Dark Moon Heresy

So, after YEARS of hating the Realms, I got the 4th ed Realms books and I love them. Well....maybe love is a bit strong of a word. I really, really like them.

But I have a question.

I have a warlock character and I think I want her to worship Selûne...and Shar. Basically have them as different aspects of the same Goddess. So I read there is something called the "Dark Moon Heresy" and it sounds perfect, it even makes my warlock a renegade against the established religions.

I did a search and saw there was some information in the Power of Faerûn book. But it is only a paragraph or so. Not much to work on.

Now while I could come up with something, I wanted to see if that work had already been done.

Anyone have anything?

If not, I'll see what I can knock together.

Thanks!

Sorry, it seems the bit in Power of Fearun is all there is officially.

Take what you get from Power of Faerun and run with it.

-This belongs in the Forgotten Realms: Realmslore section. It'll be moved.

Yeah I figured that all there was officially was what was in the PoF book, which isn’t much.
I was looking to see if there was anything fan-made yet.

Thanks,

Is an equally brief section on it.

Here: http://faerunrp.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=158

Is a few PC's made by someone, one of which is a Dark Moon heretic with some background information.

...is another thread in another forum... that is yours, I believe.

I can't seem to find anything else, I'm sure someone has had information on them in the past... maybe.

Thanks for the links!

I have seen those, but wanted to see if memories were better than my Google-fu.

That last link is mine. I come here for a very "cannon" or deep answer and to RPGNet for a broader one.

I also just posted this over there:

I have an idea forming I am just not sure if I want her to be a duality Goddess (Shar and Selûne) or Triple Goddess (Selûne-Shar-????).

A Duality works better, but my brain seems wired for Triple moon goddesses.

I also had this passing idea of another heresy that Shar and Selûne were not sisters but lovers and Chauntea and Mystryl are their children. But I do want to avoid any lesbians=evil cliches with Shar.

Chances are I'll end up doing something like this: The Church of Lolth Ascendant.

There is something that sounds similar to the "Dark Moon Heresy" although it is described as the "New Moon Heresy" in the novel Mistress of the Night. The story arc of the novel attempts to paint the interpretation of Selune and Shar as something other than enemies as misguided, but they leave enough doubt that the character in question who reaches that conclusion isn't completely wrong.

Technically, both Selune and Shar have different aspects, and are triurne goddesses themselves... If you wanted a real trio the most logical third would be Mystra (as born of the energies of the two), but that might be a bit difficult in 4E. Then again, She needn't be dead, and you don't need to worship a living deity ;)

Thanks for that link to the clergy of Aurushnee! Such a beautiful blasphemy

Your warlock has a star pact? And was he nurtured by the monasteries of the Darkmoon monks? Or did he break away from the shrines of the Silvermoon orders to Selune scattered across Fearun?

Thanks all!

I like the wazing/wanning idea, something I will certainly use.

I was also thinking of Seehaine (sp) as a third.
I know she is not really connected with the other two, but she is the moon goddess of the core book, so since this is a 4E game it might work nice.

If I go with a trinity I'll make her more neo-pagan moon goddess.
If I go with duality then more like an Jungian archetype: light and dark anima.

Now I am not sure about ANYTHING in the Realms yet, so I am not certain where my Warlock is from or anything like that. My thought was to have her be something like an astrologer for a royal court when she discovers this dark heresy.

Glad you liked the Lolth/Aurushnee stuff!
If I use Seehaine then I might have to figure out a way to make both these ideas work. Though these are gods, they can contradict what mortals think about what they "should" or "aught" to be.

Not to burst your bubble, but Sehanine was shown to be an aspect of Selune. You can still use it that way, I know in my FR game, she is still her own power.

Exactly, what a lot of people forget, sadly, is that the 'canon' we know, is really just word of mouth from a mortals perspective.

If you'd like help placing your PC, let us know the race, class and general background you have in mind.

If you want a third moon goddess, then there's always the older and more obscure variants on Selune, or other goddess that got linked with her. There's Lucha in the Durpar area, Bright Nydra of the Farsea Marshes, and Elah in the Anauroch.

This might not be relevant in 4e, but anyway.

Oh, not a god, but an Archfay (if you play a fey creature).

The Maiden of the Moon.

Man....I was doing so well till you brought up the Maiden of the Moon.

My Warlock is currently a Fey Pact, but we are being allowed to "reboot" our characters. I was thinking of a Star Pact, but less Lovecraftian.

If I go with a Triple Goddess deal then maybe I can do this.

The Maiden would be the Maiden of the Moon, also called by some Sehanine. She manifests as an Archfay, young, fickle, the eternal maiden and huntress, hates were-creatures but enjoys humanity in their imperfect ways. Symbol is the crescent moon.

The Mother would be Selûne. She gave birth to Chauntea and Mystryl. She is the protector of those who travel in the night and the patroness of good lycanthropes. She is the full moon. The light in the dark.

The Crone is Shar. She represents darkness and death and is the patroness of evil lycanthropes. She is the new or dark moon.

The heresy is that all three are in fact the same Goddess. As the moon waxes and wanes so does the dominant personally. When the moon is full as a mother about to give birth it is Selûne who is dominant, but as the moon wanes so does her power and Shar is in ascendance.
While all three Goddess are aware they share a deeper connection, only the Maiden knows the complete truth. It is this truth She speaks to Her clergy and warlocks.

Just some ideas of the top of my head.

Hey. You helped me out a lot!

Need to add some ideas from the posts over at RPGNet and I should have something soon.

NOW....need to figure out given all of this if my Warlock/Cleric is Fey or Star Pact.
