think your imaginations are just a cover up for the fear that dwells in the bottom of your minds and hearts and souls. Born in mortal form, this deity has whined his way to stardom, weaselled his way to might, and now is worshipped by more of the very weasels he was once like. If we release Cyric, we will have a land of whiners, inspired by the sleaziest of out of practices, including thousands of pages of forbidden Mystra/Cyric porn written by his priests! Really, this deity makes no sense, and they desperately need to get rid of him. |
| #66drizztsmanchildJan 30, 2009 11:13:13 | Another heretic added to the list. To be serious here for a sec. Tyr was the God of Justice right? Well who's the god of Justice now? Cyric has the right to be re-tried based on the subsequent actions of Tyr "murdering" (yes i said murdering) Helm in an "accidental" duel. Since the facts of Mystra's murder are not fully known it is quite possible that Cyric challenged Mystra to a duel and in said process of the duel Shar(unbeknownst to Cyric) distracted Mystra thereby causing Cyric to deliver an "accidental" killing blow which had Mystra not been distracted by Shar couldve easily repelled. The motion for a re-trial is put forward do i hear a second? The above statement is a THEORY of what MIGHT have happened. And until full disclosure by an author or WotC as to what really happened can be considered quite plausible. Let Cyric be Free. Cyric did not whine his way to power. He plotted killed and betrayed his way to Godhood. |
| #67StiggerJan 30, 2009 19:16:34 | No, he got manipulated by Mask as a stalking horse... his own skill had nothing to do with it. He was, and is, a tool... take that how you will. :P |
| #68rauricJan 30, 2009 22:59:52 | Cyric, the Loser God. Actually the people who wrote him could have done better. He can be a cool diety if the correct writer or DM handles him so. He did kill a god of murder on his own though. Yes he was manipulated but he did not know the sword was an Avatar. He had thw stones to take on an Avatar of the god of MURDER. That is pretty cool. |

| #79RamienFeb 03, 2009 2:12:47 | No lesser Deity can defeat Cyric(Lord of so many Spheres) much less a being who is not fully a god! Finder took out Moander back when he was just a mortal. Now that his power's been stepped up to Exarch, if nothing else, I'm sure he could take on Cyric, particularly if he's managed to keep a hold of Tymora's good graces. Even if he couldn't, though, I'm pretty sure Bane would have something to say about a loose cannon like Cyric running around free. And considering Bane's the one deity powerful enough to hack his way into the core pantheon, I'm sure he can smack around the upstart Cyric with little trouble. Of course, what's really going to happen is the primordials from Abeir are finally going to awaken, there's going to be a whole new Godswar, and the smoking remains of the Realms are going to become Fifth edition - and it'll all be Cyric's fault. Then he'll be crucified by all the the people who hate edition changes. ;) |
| #80drizztsmanchildFeb 03, 2009 3:05:31 | Rubbish and Nonsense I say. Any god who has the strength to claim Pandemonium(Synonym for Chaos) as his own home plane will not be detered by something as fickle as luck and some upstart Exarch. As for Bane he will be to busy trying not to be consumed by Asmodeus who has suddenly developed a taste for godflesh. As to the primordials you could have a point there so here you go ![]() ;) |

