| #1cloud-zeroJun 12, 2008 16:50:50 | I am having a campaign with some of my friends and in it we must travel to the Anaouroch desert. from what i read about it, it is a Dead-magic zone. and i wonder if Divine magic works there, because Dead-magic zone is a tear in the Weave and it should not effect Divine spellcasters. So if someone could confirm my thoughts it would help me a lot in the preparations for the game. Thanks in advance :D Second Question is about the Time of Troubles, did Divine magic that didn't came from divine entities such as Druid's magic stopped working also? or just Cleric's spell stopped? Again Thanks to anyone who will reply. |
| #2AndrekanJun 12, 2008 17:17:42 | Dead of magic are these zones where Gods died so I would think these areas effected by the tear of the weave and the death of Gods would also include divine magic, any magic weapons, items, etc. The magic of Druids is channelled through nature gods and thus when Chauntea, the Eath Mother who had so much trouble with Bhaal on the Isles is cut off from her followers. Their powers are deminished. I had a Paladin who travelled to the Abyss or one of the planes of Hell during that time. The DM did not make it clear no extra powers at all but with the help of our wizard we were able to save Waukeen from her abductors. |
| #3lord_karsusJun 12, 2008 17:30:13 | -The Anauroch is not a massive Dead Magic Zone. There may be pockets of Dead Magic, but, on the whole, magic works perfectly fine there. |
| #4AndrekanJun 12, 2008 17:39:02 | And anyone by the name Karsus would know!!:D |
| #5maskedoneJun 12, 2008 18:36:59 | Most of the time, Divine Magic is channeled through the Weave therefore Dead Magic still blocks it. Psionics, and arcane/divine magic gained through the Shadow Weave bypass the issue. Initiate of Mystra or at high enough level a very small supply of other tricks can also help with the issue. |
| #6lord_karsusJun 12, 2008 18:38:05 | And anyone by the name Karsus would know!!:D -Not all of them, necessarily. Plenty of my clones are quite dumb. Clone degeneration, I guess... |

This is probably the event Cloud-Zero is referring to. Technically, it's not a completely dead magic zone, as the Netherese in the trio of adventures have only blocked the Weave. The Shadow weave works just fine for them. Karsus... this is the trio of adventures:
Cormyr: The Tearing of the Weave Shadowdale: The Scouring Of The Land Anauroch: The Empire of Shade
The major plot is that the Shadowvar have figured out a way to unravel the Weave over the Anauroch desert, which is why PC spellcasters dependent on the Weave have issues during the adventure trio. |
| #2118DELTAJun 28, 2008 10:34:57 | -Cause the modual says so? :P It's all part of the Mystra nerf fest, and how the Weave is actually a hindrance to spellcaster's everywhere so the Weave has to go and the Goddess behind the tyranny of it all. :embarrass ![]() 18DELTA ![]() |
| #22lord_karsusJun 28, 2008 11:04:01 | Karsus... this is the trio of adventures: -Yes, I know that much. I am wondering the specifics of what exactly they do to create the Dead Magic Zone. |
| #23woobyluvJun 28, 2008 11:09:58 | -Yes, I know that much. I am wondering the specifics of what exactly they do to create the Dead Magic Zone. The shadovar use artifacts to accomplish their deeds. One of which is a Nether Scroll. Another, a relic special to Shar, can't remember what it's called off the top of my head. |
| #24TheriseJun 28, 2008 11:41:53 | -Yes, I know that much. I am wondering the specifics of what exactly they do to create the Dead Magic Zone. Well, bearing in mind that I didn't run the adventures because I didn't like the overall tone, I may be missing some details, but here's the general scoop - There's a Sharran priestess named Esvele, who has discovered a "shadow shard" in the treasure hoard of Despayr (a black dragon warped by Shar, so it can breathe "shadowstuff", their word not mine). She learned that in addition to other powers it held a "key" to a ritual that tears holes in the Weave. Part one (Cormyr) is about stopping Despayr from creating a dead magic zone over the Vast Swamp. Not much is really said about the ritual there. Part two (Shadowdale) has a large insert about the "Ritual of Unwinding", a Sharran ritual intended to suppress the Weave in an ever-expanding region without actually destroying it (which would cause the Shadow Weave to collapse also). The final unfolding of this ritual creates a "dead magic zone" that functions as an antimagic field except that shadow magic (users, and items based on shadow weave) is unaffected. There's a good bit in there about how Chosen of Mystra take damage as the field expands, and how silver fire causes massive damage to those who use it (although if someone comes in -after- the ritual, silver fire can "heal" the area). This is important because Sylune is featured in the adventure. Anyway, it wasn't entirely clear to me if this is -exactly- the same ritual that the Shadowvar -later- use to create the dead magic zone over Anauroch, but it probably is. In part 3 (Anauroch) it simply states that the shadowvar have put a dead magic field over Anauroch before the adventure begins, although it's supposed to be after the events in part 1 and 2. The Netherese get excited by this, and decide they want to learn more, and in the process somehow stumble across a set of Nether Scrolls, which are polymorphed into the shape of a tree. Much of the adventure deals with keeping a prince of Shade from fully unlocking the nether scroll tree and using them to conquer everyone. Destroying the tree (sort of, by magically dispersing them into real scrolls that scatter across the Realms), with the help of an ancient artifact of Amaunator (a Chalice that can create "liquid sun" - which destroys shadow weave magic as a disjunction effect) and the brief assistance of the sarrukh Terraseer, stops those pesky Shadowvar Netherese. So... anyway... that's about it. In a nutshell. |
| #25lord_karsusJun 28, 2008 12:03:11 | So... anyway... that's about it. In a nutshell. -Thank you. |
| #26TheriseJun 28, 2008 12:55:10 | -Thank you. Surely. A few other things come to mind, with respect to the OP's question: The date of the final adventure (Anauroch) isn't exactly clear, but the antimagic zone over the Anauroch desert is definitely after the middle adventure (Shadowdale), which is set in the winter of 1375 "five months after the Last Mythal trilogy. Assuming the players use the Chalice of Amaunator effectively on the (nether scrolls) tree, the disjunction effect not only scatters the scrolls but also destroys the Sharn Wall, which could have interesting consequences for people traveling in the region because the phaerimms escape and disperse. When the scrolls are dispersed and the PCs "win", there's no indication at all whether or not the antimagic field (vs. Weave energy) over Anauroch also comes down. It probably doesn't, from my take on the final moments. In Part 2, the adventurers can stop and revert the antimagic zone that is developing around Shadowdale, but they do so by interfering with the final steps of the ritual. In the final adventure, the ritual over Anauroch seems to have been completed, and mainly the objective is to stop the Shadowvar from corrupting the nether scrolls into a hybrid weave/shadow magical item that they can then use to conquer everyone else. There's a really brief allusion to "the Weave starting to fray", which I read as a kind of permanent damage caused by the prolonged effect of the Rite of Unwinding that would perhaps eventually cause not only a Weave-dead area of effect but start the unraveling of magic in a true sense and destroy the Shadow Weave. This might just be my speculation, but I thought it was interesting how they phrased it differently. Finally, with respect to canon, this adventure set matches exactly what is stated in the AGHotR and there's even a designer's note in Part 2 (Shadowdale) that assumes certain outcomes based on this adventure set. The AGHotR last really speaks to this in 1374, when Sharran assassins attack Elminster's tower (which is key to Part 2). The AGHotR note in early 1375 about Zhentilar and Sharrans infiltrating Shadowdale, and Lord Mounrgrym turning over the Pendant of Ashaba to Azalar Falconhand along with the rulership of the dales, is also a clear part of this adventure set (the very end of Part 2, in this case). |

| #28TheriseJun 28, 2008 15:56:30 | -There's always an "official" outcome. Yep, it'll be interesting to see what (if?) they say anything about it in the FRCG. I'd think so, because the Netheril Empire is going to be such a big thing. |
| #29suin_bahhar_02Jun 28, 2008 16:27:42 | So the netherese have a possibility to actually gimp themselves by fraying the weave above the Aunaroch. Way the go Shadeprinces. ![]() |

That's just my speculation though, based on the wording in one part of the adventure. -That's true, to the point that I don't think it's a leap to say that not every single wizard on the Shade Enclave uses Shadow Weave Magic. -How would Divine Magic work? It utilizes the Weave, and I don't recall seeing any feats or anything that allow Divine Magic to use the Shadow Weave. The Shadow Weave feat doesn't, I don't think. |
| #32nymrohdJun 28, 2008 17:31:17 | The Shadow Weave feat affects magic. Not arcane or divine magic. The sharran prestige class gives the shadow weave feat for free for example. |
| #33TheriseJun 28, 2008 17:31:28 | -That's true, to the point that I don't think it's a leap to say that not every single wizard on the Shade Enclave uses Shadow Weave Magic. According to the adventure, the effects are similar to an Antimagic Field, but apparently just for "Weave-based magic". Nice and specific gimping, eh? ;) |
| #34lord_karsusJun 28, 2008 17:33:02 | According to the adventure, the effects are similar to an Antimagic Field, but apparently just for "Weave-based magic". -Right. Divine Magic utilizes the Weave, however. It's technically "Weave-based magic". |
| #35TheriseJun 28, 2008 17:50:12 | -Right. Divine Magic utilizes the Weave, however. It's technically "Weave-based magic". Fortunately, most of the enemy clerics that the PCs fight have a level or two in Shadow Adept. To take that prestige class, you have to have taken the feat shadow weave magic. I mean... fortunate for the Shadowvar. Sucks to be the PCs, though. By the variant Antimagic Field affecting just "Weave-based magic", I meant that it completely allows for Shadow Magic to work, no problems whatsoever. Oh, and the magic items that are used by the Shadowvar (which the PCs could utilize as treasure) are all shadow weave-based items. It just has, for me, the flavor of telling the PCs: "yeah, all your good stuff -and- your spells are totally gimped, but all your enemies are at full power... enjoy!" |