Those Cyricist archdemons/angels would likely be key to his dealings with his mortal worshippers. Some might be vying for exarch status. | #103mourn_dupFeb 11, 2009 16:29:40 | 1. Why was Cyric imprisioned for just following his office by bringing murder among even the gods?(No imprisonment for killing Leira) Because he didn't just kill another deity, he caused the cosmos to become unstable. Remember, the Weave is what held the planes in their proper places, and when Mystra died, the planes went haywire, causing the deaths of several other deities as a result, the ascension of the strongest archdevil to divinity, and a cataclysm to rival the Abeir-Toril separation. 2. Why didn't he absorb Mystra(midnights) essence when he killed her. (This Mystra is a brand new entity created by Ao because he couldn't bring the other one back. Hence Shar and Selunes essence that was in That Mystra should have been returned to them then) Because he couldn't? Not all deaths of a deity result in the victor being able to just grab their power. When Helm killed Mystra, he didn't get it. Also, the battle between Shar and Selune created Mystryl, but it wasn't a deliberate act on their part. That essence ceased to be theirs when it become Mystryl's. If the death of Mystryl would have given Shar or Selune back their lost essence, it would have occurred during Karsus' folly. 4.Come on I dare you to name a cooler god of the realm. I agree. I like Cyric above the other Realms' gods. Helm: I'm the gaurd of guarding but I'm not going to guard the blow that kills me. More like: I'm the god of guardians, but I can't defeat a deity that is way more powerful than me and also my boss. Tyr: My best friend calls my girl a *(#$ so I kill him. More like: It has come to my attention that the friend I sent to court my future wife has been pressing his own suit instead, so as the god of justice I will demand satisfaction for this betrayal. |
| #104drizztsmanchildFeb 11, 2009 19:23:30 | I recall reading one of LK's posts that it wasn't just the fact that Cyric killing Mystra that caused the weave to disband but that "something/someone" prevented a new Mystra from t ascending and someone called "Traitor" escaped from their prison that caused the spellplague. | #121authorien_dupFeb 13, 2009 16:22:52 | I too read the Time of Troubles Trilogy. I too think the trilogy is awful, but the Realms lore goes that Cyric killed 3 deities and therefore should be an extremely powerful god. I also read The Crucible, The Trial of Cyric the Mad. That book was also horrible. At the end of the book, Malik, Cyric's Chosen, read to Cyric "The True Life of Cyric" an artifact created to counteract the Cyrinishad. Cyric had become insane because he read his own artifact and it worked on him. So, Cyric came to believe his own plot to make everyone believe that he was the supreme being. So, when "The True Life" was read to Cyric, he was sane.... Now, how WotC concludes that Cyric is once again insane after The Crucible, I'm not entirely sure. Granted, WotC could use the lame logic that Cyric was always nutty. Despite this, to claim that Cyric is insane, at least in Western legal circles, to some extent lessens his culpability and monstrosity. IMHO, Cyric should be as sane as can be. This makes him a far more credible and fearsome god. Why? In part because Cyric would then make a LOGICAL CHOICE to promote murder (perhaps like the Indian mythos' Kali, he murders to clear room for the incoming young, this would make his monstrous, but also a necessary force of [human?] nature). People who murder on purpose should be feared (Hitler, Stalin, Che Guevara, terrorists, the Unabomber, Timothy McVeigh, BTK, etc.). This is the problem with what WotC's done. They've made Cyric (and murder) a laughing stock. Just look at some of the responses on this thread. Rather, to strike fear in the hearts of players, Cyric should be sane and promote murder to the nth degree. I can see how many gods might fear Cyric because he caused a multiverse spanning event and therefore might want to imprison him or punish him for causing that event. I don't think he was tried for the murder of Midnight/Mystra (I may be REALLY wrong on this point) because when he was tried in The Crucible, he was found guilty of promoting his own portfolio, murder, and set free. If he's the god of murder, and he commits the ultimate murder, deicide, by killing Mystra, how is he not advancing his portfolio? Also, to me, it was really weak for WotC to claim that killing ONE goddess that is limited to ONE realm caused a shift in the entire multiverse. Seems to me they needed an excuse to screw up the planes and alignments, so they grasped at a straw. Currently, I'm writing an adventure that takes PCs from levels 1-30 on their own quest to free Cyric to provide a counter-balance to Bane (even Paladins of Bahamut would want to halt or reverse the inexorable march of Bane's increasing and expanding tyranny when he's only really half-heartedly opposed by Shar who is consumed with hatred of Selune and the noobie Azmodeus who has his fingers in too many plots to keep close tabs on Faerun). It saddens me that WotC would never publish such an adventure or that it would never be included in LFR, but IMHO, it's their loss. In the end, WotC could do so much more with Cyric and they're really failing with him. I guess I need to bone up on my Spellplague years history because I've only recently found out that Tyr left the Realms altogether (granted, he wasn't listed in the FRCS) and I've gotten conflicting reports that Mask either left the Realms or was destroyed. Looking forward to LOGICAL debate on the issue, not just more "Hail and Free Cyric!" and "Cyric is a loser!" chatter. |
| #122drizztsmanchildFeb 13, 2009 21:16:29 | Ah. I see your points and agree with all but one. If you read the ToT trilogy you'l see that Cyric only killed one god. (Bhaal maybe 2 with Leira). Torm and Bane destroyed each other in the battle of waterdeep. And I believe Midnight killed Myrkul(with a little help from Cyric) on Blackstaff tower. |
| #123drizztsmanchildFeb 14, 2009 2:12:18 | And Cyric did claim himself to be the god of insanity so it behooves him to allow one of the thousand voices in his head to be insane right? As to his murder trial and conviction since Tyr himself commited a crime without justification(Helms death) and even though it was an accident that act should at least could have been a legal reason for Cyric to have a re-trial as well as any deity who has been judged by Tyr. And according to LK(whom I for one consider a excellent canon source of info unless he starts with IMO or I think) the cause of the apellplague was caused by 2 things combined with the Murder of Mystra 1. Something/someone prevented the accension of a new Mystra(god or godess of magic) 2. The "traitor" was released from his prison. Now while it is unknown if Cyric played a part in the 2 incidences above it still doesn't negate the fact that he deserves a re-trial with whoever has taken Tyr's place. Also Cyric still has control over quite a few spheres which should make him a powerful Greater Deity(as of 3.5e he was the god of murder, strife and discord, insanity,Deception, and intrigue) |
| #124authorien_dupFeb 18, 2009 21:28:23 | If Cyric made some kind of pronouncement that he was the god of the insane, it's not, that I can find, reflected in either his portfolio or his domains in any of the 3.5 or 4e literature. In Faiths and Avatars, a TSR AD&D product, his portflio is listed as Murder, strife, lies, intrigue, deception and illusion. No mention of insanity in his portfolio. That work shows that while Cyric didn't personally kill all three of Bhaal, Bane, and Myrkul, he was the benefactor of their destructions during the Time of Troubles. According to that same work, it wasn't until he created the Cyrinishad and read it himself that he lost the portfolio of the Dead to Kelemovr and Tyranny to Xvim. So, at one point, Cyric had the power of ALL of the "Dark Gods". THAT was the crux of my statements: at one point in time, Cyric had the powers of two Greater gods and an Intermediate at his command. That should have made him a power to be reckoned with. In the 3rd ed Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting (FRCS), Cyric's portfolio is murder, lies, intrigue, deception, & illusion. His clerical domains are Chaos, Destruction, Evil, Illusion, and Trickery. Still, no mention of Insanity or Madness as either a clerical domain or a portfolio. Once Bane consumed Iyachtu, Bane took strife from Cyric according to the FRCS. In the 3rd ed Faiths and Pantheons, Bane still has strife. Cyric's listed portfolio is unchanged: murder, lies, intrigue, deception, & illusion. His clerical domains are also unchanged. Come 4th edition, the Forgotten Realms Campaign Guide states Cyric's sphere is Strife (p. 80)...apparently he reclaimed that from Bane somehow. An explanation would be nice, WotC. There are no clerical domains in 4e. Cyric is billed as the "god of strife and lies" on p. 74. Not only is he described as insane, but his followers are described as lunatics and speading insanity. Again, WotC has no STATED basis for this since Cyric was cured of his insanity by Malik in The Crucible. Again, WotC, explain yourself! Now, I would argue that simply because he's described as insane, that doesn't mean he's the god of isanity. Yes, insane individuals might worship him, but that doesn't mean that he's the patron diety of the insane nor does it mean that he seeks to protect the insane or anything of the like. For instance, the patron god of houseplants or cheese could be as nutty as a squirrel, but it doesn't mean the insane are in his portfolio. One final point in wrapping up. The 3rd ed Faiths and Pantheons states, "Cyric now views Bane as the greatest threat to his power, and the brewing war between these two lords of evil may eventually consume Faerun in a great holocaust." This statement taken in conjunction with the portfolios of the two gods Tyranny and Strife makes me think that Bane is the god of those who want to take power and impose order while Cyric struggles against tyranny. This HIGHLY reminds me of the struggle between Emperor Palpatine's evil Galactic Empire and the Rebels. Without Cyric to act as a foil to Bane, Bane should constantly strive to bring more and more governments under his sway. This reminds me of the Bloodwar, where lawful evil devils fought chaotic evil demons. While the two forces oppose one another, the upper planes were pretty much safe, but when evil is united under one flag, as Bane would do, and Tharizdun did in Gygax's Gord the Rogue series, evil will war on everything else until everthing falls under their control. WotC is missing out on EPIC strugle here by baselessly declaring Cyric insane and imprisoning him. Cyric needs to be free to oppose Bane and needs to be sane and logical to counteract Bane's lust for power and his orderly attempts to obtain it. ADHERE TO YOUR OWN CANON, WOTC! Get rid of the farce about Cyric's supposed insanity OR have Bane attempt to take over Faerun virtually unopposed. |
| #125StiggerFeb 19, 2009 3:36:14 | I'd rather just have them get rid of both and make Corellon and his gold elf minions the primary evil in the Realms, as they have been for so very long without anyone realizing it... |

| #128MirtekFeb 21, 2009 8:14:36 | Once Bane consumed Iyachtu, Bane took strife from Cyric according to the FRCS. No, he didn't. It was an error in the FRCS which also partly made it into F&P. The confusion over the portfolio of Stife between Bane and Cyric started with the 3e FRCS which did falsely list strife among Bane's portfolios and not among Cyrics. While this error was corrected with the FRCS Errata (page 3) the error made it partly into Faiths&Pantheons (which contains the error at pages 14 and 20 but also got it right at page 223). About the issue with F&P the following has been posted by Sean K. Reynolds at the WotC message boards at May 11, 2002 10:55 AM: I think I figured it out. Here's the sequence. The designer for Bane must have used the pre-errata version (understandable, as the errata didn't come out until after this book was designed). [...] So no, Bane does not have strife as part of his portfolio, Cyric does. |

| #133lord_karsusFeb 22, 2009 9:07:00 | I really don't see Cyric being made to serve out his full sentence. I sense a novel coming about this and his release coming. -Probably. -In game terms, every 1 1/2 to 2 years is supposed to be a year in Faerûn. Even with them jumping forward 104 years every so often, that, basically, would mean they never get to 1,000 years from now, when he'd get off. Maybe with "good behavior", he'd get off earlier, but still... |

| #135baneofelvesFeb 22, 2009 19:16:04 | I realize that Cyric is totally nutso, but would he really go that far, JD? I mean, c'mon? I also think that it's likely that WOTC will come up with some half baked plot that makes no sense that will involve Cyric escaping from his prison. |
| #136JudgeDookieFeb 22, 2009 19:55:56 | Can that plot be more half-baked than the slaughter of innocent poultry? I think not. ![]() |
| #137baneofelvesFeb 22, 2009 19:58:33 | I dunno, after what WoTC did with the story of Mystra getting killed by Cyric, I'm sure that they could come up with something far worse than your idea. |
| #138lord_karsusFeb 22, 2009 22:23:12 | I also think that it's likely that WOTC will come up with some half baked plot that makes no sense that will involve Cyric escaping from his prison. -Nah, that'd never happen... ![]() |

| #145sfdragonFeb 24, 2009 4:24:05 | I realized it long long ago.... Pretty much the moment I started reading about the Vyshaan. So did I, but I figured that after reading their description. arrogant and proud... never a good combo. better to be a moon or a star elf and suffer from wanderlust. |
| #146Silverblade_The_EnchanterFeb 24, 2009 7:16:38 | Please, Cyric is about as Stupid Evil as you can get... were it not for the plot armor, he'd have been doomed long ago. :P lol true, true! Cyric has to tbe the dumbest shmuck of a god, well, the whole damned "avatar" rubbish from the Time of Troubles was dumb. yes, three completely blah mediocrities somehow manage take over the portofilos of gods, and Cyric was the worst by far. Puh-lease! He just sucks, how the hell could that wanna-be tosspot wipe out gods and get so far, eh? Bane, Bhaal and Myrkul made sense and worked for me. Then again, I guess I'm a double grognard, as I think the Realms was best before the Time of Troubles, never mind now ;) Old rule of thumb: if it ain't broke, don't fix it! |

| #154suin_bahhar_02May 18, 2009 5:33:30 | Hmm, I sense Cyric's followers shall make it so their Lord is free again within the first 100 years. A trickster like cyric could get a lot of support from the right minds in society, those who know all current rulers are a farce that should be removed with strife and violence. FREE LORD CYRIC :D |
| #155sfdragonMay 18, 2009 13:53:19 | So AO goes up to lord cyric the dumb's prison and says the only way you get out sooner is you give up half of your protfolios. you may keep murder and lies... |
| #156suin_bahhar_02May 18, 2009 14:41:41 | With those two portfolios Cyric could easily aquire some new ones after his release. I think he might have learned from doing time, so he might be patient and have some fun with those two portfolios for a few years before he takes the strife or illusion part back. |
| #157sfdragonMay 18, 2009 16:13:44 | lord AO awards strife to Lord Bane. Lord AO awards Illusion to Oghma |
| #158StiggerMay 18, 2009 16:41:21 | Garl makes far more sense than Oghma... Strife should go to Shar... Cyric should go to the Astral for a nice bit of retirement in a graveyard... |
| #159lord_karsusMay 18, 2009 16:53:06 | -Illusion would be a nice fit for Shar, bending it to suit her nihilistic tendencies: "Life, love, happiness, etc. are all illusions..." |

| #162sfdragonMay 19, 2009 3:22:17 | Bane had Strife first. yeah Garl would be better with illusion but you should get Intrigue or what ever the one Cyric pillaged from Mask. |
| #163drizztsmanchildMay 19, 2009 14:35:53 | Aren't at least 2 of the gods that imprisoned him dead(IMO the two main ones Helm(god of Gaurding!) and Tyr(God of his judgement!) )? The only thing that's keeping Cyric locked up is Cyric. He's taking a breather because with the death of Mystra he's has caused enough Strife and Intrigue on Faerun to last a few centuries don't ya think? He's in no danger of losing any of his portfolio's because as far as Ao's concerned Cyric has always lived up to his portfolio requirements (only a few gods have to the extent that Cyric has). So when and only when Cyric wants to join the fray then he will.![]() |
| #164suin_bahhar_02May 19, 2009 15:52:03 | Agreed. He'll go bored soon enough though, unless his scheming followers are amusing him. He'll eventually crave for sending endless vengefull, disguised avatars to the realms for some good old murderous mayhem. His targets would be Sune and Lathander/Aumantor this time. Untill that time Cyric's divine mind might be trying to comprehends Ao's motives. |

| #169MirtekMay 23, 2009 13:51:53 | lord AO awards strife to Lord Bane. I don't think that Bane would want it if he had anything to say about this. He now has this nice united church and having to create annother schism like back in the days of the banite church vs. the orthodox banite church is certainly the last thing he would want. Cyric's sects on the other hand thrive on this premise. |
| #170thorn-wychkinMay 23, 2009 14:03:17 | actually i think cyric is imprisoned because he's stark raving mad after reading the Cyrinshad or whatever that book he wrote he is called |

The only thing that's keeping Cyric locked up is Cyric.... Not quite. Either Ao is involved on his imprisonment or the rest of the "pantheon" is. I would consider it much like when they put him on trial after the Cyrinishad debacle.

Well, you pestered me by helping this one stay alive, so consider it a favor returned. ;) I don't think that Bane would want it if he had anything to say about this. But wasn't. Make sense now? ![]() There are conflicting stories on if he was actually healed or just faking/temporarily fixed. As of 4e, he is a mad god. |
| #179sfdragonMay 24, 2009 1:56:42 | It is all part of LOSS. Yes I am bitter about it, but thats my Shar. :P no; thats bob from accounting cant say what shar's going to do to him over such a flaw. (he forgot to put it on the contract) |
| #180drizztsmanchildMay 24, 2009 3:46:13 | That's something I don't agree with JD (the Ao factor) because Ao knew Cyric killed Leira and gave him a free pass saying it was him fulfilling his portfolio which included trying to snuff out other gods as well as bring murder to mortals. It had to have been strictly the gods who originally judged and condemned him keeping him in his prison. And in any Judgment cases Tyr had ultimate power to bind someone over for trial and enforce the sentence. So who now has that power and with magic being how it is now does that power exist still? |
| #181sfdragonMay 24, 2009 4:42:17 | Let the Light of Amunator shine bright in the darkness and show you the light of truth. It Torm God of justice, the threefold god, etc who wields justice now, as Justice Endures when your puny dark lies are brought to the light. Justice Endures, and to the Letter of the Law your Puny Cyric is bound to it, while his alleged conspirator laughs at him in the darkness. |
| #182drizztsmanchildMay 24, 2009 4:59:37 | Ah...I see thanks for the clarification Sfd. Funny thing about people who live their lives in darkness though. When the light of the real world is shone upon them they tend to be truely blind ![]() |

| #184drizztsmanchildMay 24, 2009 9:01:01 | Hey I wasn't the one to bring it back. It was Cyric letting people know that his time is coming and he will be responsible for 5e as well as 4e. BTW on a serious note what happened to the staff that was used to slay Mystra? |
| #185suin_bahhar_02May 24, 2009 9:14:21 | If anything Cyric should be given more momentum in future realms plots. His methods can be a nice instigation for story, giving a unique perspective of how a fledging god with copious amounts of power comes to terms with his divinity over time. He first is scorned and denied of his place amongst the intrigues of the fearunian pantheon, resulting in Cyric being forced the slaying and asurping of lesser gods. When he performes his own greatest deed by slaying "the Harlot" through deception and murder he gets ganged up apon by these decadent trio of so called allies to Mystra and grounded to his room. Seething with anger with the way Cyric is constantly treated as a child god he must come to terms with his clergy and actually learn the skills of mediating murder and deception through his followers. Thats his only power now, and its a thriving one at that thanks to his ambitious and unscrupulous clergy. |

Well, I’m not for or against, just sayin’. It’s Ao. He works in mysterious ways. ![]() And in any Judgment cases Tyr had ultimate power to bind someone over for trial and enforce the sentence. So who now has that power and with magic being how it is now does that power exist still? Seeing how all former pantheons and hierarchies therein have been tossed out, so have the rules. Besides, his sentence was instated before Tyr met the Great Bejebuz. Perhaps such a thing can’t be overturned. Funny thing about people who live their lives in darkness though. When the light of the real world is shone upon them they tend to be truely blind Very apt. | #194drizztsmanchildMay 31, 2009 4:56:18 | Ok, Before this thread is mercifully put to rest I have a thought and would like to hear input. On another thead I was answering a question about Cyric's plan at the end of The Trial of Cyric the mad and it made me think of something. At the end of the book the last sentence went like this(paraphrased of course) "The world was doomed, but it kept spinning anyway" which was a part of a coherent Cyric thinking about the future. And so my thought was this , do you think there's any validity that Cyric in a rare moment of sanity actually saw the Spellplague and set about his plans to make sure it came about?(The death of Mystra did change or" doom" the world as it was during the time between the end of his trial and her death) I know quite a few of posters think Cyric's a crackpot but I don't believe that this is a coincidence(thought I'm not sure when the trial ended Faerun time) with his schemeing in Pandemonium after his trial and his involvement in creating the spellplague. To me it's a very plausible outcome. I would like to hear other's thoughts on this(whether you like Cyric or not) on how plausible this could be. Thanks |
| #195niirfaMay 31, 2009 5:53:01 | I'm not sure about that theory (namely because the developers did not have a concept of the Spellplague back in 2e) but I like the idea that Cyric's more intelligent than he at first appears... sort of like Xykon from OotS. I have a little theory running in my head that Cyric actually played Shar, rather than the other way around, using the death of Mystra to wipe out a nice swathe of the pantheon, thereby increasing his power. Besides, 1000 years trapped in his home plane? Bah, that's a slap on the wrist for a god. He's really no worse for it. |
| #196lord_karsusMay 31, 2009 10:00:31 | I'm not sure about that theory (namely because the developers did not have a concept of the Spellplague back in 2e)... -Right. In retrospect, we can connect the two, and it all might work out, but the Spellplague certainly isn't what the author was alluding to. Being that the "apocalyptic future" is a very common fantasy/sci-fi theme, I would assume that it was something generic and theoretical that the author was possibly hinting at. |
| #197sfdragonMay 31, 2009 13:56:04 | a thin line always exists between genius and madness |
| #198suin_bahhar_02May 31, 2009 17:37:14 | How would the Realms look like if Cyric was in control? I think Cyric views a permanent Spellplague, with reversed foodcycles, utter divine mayhem and arcane chaos, that would cull the weak from man. Eventually those who serve Cyric in the afterlife will form his own fiendish army that can conquer all the planes, including the Far Realms. Perhaps Cyric is even debased enough to try to trick the creatures of the madness and he will try to temporary align himself with the Aboleths, Ilsensine or the Great Mother of the Beholder race. |
| #199lord_karsusMay 31, 2009 21:59:17 | How would the Realms look like if Cyric was in control? -A lot like it would if, say, Bane ruled things. Hitler, Franco, Mussolini, three different despots with three different ways of going about things, all ultimatley had fascist dictatorships. -Cyric is mad as a schizophrenic might be mad- he doesn't/didn't have a full grasp on his place in the world, thinking he was better than Ao, and all of that. He was never crazy as in he's as likely to bite you and start singing Sinatra as he was to shake your hand, and think you Aristotle. |
